Rambling Thoughts

While watching that show "Duets" last night, I was amazed at how different the "non singers" were compared to the "singers".
Singers are born, not made. I know this, because even though I have a great ear for music (I can pick a flat note or a key change out of a song in a heartbeat) I myself can't sing that well at all. When a singer opens his/her mouth, music just flows out. Not strained or forced, but natural. Even Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Randy Travis have this gift. Like their voices or not, they have perfect, effortless pitch. Simply amazing.
A variation on the above theme... Hearing Augeri, Soto, and Castronovo sing Journey songs and sound "labored" shows Perry's perfection even more. I don't care about the age thing, and I know Perry lost it in his middle to late 30's. I am not talking about that. What I am talking about is the natural, effortless, comfort with which Steve Perry sang these songs.
To hear others try to sing them drives home the fact that these songs really WERE tailored around his voice.
Not sure where I am going with this, but just wanted to get it out there.

I know exactly what you mean. It was effortless for him, even taking it higher than
the recordings, he was one of a kind.....

You think he lost it in his 30's, how did it happen? was he ill or he just killed it from touring? I think he still sounds good, there is a song on itunes that he sang on pretty recently that sounded nice, but I wouldn't know what he really sounds like now.

I was just gonna talk about this and Perry's voice. I just listened to the Marysville boot (I was finaly able to download) and this was the second time I heard a live JSS, the first beingthe 3rd show in West Palm Beach. While NOBODY can sound like Perry in his prime, Augeri, JSS, or even The Man Himself.. Perry. JSS has made these Journey songs into something that I enjoy, the band seems to have a new set of BALLS for lack of a better word, everything sounds a bit harder and I enjoy that. JSS does seem to strain a bit in some parts or not hit the high notes as Perry did, but hey NOBODY can hit those notes. Perry in his prime was simply the best there was, the Babe Ruth of singers. Even Perry himself had trouble with some of those notes, just listen to Frontiers and Beyond the songs at the end are not as crisp and clean as the Escape Era. The Houston DVD was a awesome performence. Singers are something special and Perry was a special singer in a special band at a special time. His voice will never be duplictaed. I am happy that we have a Journey today that can bring a good Rock-n-Roll show to us. I enjoy what JSS brings to this band, I like the energy, the attitude, the younger life he has sparked into the boys, and his stage presenece. It is a breath of fresh air too see JSS perfroming the songs with the energy that they were ment to be performed with, the effort and the respect he gives these songs that were sung by one of his idols.

I hear a slight difference in his voice from Departure to Escape, and a drastic difference from Escape to Frontiers, then again to ROR and Trial By fire.
He can still hit perfect pitch, just lost his Tenor qualities. The man is still amazing, but heck - he toured his butt off and is pushing 60! No one could expect him to sing like he did in his 20's.
