OK...more detail:

We got back from "Guitar Center" to pick up Mark's new set of "TAMA" Octobans.

According to one of the guys there, Octobans are now "dinosaur"...

....To which I throw a Yellow Flag, and yell, "FOUL!!"

THEY KICK ASS!!

Why is this??

Simon Phillips still uses them. I think they sound cool.

As for Guitar Center, I think this about sums it up:

Dude, whatever....it IS America, you're allowed to your opinion...

But the staff there got Mark a SWEET set of Octos - BETTER than his originals.

So, whatever.....

Well, congrats to your drummer.

I prefer to spend my cash at smaller stores where they actually know about what they sell.
GC is a successful corporation, good for them. Their goal is to squash the mom & pop stores,
and take over the world. I don't feel right helping them with that.

Well, without the trade-in of Mark's old Octos (which were the smaller version), it would've been $600.00

BUT ~ since they were COOL and accepted his TRADE-IN, PLUS other equipment, it only came to: $400 and change.

Not a drummer here but a guitar player. Proud owner of a Neal Schon signature Les Paul -- an amazing instument. The sustainer in the guitar is incredible. I'm currently gigging 3-4 times per month and loving it.

Never played with a drummer that used octos. They remind me of long stacked roto toms but must sound much deeper I'm guessing. There must be a few musicians that frequent this forum. I noticed in one of the Baltimore party pics that AR had a Marshall combo up against the wall.

Nice. Why did he trade in his other ones, out of curiousity (or did he trade in something ELSE for these)?

I think I'll tentatively stick my toe in the water here and maybe get the ball rolling...this could be a legendary thread. :D

Let's see....I don't have anything super shocking to tell you so I'm sorry if this is kinda pathetic. lol

We were playing a Hurricane Katrina benefit (which was being recorded for radio) and our ex-singer/rhythm guitarist broke a string on the very first song sending his guitar horribly out of tune and forcing us to stop and I had to give him my guitar that I use for dropped-d tuning. (We normally tune to Eb standard.)

And later on in our set....

My volume knob fell off my guitar. It kinda dropped off into my hand. I dropped the volume knob in a safe place on stage where I thought no one would step on it or anything and finished the song.

Then came our closing song. I picked up the volume knob and had to pound it pretty hard against the guitar to get it to stay. We started the song and *CLLALNGGNR* I was out of tune. BADLY. I had no time to stop and retune and just tried to compensate as best I could.

And wouldn't you know it....they ended up using that track in the radio broadcast. Major cringe moment.

There's my little "starting things off" story. Let's hear everybody else's. :)

They are not. Mike Portnoy of Dream Theater uses them. There are many other prog rock drummers that use them.

Now, Roto-Toms...those should stay obsolete.

Yeah, but I've never traded anything for something else, with my kit. I usually just ADD to what I have. :D

Hey, how many drummers out there have dropped sticks during an important moment in a song? I have...and it STILL freaks me out! I know nearly every drummer from time to time drops a stick, but it's incredible to see drummers like Peart or whomever, simply glance down, pick up another stick, keep going without even missing a beat.

I manage to keep going, but I don't like the feeling of not having a stick in one of my hands (usually my right) even for a split second!

It's heavy -- 10.5 lbs. Once it's strapped on I really don't notice it - even after a 4 hour gig.

I've never played a Les Paul but I do have a Strat. I've heard that Les Pauls are very light compared to Strats. Is that true, because I think mine easily ways more than 10.5 lbs.

My Epiphone Les Paul is cosiderably heavier than my Strat. If I play it for a long time standing up my shoulder gets a bit sore from the weight of the guitar.

Hey, low d...8)

Are those the "octagon-looking" electric drums that Prince always used?

They had that creepy, mechanical sound to them....but, they fit Prince to at "T" (if that's what they are).

I sing and play a pretty mean Crescent-tambourine...."fire engine Red", of course...
Image

I also play Keyboards, and Fred ~ I can TOTALLY relate (keyboard-wise) to "dropping a stick":

We used to play "Where The Streets Have No Name", by U2....and GUESS WHO had to learn the Keys AND sing?? :x

Well, long story short.....I COMPLETELY MANGLED the beginning "Church Organ" thing so bad one night, that we had to start the song over:oops:

I managed to joke my way out of it....I said, "Yup....and THAT'S WHY I'm a SINGER!" LOL

Lar, you completely crack me up

Fred, to answer your question:

He traded his High-Pitch Octos and a Foot-Cowbell & Pedal (he got kinda inspired and "carried away" after the "Modern Drummer" thing....but he didn't like it )
