I know the band is a business, but a show like that would strip away any idea that what they do is an art form as well. It would put them right up there with Britney for me. They've already been given a bad name as being a corporate rock band and participating in a show like this would be the final nail in that coffin IMO.
That being said I like that you're thinking of new ways of promoting the band.

It COULD have that negative connotation IF they did an ENTIRE album/CD of songs written by others. I'm talking about including ONE song by an unknown songwriter on their next CD. The show would have a built-in fanbase and generate a ton of excitement for the band. This is something that would be mutually beneficial to both them and the songwriters. Too many songwriters NEVER get their work noticed and here comes Journey, alongside a group of aspiring songwriters not only to encourage them in their work, but to help them achieve something for themselves as songwriting artists. If I was their PR person, I would strongly look into this for them.
I think it could be an extremely positive thing for both parties...IF it was done well. It would also allow us to see the guys just talking and giving advice to aspiring songwriters, as opposed to always seeing them in "performance mode" on stage. I would tune in and I don't normally go in for reality shows at all.

Yes it is tacky, doesn't mean it couldn't work. Why else did Faith Hill flip when she lost an award to a "reality" creation?![]()
Even an apprearnce on American Idol where they let Randy Jackson sit in or something would garner some attention.
Sometimes you have to think outside the box. Traditional methods like just releasing a record, having it promoted, and getting airplay simply do not work anymore. If they did, Arrival would have scored a couple of hits - had anyone in the general public heard it.

I absolutely agree that it could generate a whole new audience for Journey. The trick would be not having Journey appear like a has-been band desperate for publicity. How do you spin it to keep them "cool"?

That would get them into millions of homes where people would vote for the songwriter and the song. The winning song/songwriter would not only get their song on the next Journey CD, but they would get a contract with a label to produce songs for other groups. The show would not only feature Journey every week, but build a huge fanbase with those who might not have heard of Journey. By the time the show had finished its run, momentum would have hopefully built so that the forthcoming CD would have a lot of fanfare and pre-release hype and interest.
Every few weeks, the band would take a song that's received the most votes and play it live for the crowd.
They would be no worse off than they are now and maybe further ahead. I'm dead serious. It would be a show that I would watch and it would probably be a heckuva lot more interesting that Tommy Lee's Supernova show.
Andrew, this is a positive approach and I think it has merit. Others will disagree, I'm sure, but it cannot be ignored that reality shows can make or break people. As much as I can't stand reality shows in general, some have merit.

A documentary style show might work....Oh well, you're right, it is fun to talk about...You never know, there could be the seed of something genius in it.

Not unless they have sex tapes to hide.Seriously, I don't see them in the same sentence as that no-talent skank, no matter what the reason.

Maybe, but I tended to think the Osbournes was pretty tacky. Funny yes, but pretty tacky.
But if we take your idea and combine it with a docu-style show, it could be interesting.
Okay, maybe forget the songwriting thing altogether and just go with following the band around for the next six months as they finish the tour and (hopefully) prepare for a new CD. That would be pretty interesting.
yak wrote:Osbournes were very tacky. Ozzy was incoherent (probably a good thing) most of the time.
So Fred, did you ever catch Gene Simmons/Family Jewels? What did you think? A pretty decent family unit, and very funny at times, with no F words every 3 seconds. His kids are even pretty normal.

That's a good idea. Didn't VH-1 sponsor (in part) one of Journey's tours not long ago?
Jeremey wrote:Dude, VH-1 sponsored this tour!
whocares wrote:That would make too much sense Fred. The company that owns MTV/VH1 isn't interested much in music being on TV anymore. At least not "real" music.
I'm all for having a Journey concert broadcast on VH1 Classic, where they actually do play music most of the time, but unfortunately, I don't see it happening. Why? It makes too much sense.

Journey TV Reality Show - Seriously

SF-DANO wrote:Fred, I like the idea and also like the documentary style idea. While it may come off cheesy to many of us here, it is apparently what works with the majority of people out there now. The success that INXS is having now is directly attributable to the TV show in my opinion.
As far as Cain sharing the song writing spotlight, I really don't think that would be a problem for one tune. Jack Blades wrote/collaborated with Neal on a few of the tunes on Arrival. And who is to say that the "winning" song could not be tweaked a little bit musically by the band after. Again, referencing INXS, the song "Pretty Vegas" written by JD Fortune was ever so slightly tweeked for its realese on the CD with other members of the band getting writing credit on it.
If Journey wants any type of major comeback (ie. top 10 billboard), this is the kind of out of the box opportunity they should take advantage of.
