Have to agree JR... mentally fought against it for a while.... but , singing aside, beginning to believe that Mr Augeri is not quite the "sugar coateds" nice guy we all once thought he was!!

Think he was just a very good singer in a rock and roll band who did some great material e.g. signs of life. shame everyone wants to bury his reputation.

JR...

That's pretty compelling stuff. Honestly, I don't know how anyone who calls themselves an Augeri fan could listen to that and not walk away shaking their head, as I did! I'm certainly not faulting the guy, because I don't think it's his fault his voice is shot. That said, there is NO possible way anyone could listen to that and not come away thinking the guy's voice is toast! Singing Perry songs will do that to most accomplished singers! I'd love to hear three versions of Faithfully, if you have them!!!! Thanks for posting those!

Agreed, no one can come close to Perry, voice incredible beyond words.

But for me, JSS's voice is just an incredible. JMHO.

I agree. And, Journey with JSS has an 'energy' live that reminds me of the Perry days. :D

Thanks! I'm glad that someone understands. Until the day that someone else comes along, who I think is as good as or better, I'll string along with Perry.

Is that what you'll be saying about Jeff in a couple years?

Try to look at the entire picture...every time Journey plays a gig and one of Perry's co-written songs, it shows that no singer before or since can compare to him. He has nothing to prove to you, me or anybody else. Augeri and Soto on the other hand, had (and have) much to prove as far as what their legacy in Journey will be. Next time you want to throw out an insult, try throwing it at the lipper instead.

Well, he certainly doesn't have to prove anything to us, but I for one would certainly love to see him do it!!!!! I don't think that was meant to be an insult to SP, just stating a fact that I believe Steve Perry himself would agree to. And that's okay, we all know he doesn't have the range he once had, but I'm sure he could still knock us out with his performance anyway!!!! I'm ready, anyone else...? 8)

I doubt that Perry would agree to that, Donna. He may sing on a different level with his more mature, mellow voice and it just might sound better than ever. We don't know. Some of his friends have stated that he is better than ever. If people have an opinion, it should be stated as an opinion, not as a fact.

I love Steve Perry as much as anyone, but to think that he still has the ability to sing like he did 25 years ago is probably not realistic!! It's not an insult, just physiology. What friends have said he's better than ever?? I haven't read or heard that, but I'd sure like to. So if you've got a link to that (not just someone saying how great he sounds, but that he can now sing better than he ever could before) I'd love to hear it. Otherwise, please don't scold me for sharing my views on the subject. I haven't done that to you, and I'd appreciate the same from you.

I don't have a version of Jeff singing Faithfully. Except for 1 or 2 shows, Deen has sang it this tour. I'll put up a version of Deen doing it. He has a beautiful voice. It's interesting to compare these singers like this. If anyone has Jeff singing it, maybe they would put it up.

I don't have a link to it Donna but Uncle Joe Benson said Perry's singing voice is as good now as it was in the 80s. That's not saying better than ever before tho.

Uncle Joe stated that Perry sounds as good as he did "in the mid 80's" Uncle Joe is a pretty well respected guy who has, at times, been accused of being pretty easy on his interviewees. Regardless, Perry has been in a recording studio, per Uncle Joe. He went on to say that he was "no more than 8 feet away" and Perry was absolutely amazing. Steve perry's voice might change, but that's NEVER what made him the ARTIST he is. It's ALWAYS been about his delivery. That is, the way he was able to sing every line of every song in an emotive way that seemed to transcend music, while combining passion and song in a way no other has done before or since. Period.

Well here's what I think. On the David Pack backing vocals, his voice is amazing & that was recorded in late 04, I think. When he did the Laidlaw song, his voice sounded like it did back in the 70s. That was in 99. There are new vocals added to Street Talk (remastered). They were recorded this year. So he can still sing in the studio. I'd love to hear him sing live tho.

Thanks!!! I read your response after mine posted. I have never doubted he was still amazing!!! NEVER!!! My thing is that trying to compare Steve Perry of today with Steve Perry of 1981 might not be realistic. I'm saying it's not fair to HIM to make those comparisons! It seems like UJB knows him pretty well, and he must be well-respected by SP since he's given him numerous interviews, right? I'm certainly not criticizing 'the Voice', I love him as much as you guys... but where can I find these quotes by Uncle Joe, I'd like to read them. Thanks! I also firmly believe that at his worst, I'd still rather have him with Journey than anyone else!!! 8)
