I know you are most likely reading this. So...I thought I'd share this reply in response to one of my earlier posts. Have fun with it..
"I believe in having a good time, but do it with people you know, be careful, my cousin used to perform with these guys and they spent their $ on drugs as fast as they got it, had girls in every town, and several children along the way. he was the only one smart enough to invest the money wisely and still gets paid every time they perform. so bad Neil was doing drugs in plain site of his eldery aunt and he had to take him aside and say hey this is my family, cool it."
All I've got to say is UGH.

Wasn't Pery's cousin on the pre-Perry Journey road grew?
And isn't he the one who gave Herbie Steve's tape?
So, is someone pretending to be this guy? Jack Villanueva.
Intersting.

No. Herbie told Fleischman that Perry was John Villaneuva's Portuguese cousin so that Perry could hang out w/out Herbie having to immediately fire Fleischman.
Herbie found Perry's demo tapes while looking for a frontman.

I remember Herbie saying Perry and his tapes kept appearing to him until he finally gave them a listen. Isn't that right?

I'd have to re-read his interview, but I thought Perry KEPT appearing to him but he hadn't heard Perry sing. Then, he was going thru demo tapes & heard "the voice" & looked to see who it was & there it was.

Yeah, something like that. TNC? 28? A little help?

Here's the part from Herbie's interview:
Perry had been hovering around in my life for years. And, I knew that he was talented but I'd been told (about him) by people that knew him from Fresno - from childhood, from his cousin. His cousin and one of my best friends were big-time dealers in the city. And Perry would come up and 'shanghai' him for drugs - you know, 'you gotta give them to me, if you don't, then I'm going back home to Fresno, Larry, and tell your mom.' That's called 'shanghaiing'. (Meanwhile,) he's saying, "Give this tape to Herbie, give this tape to Herbie" to Larry and Jack Villanueva (Jack, along with his brother John, worked with Herbie throughout his years with Santana, and continued working with him on Journey). Jack would never give me the tape. And I said (to Jack), "Why, what about that guy?" He'd say 'you don't want him. Even that good, even if you were talking about Elvis Presley right there, he's just a jive mother-fucker.'

Heck if they were on drugs... dont you think the BTM episode would have took 45 minutes and talked about how it almost destroyed the band...

They were on the road in the 70s and 80s. Of course there were drugs involved, whether it was just a smoke at the whacky or something harder than that, it would be silly to say there definetely wasn't.
As for the shagging bit, they're men... they had female fans who obviously wanted it... again, silly to think it didn't happen.

Poor Aunty Schon...
??? The sentence prior to that referred to Perry, didn't it? So I was assuming this one did as well as there was nothing indicating we were changing which "he/his" we were talking about so ...wasn't it Auntie Perry?
(btw, at least Perry kept
his drugs away from everyone's aunties though! Neal...or Neil... should have taken a lesson! LOL!)

Not TNC or 28 but this is what I got from the BTM and an interview Steve did during the Captured album promotions. The label wanted a frontman to make the band radio friendly or they were going to drop them. Somebody from Columbia (I believe his name was Don Ellis(?)) gave Herbie the Alien Project demo tape and
suggested he give Perry a try with the band. As Perry told it, this Ellis(?) actually called him about the gig before the call that Herbie talks about in the BTM.
The comment that Herbie made in the BTM about Perry having been in and out of his life for years was referring to the things that he later explained in his imfamous Castles Burning interview as quoted here by jrnyjunky.

One thing is for sure, Herbie never wavered on stories about the guys, they were always constantly the same, with very little if any variation. That's more than I can say for most people in the music biz. Whether factual or total BS, Herbie believed what he said, enough to say the same all the time.

I think it was pretty common knoweldge that the band was heavily into weed smoking. Wasn't one of the there production co names "Weed High Music". Also, Herbie mentioned Ross's cocaine habit. I don't get the feeling that they were shooting heroine in anyones kitchen at a family reunion though.
Hanging with bands in SF in the seventies like the Greatful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, and Santana I am sure that the band experimented with and did alot of drugs, but I don't think it ever became a life or carreer threating problem ala Motley Crue, GnR, Hendrix, etc.
Sounds like someone with an ax to grind and would say anything to taint the character of the Journey guys.

Nope, Perry would give his cousin demo tape after demo tape that he would give to Herbie. Herbie never listened to them. He finally gave it to Tower of Power when they were looking for a new singer. Then later, when Herbie was looking, he had lunch with the Tower of Power guys and Perry's name came up. That's when he listened to the tape. The rest is history.

Shania's book has a different version of this. I wonder how many versions there are?
