JSS Doing Kansas "Carry on My Wayward Son"

Folks,

I just heard Yngwie Malmsteem's version of Kansas' "Carry on My Wardward Son" on Alice Cooper's nighly rock show. That song really kicked ass and it had to have JSS on the lead vocals. That cover really kicked ass. Soto, you can rock Kansas full tilt.

Aaron

Slight correction on the song title...It's "Carry on Wayward Son" without the "my". Sorry for being anal, but I've been a huge Kansas fan for awhile now.

Anyway, that version of the song was on Yngwie's "Inspiration" album and has a bunch of other great cover tunes. I don't usually care for cover albums like that, but this one is a really good one.

Here'e the funny thing:
Yngwie DID record a video for this song to promote his "Inspiration" CD... Even though Jeff did the vocals on this particular song, Yngwie chose to have his own singer at the time lipsynch to Jeffs voice. Keep in mind this is not the 1st time Yngwie has done this to Jeff.
Back in 86, he has Marc Boals lips-synch to Jeff's voice on his "I'll see the light tonight" video.

Here's the video for the Kansas cover:

Yeah, that's Mark Boals again!?!
When playing this live, Yngwie even used samples of Jeff singing the 'carry on'-choir after the solo... crazy!

Jesus Christ!!! I had no idea this video existed, it's the 2nd time Boals is in a video with my voice, it's a conspiracy I tell ya, ha ha! The 1st was in 1985 for the video to I'll See The Light Tonight, but thank God I missed that one, see it now & that demon would haunt worse than....ok, I few demons out there :)

May as well add to this little tidbit...it was Jan 1, 2001, my partner in Talisman, Marcel Jacob, & I were working on an offshoot album called Human Clay & we wanted Yngwie to appear on a solo for it. We flew out to Miami after being up all night in Lake Tahoe ringing in the new year...for the recording, bartered services for us to appear on his 'covers' album. All 3 of us were flu ridden those 3 days at his pad, I remember it well, sniffling in his living room with a box of Kleenex each, Nyquil bottles & chicken soup watching Monty Python vids & Scarface throughout the days. You'd have thought it was a convelescent home for rockers at his house as the norm hanging with Yngwie would be a case of beer, a bootle of vodka & boxes of pizza! To this day, I wish someone had taken a photo of it...I would leave the guys in the TV room, go upstairs to Yngwie's studio, squeeze out a vocal take & rejoin them on the couch adding to the sound of blowing nostrils (out, not in!).

Why even listen to the cover the original once again is better
Its increable how the music business is full of people copying classic rock acts
Rod Stewart just redid a Creedence tune
WHY?
The original is better just like in most cases is.
Unless the artist is dead I say let the music live on with the original.

Just like the Queen work this is a nice vocal on this tune
Not so sure the machine gun riffs are appropriate.
Also the entire vid is just a sync job .

Because most of the creative work is accomplished and it's a paying tribute kind of thing, imo.

I disagree
Styx did not pay tribute to the Beatles when they ruined I am The Walrus
They did it to sneek there way on to the radio
This Kansas cover sound pretty much the same to me
I say you want to pay tribute to a band take one of there lesser known tunes and put your spin on it and make it a hit
Like Phil Collins did with Grovey Kind of Love
Nobody knew that song was a cover and Phil made it even better
Its easy to just copy a song note for note but to rework it and make it better is a challange
Another example Lucy In The Sky by Elton I like it better than the Beatle version.

Who IS the guy singing? He's good, but he's not even close to the power of Walsh.

Marcel told me all about this few years ago when we were playing backgammon. he said that probably one of the best times he has had with Yngwie ( probably cause the alcy wasnt around Yng! ) lol

Jeff,
Are you doing the Beatles cover with Yngwie?
And if yes, is Mark on the video as well?
