Question For JSS

Postby Enigma869 » Fri Sep 01, 2006 4:02 am

Hey Jeff...

I was just wondering what inspired you to record Journey's "Send Her My Love" track? Does the song have special significance to you? Was Perry an influence to you at all, musically speaking? Also, after being on tour as a member of Journey, do you think Journey songs are a bit more difficult to sing than most? I always thought the notes Perry hit were unbelievably impossible for anyone to hit. It seems to me that they're extremely challenging songs, vocally, and perhaps the songs alone lead to lead vocalists having voice issues. Just wondering if you could shed any light on that. I do hope that if you become a permanent member of Journey, you guys will put out a new DVD. I've been someone who is guilty of believing your voice doesn't fit the classic Journey sound, but I'm not sure it's fair to judge your vocal ability based on internet bootlegs! That said, I have your recording of Send Her My Love and thought you did a superb job on that track!

One final thing...whatever happens with you and your music career...Don't ever change. It is so refreshing to see a talented musican not lose touch with their fans. You have no idea how appreciative fans are to hear from a band member...especially one who comes across as just a regular guy! I will tell you that I'm a lifelong Perry fan and always will be. That said, just because I find your attitude with the fans to be awesome (even love what you get after a wiseass fan and defend yourself!), I'd spend my hard earned money on a Journey concert with you at the helm! Keep up the great work, and best of luck to you, wherever the Journey may take you.

To answer the one question, JSS has cited Perry as an influence many, many times. I think it even mentions Perry in his official bio.

I'm pretty sure this is not who you guys are thinking....

He has been on BT and always speaks his mind in a respectful manner; however, that does not stop some from slamming him. From what I've read in his posts his opinion is against the grain.

I must be missing something here, folks. I'm not sure who "JR" is, but, I can assure you that I'm who I say I am. I use this same user name on Balk Talk and have for 5+ years, and I'm sure some of the folks from BT can verify who I am, as I've noticed some of the same names around these parts. Sorry, but I never really knew about this website, until I saw it mentioned on BT. I didn't know you were guilty until proven innocent around these parts! Incidentally, what exactly is wrong with my posting? Did I offend someone? Did I say something wrong? I didn't really think it was at all out of line. I definitely must be missing something here.

There's 2-3 around here who go waaayy overboard with the paranoia. Just ignore them. I've seen your posts at BT, too. You seem to be pretty consistent to me. Welcome.

Sure.

You just provide a voice print and retinal scan and we'll believe it's not Stempler re-born.

From the looks of few posts responding, even though Marbelle gets it, I need to add this

Hey John, good to see ya!
The "paranoia" is just an ongoing joke due to past events. I guess you could say it is an inside joke (or a location joke...you had to be there!) ;)
Don't let it bother ya!

When I did my 1st solo album for Frontiers, Prism, they were asking me for a bonus track to be added an EP CD Single prior to the album's release...they had a live version of that song I did while promoting my 1st ever solo album, Love Parade, in 1994 in which we were just jamming & that was one song we could do with the musicians handy (I guess it was safe to say we all dug Journey too!). The live version not only did I not have rights to as it was released by the label at the time as a promo item, I screwed up the 1st & didn't wanna have to explain that to people like you here that find every nook & cranny to trash me on, ha ha, so I told the label if they wanted THAT song to please let me re-record it. It was simple as I wanted to sound like the version they had a live copy of, stripped down/slower/acoustic version, but also I could concentrate on the performance as well.

I only find singing Perry's stuff challenging in age, not so much vocally....naturally as we get older, our range drops (hell, I have interviews from my 20's & even 30's where I sound like I'm a teenager compared to now) which make it more 'interesting' to hit the things we did back in our indestructable, early years. But proper rest, refraining from the elements (caffeine, alcohol) & proper warmups/warmdowns, I haven't had any real trouble...everyone, I mean EVERYONE has a rough night from time to time but the good nights certainly outweigh the bad. Since the beginning of my involvement out here, I have retrained my way of singing to recapture much of how I naturally/easily did it back in the day...which included singing EVERYTHING Mr. Perry recorded (yes, that includes the high notes on Homemade Love, La Do Da, Sweet And Simple, Lay It Down....shall I continue? I have old cassette recordings...more boots, ha ha). It's more effort now but after the little 2 week break in between legs, things got considerably better...imagine 2-3 even 4 months off (something I have NEVER done in my singing career as singing is how I make my living)!
