DAMNED IF HE DOES

Damned if he doesn’t.

I know it’s a huge catch 22, but I’m having a problem with some of the boots, bc Soto sounds like he’s imitating Perry…

The IBAWY boot is great, but it’s also a little creepy for me.

Can’t explain it.

On Save Me, he doesn’t sound like Mercury, he just sounds GREAT! He’s true to the song without imitating.

Not sure what the answer is. Like I said, damned either way.

I can’t wait for some new material!! And maybe I’ll get a chance to see them live, and I'll get over it.

I know this won’t make me Ms Popularity, and I so don’t mean any offense. I really like his voice. (And he’s pretty cute, too.)

Just saying….

(U can throw ur stones at me now )

Although Jeff is going to always inject his own stylings to whatever he sings, he is still going to try and remain true to these Journey classics. Not to mention that Perry is one of Jeff's biggest influences. I think it is great. I can't remember the song but, when I saw them back in July, Jeff used some phrasing and melody EXACTLY like Perry did LIVE and it was cool as hell to here the song sung that way again. I think it is just Jeff being a fan of The Voice.

He sounded a lot like SP in the IBAWY clip, especially
the line "...you were there..."

or better yet,

"Yee-eew wuh they-ahhhh"

I'm with Carlitto on this one! I'm not sure Jeff sounding a bit like Perry will ever be a bad thing if he's singing songs that Perry's voice made famous. I also thought Jeff sounded a lot like Perry on the IBAWY clip on his website, and was pretty impressed, considering I don't think Jeff has a voice that sounds anything like Perry's.

Let us not forget that Augeri was hired for one reason and one reason only...Neal and Jon thought he sounded a lot like Perry. I think Neal and Jon have always tried to keep the "Classic Journey" sound as close to the original as they could, and that is never an easy feat when trying to emulate Perry's vocals.

EXACTLY! Lol. I think it’s amazing how close he sounds. He’s obviously a big fan, ‘cause he has every inflection down. I can imagine it’s even better live and in person! But while I’m incredibly impressed, there’s just something about him doing it EXACTLY like Perry that also kind of sits with me wrong. I’m just a bit torn, I guess. No biggie.

If this display by Jeff really "weirds" you out all that much, I'd strongly urge you to stay away from the Hugo dude! That dude stole Perry's DNA! At least Soto is his own person and makes no attempt to be Perry!

Lol, thanks for the warning. Soto doesn’t weird me out in the least (Hugo does, a little  ). I like what I’ve heard of Talisman. I’m just “voicing” my struggle a little with the every inflection thing. Like on Chain Reaction. Awesome. The boots a bit rough, but he doesn’t seem to do the every inflection thing. I’m still learning. Look forward to more boots. Wish I could see them live… Blah, blah, blah. I’ll work it out I'm sure. I'm definitely not giving up on them. :D

That probably was the main reason, but the guys have mentioned they were also looking for someone that could take them forward to new places, as well.
Not sure if I believe them, but there ya' go.

Quite honestly, Ive been singing along with Perry for so long I dont think i'd ever be able to sing it differently, The inflections of Perry are just part of the song...I dont know how Jeremy can do it in his clips (change up the melody I mean)

Nothing new here. Whenever anybody sings a classic Journey tune, they're always compared to and said to be "imitating" Perry.

AMEN. U took the words out of my mouth. I was just gonna say that when I (yes a female) sing along with Perry, I end up with his inflections especially in words like "stah-nding" which I can't sing as "standing". I'm sure it's the same thing with Jeff. We have all heard these songs for years & sung them that way. There's no way to get them out of our heads and sing them a different way. (Well maybe after Jeff has been singing them for a long time, he'll be able to. He is a professional after all & will probably add his own little melodies & stuff.)

That's SO true! I guess it just seems different because when I do it, it sounds NOTHING like Perry, lol.
great point!
And DAMN Chain Reaction is awesome!!! I feel a little like I'm cheating, lol. Again, I can't explain it... stupid I know. But it's just so close to Perry! (to me, Augeri NEVER sounded this close)
I'm getting over it, lol. Listening to EOTB right now. man o' man

Yeah it's a bit like cheating for us diehard Perryheads. I get where ur coming from. But Jeff totally freakin' steals EOTB doesn't he?

LMFAO!!

(though, while this is good to know, lol, for me, it's not about what Perry thinks. it's just about the music and how it feels listening to it... hard to explain without going all epic, lol.)

I was referring to people saying they feel like they are "cheating". Like Perry would be mad at them for liking any other Journey frontman.

Yeah, I thought you were talking to me, lol, because I said that a few posts up.
But again, that's not what I meant.
Love Perry, but you're right, I don't think he cares who I listen to.

I hope he'd prefer us liking a manly man who has his own style of singing rather than a lookalike/soundalike. Also someone with gumption like Jeff who isn't afraid to say what's on his mind over someone who just smiles all the time.

Frankly, I don't how anyone can step into being front man for Journey and NOT be compared with Steve Perry. In fact, unless you've never heard of Journey before and never heard one of their Steve Perry-fronted songs, you can't HELP but compare with Perry.

Soto sounds similar in some respects and not in others. It likely depends upon the range of the song and how he sings it.

Ultimately, I doubt seriously that Soto is trying to imitate Perry. It's just the way his voice sounds.

Lordy, lordy lordy! This is what I’m talking about!!

Edge of the Blade - Demo - Human Clay (JSS side project)
http://www.yousendit.com/transfer.php?a ... A178B4D2FA

He doesn’t sound like Perry here, he just sounds fantastic!!
He so made this song his own! WOW!!!

And the freakin’ guitar on this one:

Your on your Own (from a a benefit concert for Burrel JR High School in San Mateo, CA, 1977)

Neal really is God, lol.

I'm a happy girl with all of the great music floating around these days.

(I don't remember who shared these (so much music floating around) but THANK U!!)

Boy, that IS different. Perry's version is angry, this one's a little evil, lol. LOVED it!
Q for JSS: What was this for? and did you do any more like it?

I don't like it being a little slower than what I am used to. Jeff sounds great and it is a little darker and heavier. But I do prefer the original. However, this definately makes you wonder what new Journey will sound like!

It comes from "Brazillian Nights" a Brazillian Journey Tribute CD.

My absolute favorite version was on the Philly 83 concert. OMG!!!! nobody will ever touch that, for me. BUT, I do like this verson very much. I like the harder, heavier vibe. Perfect example,, though, of the difference of opinions of us JRNY fans. an amazing version, but some will want jrny to go this way, others are dead set that he do all the songs like Perry did. (not that you're saying that)
Personally, I will always prefer Perry's version of the songs he made famous (esp live), but I also welcome a harder version of jrny. Schizoid that way, i guess, lol.

And thanks for the heads up about the tribute album!
But about "Brazilian Nights," I can't find a reference to it anywhere (not even on the Human Clay site) any suggestions where to look???
thanks

Yeah, Augeri is definitely a pussy, but Perry didn't exactly walk around manly did he?
