Sam Cooke-ism's

Most people know that Steve Perry is a Sam Cooke fan. I am, too. It was the Sam Cooke-ism's that I heard in his performances that drew me to him.

Listen to Sam's "A Change is Gonna Come". The first line:
I was born by the river...

SP's line from ROR/"Happy To Give" is perhaps a tribute to Sam:
I was born a believer...

A definite Sam Cooke-ism.

Know any others?

fred_journeyman posted this in another thread:

fred_journeyman wrote:The song that is the precursor to "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'" is "Nothing Can Change This Love" by Sam Cooke. There's even one part where Sam sings "Ooooo make me weep and make me cry" in the exact same way (with virtually the same words) that Perry sings it in LTS.

I have another one. In Sam's "Win Your Love For Me" he starts off with "Whoa - oh -oh - oh - oo - whao, little girl..." which can be heard in JOURNEY's "Little Girl" from their Dream After Dream album. It's a bit slower as their song isn't as upbeat but you can hear it!
