Don't have time now...getting ready to go to work. Will give details later.

JSS sounds much, much better live than the boots give him credit for. Only place he sounded bad was the "hooooooooooooooooooold ooons" in Any Way You Want It. Probably should have left those to Deen. Otherwise, I am sold.

My review:

Excellent show! Journey rocked Jersey last night! Jeff was phenominal. He definitely brings a whole new energy to the band and that kept the crowd on their feet for their entire set. I was fortunate enough to be able to stand right in front of the stage for Journey's entire set, thanks to a very accomodating security guard. Jeff's damn hard to get good pictures of, since he never stands still! Oh yeah... no purple for Neal last night. I also got to meet Mindy last night which was cool.

OK. Back from work. Sorry to keep everyone waiting.

I will admit to being skeptical when JSS took over. I have been listening to JSS for a long time, mostly his early work with Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force. He kicked ass there, and he also kicked ass on his cover of Shot in the Dark. I have Soul Sirkus and some of his solo work, but have never heard any of his Talisman stuff. I thought he sounded horrible on virtually all of the bootlegs I have heard since he joined up with Journey, but I wanted to give him a chance to see what he could do live. I had already been to see the show earlier this summer. I went to the first six shows, starting 6/23 in Camden. I also went to Jones Beach, Holmdel, Mohegan Sun, Scranton, and Atlantic City. Last night was the 13th Journey show I have been to since 8/26/05, so I am pretty well-up on what the shows have been like at the end of the Augeri years.

I will start by saying the following things:
- JSS sounds way better live than on the bootlegs
- no mention of Augeri
- after Stone in Love, Jon Cain said something about JSS that I couldn't completely make out, but it was something like asking the crowd to give it up for their new lead singer
- the energy of the band was much higher than it had been the previous 12 times I saw them with Augeri
- JSS and Deen must have been working together quite a bit on their vocals. They are harmonizing very well, and when Deen layers his vocals with Jeff's to hit some higher-range stuff, it sounds spectacular. The casual fan could probably not even notice that it was being done.
- It seems to be clear that Augeri is not coming back.
- They have a new kick-ass t-shirt that may be pretty symbolic. On the front, it has a scarab in the air over a hole in the ground, from which flames are shooting upward, seeminlgy propelling the scarab upwards. This makes one think to the Phoenix rising from its own ashes, as Journey seems to be doing.
- Def Leppard didn't play their homosexual cult classic, Make Love Like a Man. When they play songs like that, they should put ads on the big screen for bars and nightclubs with names like The Manhole, The Toolbox, and Rods.
- During Def Lep's "Woman", they had Joe Elliott in the middle third of the screen, and pictures of the Def Lep "Woman" comic on the other two thirds. There was a funny sequence where Elliott was in the middle, and there was a tight shot of the word LIPS from the comic on either side of him. His vocals are heavily produced. There is no doubt about it. Lots of effects and everything. I like Def Lep and enjoy their shows (have seen them 6 times now this tour- I left Scranton after the Journey set).

A few other observations:
- No Be Good to Yourself. JSS may not have the easiest time with this one, but Augeri couldn't exactly nail it himself.
- They seemed to be mixing JC's mic in a bit heavier on the background vox than they had been before. His voice is very distinct, and it stood out quite a bit.
- Jeff was screwing around on the side of the stage during the intro to Escape, and then he realized his cue was coming up, so he sprinted back to center stage to get to the mic just in time for his cue.
- Stoll Vaughn. Why? This kind of music has no relation at all to Journey or Def Leppard. No crowd reaction for him at all. Is he friends with JC or something? JC and Ross came out to play a few songs with him- JC on harmonica and background vox, and Ross on the upright electric bass.
- Joe Elliott stopped during his set and asked everyone to give it up for Journey. He said they were on the road together for 10 weeks now, and you won't find a greater group of guys than the guys in Journey. Crowd went wild for them.
- Although the place wasn't filling up until later in the Journey set, the crowd was wild into the show, and most were on their feet throughout, even into the 400 seats.
- Saw Rick Allen in the VIP tent with the ILAA people. Didn't see any Journey guys, but wasn't really hanging out like a crazed groupie.
- Nothing from after Frontiers was played.
- For the encore, JSS came out with a New York Knicks Stephon Marbury jersey. He got booed, but then he took it off to reveal a New Jersey Nets Jason Kidd jersey and got quite the response.

I will try to remember the entire set list, but forgive me if it's not in order:
- SSB Intro
- Stone In Love
- Ask The Lonely
- Keep on Runnin'
- Edge of the Blade
- Who's Crying Now
- Chain Reaction
- Lovin, Touchin, Squeezin
- Ghey Piano Solo Intro
- Open Arms
- Lights
- Escape
- Dead or Alive (didn't seem to go over that well)
- Ghey Piano Solo Intro
- Faithfully (Deen)
- Don't Stop Believing
- Any Way You Want It
- Encore - Separate Ways

The video screen has gotten better. Less Windows Media Player, more Journey. Perhaps Microsoft filed suit. For Faithfully, they spliced together clips from the Faithfully video from Frontiers & Beyond, some old clips, and some clips of the current band as well as related personnel, such as Kevin Elson, Rocko & The Devils, the techs and stage hands, and band members' families. Deen held up a magazine with a baby on the cover (one of his children) and kissed the cover between lines.

The piano solos and intros need to go. They're kind of ghey. Add in another rocker or two. Definitely Where Were You. I think JSS could do Place In Your Heart, Higher Place, and Message of Love justice. They need to find a way to do Be Good to Yourself. Maybe put a new spin on it and make it into a JSS-Deen duet.

The only place JSS struggled was in the "hooooooooooooooold ooooooooons" in Any Way You Want It. It didn't sound too good. Deen should take that part, or they should layer together.

I don't do fashion reports. That would be ghey as well.

Great reviews!!
You didn't mention that Steve Augeri was spotted watching the show from the sound booth. He stopped and chatted with his fans and they report that he is looking great. Good news for Augeri fans.
Guess he is still "friends" with the band, not that I ever had any doubts about that.

I don't buy it. No way he was there. Not an Augeri hater either. Not at all, but he needs to take a break and reinvent himself. No way he shows at this gig.

How ironic he was in the sound booth. The last place he should ever be is in a sound booth. Does he not know that is where the LIVE feed is channeled from?

I have a call out to verify this shit.

If this is NOT true, then that is a serious cruel joke to play on the Heffers. They are all getting fired up over the Frauds return. It's like the 2nd coming of Christ.

Well, this is posted in the On the Road section. The thread about it in the GF got the same "you will not continue this conversation" that Carlitto got.

http://www.journeymusic.com/ubb/Forum2/HTML/031921.html

http://www.journeymusic.com/index2.html

Just got home from work so I didn't get to write this till now. I can't believe no one mentioned that Steve Augeri was at PNC last night!! He was watching the show from the sound room. When we recognized him Steve was gracious enough to stop and chat with us and that really made our night!! We told him how much we loved his voice and how much we missed seeing him on stage. He was smiling that million dollar smile of his and he looked AMAZING!!! Steve we miss you and Journey is not the same without you. Hurry back and thanks for taking the time to talk to us fans... that's what makes you stand out from the rest...you are truly a kind and compassionate person, qualities not often seen in regular people, (never mind celebrities!!) God bless you and hope to see you soon. -

The "This will not continue is a mockery of Rustygreenshitinhisjeans." He is some gay moderator who "thinks" he knows Journey. He is as clueless as all those Heffers.
