Interesting Interview w/ Neal and the DL Duo

The latest issue of Guitar Edge has an article on Neal and the DL Duo. It was done while DL was in LA to do the VH1 Rock Honors and Neal was rehearsing for the tour (They were not in the same room but were asked the same questions).

Some topics of interest:
Neal said that he had been toying w/ the idea to tour w/ Lepp for about 4 years. he finally called Viv and they got this thing rolling.

Phil claims fans get 2 great bands although "DL is the more rocking of the 2..."
Neal, on the otherhand, said that "fans think of Journey and they think of songs like 'Open Arms". Until they've seen us LIVE, they have no idea how hard we've been rockin'!"

Neal talks about some of his fave "Schon" solos and, surprisingly, 90% of them came from his Santana days (I can't remember the songs). He also mentioned how much he loves doing the extended end solo in 'Who's Crying Now' cuz he can literally "hear the audience singing along to the melody." I think that is one of the things that makes Neal so amazing is that he constantly comes up with these simple, melodic solos that, not only fit the song perfectly but, stick in your mind like glue. I also didn't know that he did the guitar work on Mariah Carey's "Hero"; this was one of the hardest solos to nail, trying to find the right melody.

And finally, in searching for different tones, Neal likes to listen to different instruments like sax or voice to get a different feel for what sounds good. Wonder what kinda tones a voice like JSS has will inspire?

Anyway, saw it at a news-stand, thought some of this stuff was interesting so I thought I'd share :)

Extremely positive Journey article/interview entitled "The Man With The Wiggly Head" just out in...EgyptToday

"At press time, Journey’s Greatest Hits collection was the tenth best selling catelog album of all time according to Billboard.com, the online edition of the music-industry bible. For a group that hasn’t had a significant impact on radio or MTV in nearly two decades, that’s not simply impressive, it’s phenomenal.

How is it that Journey has endured a continual pop-music onslaught by the likes of Mariah Carey, Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera, yet still dwarfs most comers in terms of long-term fan adoration? According to group founder and guitarist Neal Schon, “It is as simple as having made ‘good songs that rock’ and not trying to make ‘good rock songs.’”

I think Neal was referring to his cover of Hero on his CD "Voice". He does a great job on it as well as the other standards he cover on there. Really like his cover of "Conte Partiro"(sp?) by Andrea Boccelli.

If you haven't heard it, check out Neal's Voice CD. It is really good.
