Deen Castronovo Vocals

I just got finished listening to the Hollywood Bowl boot. Damn, can Deen sing! This guy really pulls off "Faithfully" without a hitch. The line "They say that the road ain't no place to start a family" is simply flawless! I know some people will probably be critical and say he's trying too much to sound like Perry. I say...so fucking what!!!! Wouldn't you try to sound like Perry if you could? Many have tried to sound like Perry over the years and most aren't capable of pulling it off. Deen comes pretty close...at least on "Faithfully", he does. Between Deen and our pal "Liquid Drummer", I'm beginning to wonder what's going on in the world of drumming that all these guys seem to have pretty solid pipes. Who knew?

Thank you,,i've heard him sing live and boy, can he. The boots don't due him justice. Unless someone hears him sing live they cannot knock his vocals.

I think the fact that Deen has such a strong vocal ala Mr Perry gives the band such a massive advantage. For those that want to hear that type of vocal on the more sugary stuff its perfect. When the guys wanna rock out more there is JSS.
Its no wonder there is a groundswell about Journey at the moment, I truly believe if they get some new exciting stuff recorded and out soon the band will continue into a new era of sucess, maybe not to the extent of the 80's but surely eclipsing this last decade.

The reality is that Deen has a similar sounding voice and he can't help it!

That's what he has and he might as well use it. He sounds great on Faithfully.

LOL, you've been watching that Mother/Father vid too haven't ya? He's amazing ain't he!

Been saying that for awhile now.........between Deen and JSS.......I'm enjoying this incarnation of Journey.....and it's because I finally feel they are doing Perry proud too.

You bet I have! Thanks for turning me onto that video of Deen doing Mother/Father! That performance REALLY shows what a tremendous talent Deen is. I can never badmouth Steve Smith, as he's from my home state of Massachusetts. That said, Deen takes it to a whole new level with Mother/Father. What a kickass performance!

Deen is amazing... the only one besides Perry himself who can do ROR songs justice IMO.
Suzanne was a real treat last year.

I hope that, when the guys go out on thier own, they throw M/F and Suzanne back in the set for Deeno to sing...
He slays them both!

Deen does have amazing vocals. Just once question though....why is it okay for Deen to sound like Perry but not JSS?
I love to hear Deen doing Still They Ride.....That has actually become my favorite Journey song of all time.

Well, as I said in my post...I have really NEVER understood the criticism for someone "sounding like Perry". It's sort of like saying someone pitches like Roger Clemens...So what!!!! If someone actually has the ability to pull that off, I say more power to them. How many of the jackasses being critical of Jeff or Augeri for "sounding like Perry" have any shot of emulating Perry's sound??? I think the reality is that JSS has been fairly open about the fact that Perry was a VERY strong musical influence in his life, so why the hell would he not do his best to do the Perry catalogue the justice that it deserves? I never thought Jeff or Augeri tried to be Perry (ala Hugo). These guys have their own styles and simply try to sing Journey's music the way it is supposed to be sung! I can tell you that any vocalist who would come into Journey and not sing these classic songs pretty close to the way they were recorded would NEVER EVER be accepted by most Journey fans!
I can tell you when I listened to Paul Rodgers completely change the original arrangement of Queen's classic music, it turned me off completely! For me personally, I have no desire to hear the music I grew up listening to be completely changed around. While some may find re-arranging songs to be "new and fresh", I find it to be sacrilege and almost disrespectful to the original songs!

I agree John, and the first thing that came to mind was Bon Jovi's -This Left Feels Right.......a reworking of their old hits (different sound to them). It bombed big time. Like JBJ even said people don't want you messing with their memories. And this was even the same original singer singing them.

Very fine performance. MUCH better than when I saw him. He did Still They Ride and it was very average. THIS performance was above average.

Awesome!!! Exactly my point I have been trying to make in other threads! I'll tell ya...If someone thought I sounded like Steve Perry, I'd take that as a compliment! I suppose the ones who are being so critical of Jeff are saying to be orginial.....but obviously they have never listened to a JSS album.

Heard Deen do After The Fall and Mother/Father in 04 and they were amazing !!! ATF was one of the songs of the night in Boca raton in 04 and He NAILED IT. I have a dvd of the show and he is pounding away at the drums and singing his heart out !!!
