I have to be honest. I had a tough time listening to this. I was told this is from 6/22/99. If so it's the beginning of Augeri-era. He is already really straining to reach those notes & this is like a preview of what was yet to come. U can hear even here that this man's voice was never going to last. It sounds like he's blowing it out on Live & Breathe a track he recorded, not Perry. Actually I'm surprised his voice lasted as long as it did. He sounds off key in places especially on World Gone Wild. I feel sorry for him. Stone In Love is probably the best track.

Honestly if anyone can still be tough about Jeff's first few nites w/the band after listening to this, well I don't know what to say.

I tried listening to these with my ears and not my heart, and yes I have to admit some of it was very difficult to hear.

Thank you for posting these, and for showing some compassion in your assesment of them.
I still think Steve has/had a great voice and a great stage presence, but clearly some of these songs seem out of his reach. Maybe he was just having a bad night? :(

I know, I know.................don't go there! I still love his "studio" voice!!

Thanks again for the post.

You know...I've always liked most of the tracks on Arrival. Live and Breathe is a great song, and Augeri sounds AWFUL trying to sing this song live! Neal's guitar work is flawless, as always, but Augeri's voice is VERY rough. Nobody will certainly accuse this of being taped! I honestly didn't realize Augeri struggled quite this much to hit high notes. The sad thing is that this isn't even a Perry song he's struggling on...It's one of his own!

This had only barely been Augeri's first anniversary with the band. My guess is - Bad night. Listen to Ask The Lonely. Had I posted criticism of that before July 2006, I would be deemed a traitor who didn't like Journey, but that is unlistenable. I know he performed better than this between 99 and 2003, this is one of the worst boots I'd heard. Imagine being a singer in a tribute band and listening to shit like that, and then having people say "Hey douchebag, if you could do better, why aren't you in the band?" Just reinforces my belief that Schon & Co were existing in purgatory for the past 8 years.

That is not a particularly good night. I have that show on VHS, and with the video it's a little easier to deal with. I have tons of shows Augeri era stuff. Some nights were very good, others were not - like most bands. It's always interesting when you have a lot of shows from the same band (especially from the same tour).

Well, how on earth could u?
The only thing most fans have to go on is the pro-tooled Vegas dvd which misrepresents Augeri as a vocal god in the same league as Perry, Deyoung etc.
Not a fair indicator of Augeri AT ALL.

The sad thing is that this isn't even a Perry song he's struggling on...It's one of his own!

Other fans have discussed this previously.
He frequently bastardized his own songs.

Find me a decent boot of "Higher Place".
I defy you.

I'm defied, because it NEVER works live. Never. It's not only an Augeri thing, either, per se....the keys always seem to be too loud, deen doesn't bother hitting some key drum licks from the Arrival version, or Neal strays too far from his Arrival Higher Place solos.....or the combo of all of them.
Most of all, the abrupt (and completely cool, very dramatic) ending of the song as it's recorded disappears instead dragging out to the typical live gutiars/drums orgy ending.

I never heard a boot of Higher Place, but they opened with it on Under the Radar, and at the WV State Fair, it sounded pretty good.

I'm willing to bet the version of ASL u derided in this thread sounded good to concertgoers, as well.
It's not until u get the boot that one begins to detect all the inconsistencies.

Sorry Larry. To me it's rough all the way through. Ouch. He just can't hit the notes. It sounds like he's in pain by the end of the song & all off key as well. No wonder he shot his voice. He was killing it 5 yrs ago, maybe 7 yrs ago.

I've heard a few bands at work try to do Journey tunes & sound like that & the singers have been shaking their heads afterwards saying never again. (These were requests.)

Sorry from me too Larry..that one hurt my ears...sounded rough and scratchy and off-key and he could not hit the high notes...I really like this song too... :)

I'm sorry, JR, I listened to a few, but he was bad this nite and a few other nites too. I couldn't even download these. I didn't realize how bad he was cause I saw live concerts that were lipped and didn't know it. He actually sounded and looked good last Nov. at HOB in Myrtle Beach on 30th anniversary tour compared to June 06 in Camden NJ. That whole nite was prolly lipped. :( :( :(

Not necessarily....There were plenty of songs, including Ask The Lonely, that were performed that night that were much worse than Augeri's take on Higher Place.
