"Stone In Love" started life at a party in Journey guitarist Neal Schon's house in San Rafael, California. He came up with the song's signature riff and structure, titling it "Stoned In Love." It changed after singer Steve Perry and keyboardist-guitarist Jonathan Cain finished the lyrics.
Although never a commercial single, "Stone In Love" was a popular rock radio track for the San Francisco Bay Area band, as well as a staple of their live sets.
The Escape album marked the debut of former Babys member Cain, who joined Journey in April 1981 to replace founding member Gregg Rolie. Perry said his impact on the band was immediate -- "Jonathan Cain is such a great lyricist, he helped me go to another place as a writer."
Escape was Journey's most successful studio album, hitting Number One on the Billboard 200 and staying on the chart for 146 weeks. It's sold well over nine million copies.
During the Escape tour, Journey left their own headlining dates to open the first show of the Rolling Stones' 1981 North American tour on September 25 in Philadelphia.
Another memorable show on the tour was at the Cow Palace in San Francisco, where the entire roster of the 49ers football team -- who were en route to their first Super Bowl title -- joined Journey onstage.
FAST FORWARD:

Journey broke up in 1987. The group reunited for a new album in 1996, but Perry's chronic back problems kept them from touring.
In 1998, the group replaced Perry with a soundalike named Steve Augeri (pronounced awe-JEER-ee), and they recorded a new song for the Armageddon soundtrack.
In addition to his work in Journey, Schon also releases solo projects and has recorded an album with his side band Soul SirkUS, which he founded with singer Jeff Scott Soto.
Past and present members of Journey, including Perry and drummer Steve Smith, were on hand last year when the band's star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame was unveiled.
Journey released a new album last year called Generations.
A few dates into their summer tour with Def Leppard, Journey singer Steve Augeri left the group due to chronic throat problems, and he was replaced by Jeff Scott Soto. There's no word on if or when Augeri might return.
Twenty-five years ago today (September 12th, 1981), Escape by Journey hit Number One on the album chart.

The outro solo on SIL is right up there with Schon's best...in my opinion, anyway. 8)

Awesome Post!!! I think EVERYONE shines on SIL. Listen to Ross' s Bass line, it is killer ESPECIALLY throughout that outro solo. This is definitely one oldie that should NEVER exit their live sets!
