I've tried to stay out of this whole "apology" thing, but can do so no longer! Who really gives a rat's ass about "uniting" BT and MR? I certainly don't and never will. People say "We're all Journey" fans. I say SO FUCKING WHAT! What the hell does that have to do with anything? I've been a Red Sox fan most of my life, and certainly don't feel compelled to be friends with every Red Sox fan on the planet! The reality is that we're all VERY different people from VERY different worlds, and that will never change. As Lula expressed earlier, we all have very different senses of humor as well!

The one thing I really have an issue with is this "holier than thou", sanctimonious attitude I see from Balktalkers about how awful MR is and how much they're bashed here. The reality is that the only reason I ever even heard about this site was because of the constant bashing I used to see on BT when I was a member on that site! Many people on that site have always been a bit annoyed that Andrew has Journey news before the "official" site gets the news, and have expressed as much. I say so what...If you know the news about your favorite band is here first, come and read it. Andrew was the one who took the high road and decided to wait until Journey had an "official" announcement about their lead singer, before publishing the interviews he had with the guys, weeks ago, and the guy still gets shit for that!

There is a very simple solution for all of us. If you don't like BT, don't post on the site! If you don't like MR, don't post on this site. I can tell you that as soon as I found out there was a Journey forum I could visit, and actually express my honest opinions about my favorite band, I never posted on BT again! I simply grew tired of the nonsense of not being able to express any opinions without 10 people whining about it or getting an email from a mod, telling me that I should probably change my opinion! The only reason I stayed on that site as long as I did was that I felt it was my only option to talk about Journey!

BT and MR cater to two VERY different groups of people, and that is how it should be. If you're someone who finds some vulgarity to be distasteful, you'll probably find BT to be a fine place to hang out. If you're someone who enjoys a good laugh, and prefer to discuss things, other than wiggles and red leather pants, you'll probably find MR to be a bit more palatable!

I think something worth mentioning is that people really take any of this shit FAR too seriously! This is an internet message board, folks! Nobody here is curing cancer, ending world hunger, or bringing our troops home from Iraq! These boards are meant to be light-hearted and an escape from the real world, and nothing more than that! If you're taking things more seriously, it may be time for a new hobby! I can't say that I'm all that surprised about the mods response to Dean's apology. I've been saying for years that most of that group thinks their place in this world is FAR more significant than it will ever be. Their response simply affirmed what I've always believed! I think instead of calling a "truce" next time, we should just have members of BT stay on their boards, and we'll stay on our boards! Honestly, after being on both boards, I don't know why members on this site would ever want to post on BT, with the way that site is currently operated. I also don't know why member of BT would ever want to post here. If we stay out of each other's way, Andrew can have some peace and quiet in his life and not be forced into referee mode! Okay...my rant is over (for now!)

Agree with much of what you said, especially the section about taking it all too seriously.

Me..I'll continue to post on both as I've made a lot of friends over time on BT, and most of them probably wouldn't post over here. I also value this place for information and the more colourful conversations

I think uniting the fans does not make sense - we don't need to be united - we are different and that should be celebrated not beaten like a round peg into a square hole.

John, some of what you say is absolutely true and I completely agree with it. Some of what you say is very blinkered and absolutely untrue. I disagree that we are destined always to be on opposing sides.

You describe the extremes of both boards as though that is all that they contain. Why does it have to be either/or?

I come to MR because I enjoy maybe 50% of the threads here and avoid or ignore some of the others. There are fun threads and serious threads and informative threads and I am happy to participate here, even if it does go against the grain of many of you. They too have fun threads, serious threads and informative threads, as well as your dreaded 'wiggle' threads.

And don't tell me that here is the only place you can discuss Journey. Have a look over the past few months and tell me what proportion of threads here have actually discussed Journey. The vast majority have focused on inter-board personality clashes and one-upmanship, or about subjects completely unrelated, or are just purile jokes. I quite like some of the jokes and the fun (I'm not nearly as anal as my tone might suggest, honest ) but BT is no worse in that respect. Maybe the jokes are tamer and the bitching uses less colourful language...

This is not intended to sound 'sanctimonious' and I for one have never bashed MR either here or over there. I have in the past pointed out faults on both sides, but they are always based on logical argument.

One comment you made particularly struck me. You said that BT's response simply affirmed what you've always believed. Some people there felt the same about Dean's original apology, in that his reversal of attitude a couple of days later simply affirmed what they'd believed. Notice a pattern here? People have entrenched attitudes that they are unable, or unwilling, to waver from. In my opinion both are wrong.

As you say, this is just a message board. Yesterday's atrocities in Iraq put that into perspective. All I'm asking for is civility. We don't have to be best buddies, but we don't have to keep actively stirring the pot.

For the record...my comment about the only place I can discuss Journey was only part of my quote! I said MR was the only place (that I knew of) where I could discuss Journey openly and honestly, without being admonished by a mod through email about what my opinions should be. I think if you re-read my original post, I was quite clear about what my thoughts were!Nowhere in my thread did I say Journey was the only thing discussed here!

For the record, I certainly have seen a few intelligent discussions and debates on BT over the years, but 99% of them end up locked or deleted, and that just doesn't work for me. Honestly, I didn't start this thread as a "Let me bash BT" thread. I think I've made my feelings VERY well known on BT (when I was still posting there) and here. I think it is a VERY poorly run site and a complete embarrassment to Journey fans. Honestly, if it weren't Journey's "official" website, I wouldn't even have an opinion about the place. As someone who has been a very passionate Journey fan since the late 70's. I simply feel like a band's "official" website should have a whole lot more to offer its fans.

The one thing that you and I have no difference of opinion on are the threads we skip. MR is not a perfect website, nor do I expect it to be. There are indeed mindless postings here, as well, and I skip right by them. That said, the GF over at BT has turned into Mindless Central! The same 5 threads are "bumped" by the same 5 people, EVERY hour of EVERY day! As I said...If that actually passes as "discussion" over there and people actually find stuff like that interesting...more power to them! As a fan, I still hold out hope that Journey will someday change their "official" site in cyberspace to something other than "Tiger Beat"! I found that shit extremely annoying when I was 15, and find it much more annoying now that I'm 36!

Good post unfortunatley i found far to many sad trainspotter type fans on the other board to want to unite with!

I have no interest in that site. It is way too juvenile & almost high school ! I made a statement to a mod and she threatened to call my carrier. So ,I called them and they laughed and said you must have ruffled somebody's feathers. I said I didn't even use any cuss words and my carrier said they wouldn't have cared if I did. Several of the mods there are a gustapo and the band would be smart to check on them. They really do alienate many fans,when on some of their little power trips. Long live MR. It is fun & always entertaining and informative. I have learned many new words that I did not know existed.

From one Sox fan to another....most of the time Sox fans get along. I was a "lurker" here at MR but now find myself coming here everyday. Your right, you say something wrong on BT and most of the time you get chewed out. Your also right in that you get more information here than anywhere. Andrew does a GREAT job here. I started reading both boards back in July when Jeff joined Journey, since being a fan of his I wanted to follow what else may happen for him with this big leap in his career. I didn't know much about BT at all & when I tried to register (only after seeing some negative things about Jeff that I wanted to defend, lol), couldn't even join, it said "not accepting new members" or some crap like that. So oh well! lol

Stuff over here is more fun to read anyhow, lol.

There is no such thing as “uniting” the Journey fans.
Whoever thinks that would be possible,is on serious crack.
To understand what the future might bring,one has to take a long hard look at the past.
Just think about Journey’s fanbase along the years….This is the most disturbed, divided, hateful fanbase I have ever seen.
There’s always been a feud between these people,and I am not talking about the casual Journey fans who attend the shows or have a few Journey records at home,but the diehards,for whom the sun revolves around Journey.
Based on the record, I really don’t believe that the various factions will ever settle for peace.
That’s because,unfortunately,for some fans Journey has become a religion.
It’s not about opinions anymore,it is dogma.Fans don’t have debates,they are starting a jihad.

I see three sides that will forever be in conflict:
The fans who think Steve Perry IS Journey.Period.
Then the fans who think that Steve Augeri saved Journey and gave them another decade of music and concerts.
Now there’s a new division: the fans that think Jeff Scott Soto is the one who will put Journey up on the pedestal again.
So now the *war* is even more intense.
If we take a step back and we try to draw an objective line,we could realize that all these years the fans fought about the lead singers.Journey WAS and IS the Singer.
This war will never stop,because people never change.EVER.Only times change.

People can type all kinds of stuff on a Message Board,no matter which one it is.
Some have realistic opinions,some are just going with the flow and say what the crowd says,some are gullible,and some are in it just for the fun.

I agree with some of what you said, John. It's really not important to me to unite Journey fans. People are different, and that's what makes things interesting! However, I don't like the blatant name-calling and personal insult-hurling that often happens here when someone has an opposing/unpopular viewpoint. That goes way beyond the idea of honest discussion about Journey. I know you don't like the "wiggle" threads. What makes those threads any worse than the ones here that show women's breasts, etc? I just skip over the threads that annoy me, or stop reading when they start going south. You say that you don't like BT and you're glad to not be a member there anymore, but every post I read of yours here talks about BT. Maybe I'm just not reading enough of your posts.

As I said above, I wasn't expecting that you would call anyone names. I've never read a post where you have done that. There are some people here who really seem to take great joy in knocking other fans down, and that's what I don't like. I stand corrected about you always bringing up BT in your posts. It must be that those posts jump out at me or something. I agree that it's the same few people bumping up the "let's here it for..." threads on BT right now. Hi Transy...

I think you forgot the newest group: The fans who think that Steve Perry IS Journey, but think that JSS is finally the hope for a new re-energized Journey that is capable of being revelent in the music industry once again (kind of a merging of your groups 1 & 3). I personally believe that it is this group that mostly comprises this board currently. I am a die-hard Perry LOON, but I also recognize that my dreams for a SP Journey will not happen. I can kinda understand how some of the BT'ers are feeling about 'their guy', and I'd be willing to bet even their harshest critics could relate to that too, if they were really honest with themselves.

However, a genuine effort was made, and was essentially rejected (despite what some think and say), so I think what we need now is simply to try to co-exist. I have my own feelings about why the apology/uniting the boards occurred, but it doesn't really matter what I think. If you want to be part of that forum, go for it. If you want to hang here, that's great. And if you want to be a part of both of those, that's okay too. They are two different entities with two totally different personalities.

Journey has been making music for about 30 years, and there's no reason we can't have more than one forum to accomodate the diverse interests of their fans. Andrew's okay with that, the mods at BT should be too. Let's just move on and look forward to the Journey ahead...

Journey wants the fan base united. It brings in more money If Augeri fans are still pissed, they might not go to concerts. If Perry fans are still pissed, they might not go to concerts. It all comes down to that. There is never going to be a united fanbase. If they wanted untiy, they should have waited for Perry or retired. I'm not saying that's what they SHOULD have done, I'm saying if they wanted ONE fan base , that's what they would have had to do. There is nothing that will reunite the fan base after all that has happened, so they need to give that one up and be happy with what they have left.

Journey's official site is now moving argumentative posts to the "new" BT area of the forum. Anybody know what will be posted on the new area of the forum? Positive wiggle threads? JSS attire threads? Is that what musicians of Journey's calibur want as a reflection of the band? They want new people to come there, see no dissention and assume all is right in Journeydom? Looks to me like they are more concerned about that than having an informative site where people come to talk about music and possibly get REAL news from a band member or two once in a while. The band members avoid their own site like the plague.

If they send all the posts about Perry, the co-writer of all their hits, to the PT back room, then they better damn well send "Mr. Awesome" there, too.

Nobody here is curing cancer, ending world hunger, or bringing our troops home from Iraq! These boards are meant to be light-hearted and an escape from the real world, and nothing more than that! If you're taking things more seriously, it may be time for a new hobby! I can't say that I'm all that surprised about the mods response to Dean's apology. I've been saying for years that most of that group thinks their place in this world is FAR more significant than it will ever be. Their response simply affirmed what I've always believed! I think instead of calling a "truce" next time, we should just have members of BT stay on their boards, and we'll stay on our boards! Honestly, after being on both boards, I don't know why members on this site would ever want to post on BT, with the way that site is currently operated. I also don't know why member of BT would ever want to post here. If we stay out of each other's way, Andrew can have some peace and quiet in his life and not be forced into referee mode! Okay...my rant is over (for now!)

Things are so simple it's almost ridiculous.

I don't believe in unanimity,that would be really boring.It's diversity that makes things interesting.
But I hate extremism and I believe both in Journey's legacy with Perry and in their rights to move on with someone better than Augeri.

I truly wish Journey would be relevant in the industry again.I hope it's not too late.

I don't think the Journey fan base will ever be united cos some folk are Perry fans, some love Augeri and some are right keen on Jeff. You can't get them all to agree.

Best thing they can do is tolerate each other

Fans liking each other on message boards has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not an Augeri fan continues to go to a Journey concert. Most of these people have already made up their mind, because of the way the entire situation has been handled, and all of us kissing and making up isn't going to change a thing! As far as the Perry fandom...Perry has been apart from Journey for 10 long years, so I'm quite sure Perry fans aren't really affecting Journey's bottom line too much, at this point.
