Anyone read this? Lots of interesting stuff. Some factual errors, but a good read (but long).

THIS caught my eye:
"1981’s Escape (or ESC4P3 if you’re a nut job) was the monster album the record company and everyone involved with the band had been working toward since Perry joined the group."
...it's official....we're nutjobs!! LOL

It's a good piece and I agree with most of it - despite the barely concealed resentment toward Perry which runs through the article and his bizarro argument that "Generations" is the best album since "Escape". But still...it was an enjoyable read.

Thank you for this great read and you weren't kidding about it being long.
Did anyone else get the 404 error when attempting to download the 79' boot?

It's not a huge stretch. Almost all of us would agree Frontiers is better, but ROR, TBF and Arrival are often seem ranked right with Generations from the fans....

I thought the dude was way off base in his comments about the Frontiers album.

There's a lot of opinion in there as well.

I agree...and having crapped all over ROR for not being a 'classic Journey album' and picking out "Be Good To Yourself" for criticism....he then recommends listening to "Once You Love Somebody"...which is the most unJourneyish song on the album.

WHAT? I dont even want to read it then. That's a pile of crap bigger and stinkier than Dean's avatar any day. Generations? Ugh.

Um he loves Generations but doesn't mention A Better Life? Or did I miss that?

I would nominate "Positive Touch" for that unflattering award.

Oh Conversation I can't read your post without laughing now about TNC! I guess whenever he arrives I won't be able to type and read his comments.

DITTO!
That song, as well as most of ROR, was a big, steaming pile of

I think whoever wrote this was paid to write it that way. Enough said!

I have said, and so have others, ROR was just a Perry solo cd. Good to see that in print somewhere.
He liked Generations too, my second favorite Journey cd.
When was this written, no mention of JSS-ERIC

That song is utterly superb - as is ROR - one of the great, great albums of the 1980s. How anyone with even a modicum of appreciation for vocals can dismiss ROR is beyond me.

I know...it's the only song worth listening to on that album...although "The Place In Your Heart" wasn't half-bad.

ROR is Steve Perry's best solo cd, but as a Journey cd, it ain't there-ERIC

ROR has its moments, but Positive Touch is not one of them.

I
never agree with you, but do on this one... Positive Touch is yucky

Oh sure..."Positive Touch"is pure 80s cheese...but I love it anyway.
As for the Perry solo album argument...well, the songs were co-written by Schon and Cain...I can clearly hear Schon and Cain throughout the album...and Schon's guitar solos are brilliant throughout...and there are only three songs which sound like a Perry solo album to me...""Positive Touch", "Once You Love Somebody" and "It Could have Been You". All the others sound like mid-80s AOR at its very best...and are true to the Journey sound.
Yes, Perry was the dominant force - but who cares? The spectacular performance he delivers on this record should make any Journey fan PROUD that it is Journey's name on the cover of that album.
And at least Journey were trying something a bit different with each album in the 80s. They weren't afraid to experiment or surprise people....which have been entirely reluctant to do in recent years.
