And then, halfway down, he "slams on the brakes" in midair, rights himself, and lands....

I have no idea. I had a cat that was about that high strung. Another fave of mine - Pepe LePew. It reminded me of my "boy" cat chases my "girl" cat. They were both fixed, but he was always trying to get it on with her.
