Well hey...listening to it "forward", I thought it was:

"Callin', callin', callin'...tears fallin'..."

But hearing "proof" like this TOTALLY shut me up! LOL

Journey also did this on one of the pre-Perry albums.

OK:

"Backward-Masking" is defined as something you would hear if you played a certain part of a recording "backwards"...like if TBF was on an LP...you would take the beginning part of where it "ended" (before the "rocking" part of the song) and manipulate the turntable in "reverse" with your fingers, so it would play back to the "beginning"...LedZep was famous for doing this....you would hear "hidden messages" within the song.

In this particular thing, I hear:

"Meeeeeeeeeeeessssssssaggggggggeeeee.....ooooof....oooooof......loooooooooooovvvvvvvveeeeeeeeee...."

What's the backwards "message" supposed to be saying? I'm not hearing anything out of the ordinary.

Nora, are you saying that the sort of eerie sound at the beginning of MOL is MOL played backwards?

There was more than just Led Zeppelin who were accused of backmasking. Styx, AC/DC, Rush, The Eagles, Queen, etc., were all accused of it. For the most part, they are just backwards parts of songs that just happen to sound like something else when played forwards. The others, like one by Pink Floyd, are ones they did purposely to poke fun at those who were on a crusade against rock music.

Heck, even the Christian group Petra did one of those purposely before their song "Judas' Kiss" because these people were just on a witch hunt.

"Backward" masking as the nuts claim is not legit.
1. It was started as a marketing/artisting tool.
2. So numb nut evangelist Dave Wilkerson blew it out of proportion, accusing those with it on their records of being demonically inspired/posessed.
3. The theory that our auditory system and brain can hear something buried in the mix, in reverse, and then decipher it, and subconsciously control our minds without our knowledge has been proven false by many Drs/universities. We are linear beings. We start everything at A and end up at B. We do not hear in reverse. Many times these demonic records in question, like Led Zep for instance, are not plain even in reverse. Queen, Styx, KISS are not obvious in reverse either. So how can you hear it forward? You can't. In all of the demonically inspired musical passages said to contain masking, the listener must be told what to hear, or else they hear nothing, or something completely different.
4. I know that there are good and evil forces at work in the world. Look at the news. I know that there are in music. It is appearant in the lifestyles of those on stage.

Well, I'll clarify...

The clip in the link is the intro to Message of Love REVERSED. What you hear on the album is "message... of... love" backward. I simply reversed it so that you can hear the true words. (yes that's my site)

Thank you. I've wondered about that ever since I first heard the song.

Sarah, were you the first to discover this? I wonder why SP wanted to do it backwards...dang, too late for that question on the Q&A.

When I was in Junior high music class our teacher played the Beatles song with the message, "Paul is Dead" and then showed us all the clues in the albums. The idea was that Paul had been killed and they found a doppleganger that took Paul's place. The teacher showed us the album cover where Paul is the only one barefoot (a clue to show he is different...the song with the lyrics, "come together right now over me" , "hair down to his knees" means Paul is buried..etc. We sure learned a lot in that class - like my math teacher who talked about his car all the time!

Don't feel bad Nora. I once read at BackTalk that someone thought he was saying, "I love you, Sherrie".

You're soooo lucky that you got a cool teacher. Mine yelled at us and threw erasers at our foreheads. She didn't last long. lol

Once, we were talking before class started and she walked in and screamed, "STOP!!!" and in the silence that followed I said, "Hammer Time". (M.C. Hammer was huuuge then lol) I was popular for the rest of the day lol

Oh, I doubt I'm the first to discover it but I'm the first one I know of who actually put it back into its "real" version. I knew the intro sounded like reverse voices but I only assumed he was singing "message of love" until I actually edited it.

He probably just wanted to do it because it sounds like normal "aaahhhh" vocals but it's a seekrit message... of love?

Anyone who's seen this song performed live, how do they do this part of the intro?

Sarah, I think they said that Perry's vocals are used for the beginning. It was recently mentioned here - in some thread.
Jeremey, it was the 70s in the Midwest...I think everybody was stoned then (like the movie "Dazed & Confused") -- I never had homework!!

Really? Interesting considering they cut him out of the Faithfully video.

It's hard to tell in bootlegs because most of them aren't very pristine in quality, but it sounds like Augeri to me.

Which is interesting because according to Herbie the band aren't allowed to re-record any songs which originally featured Perry on vocals. Maybe short 5 second intros don't count?

Here's an example from 1999 graciously provided by Susie (JourneyRox)

Here's an example from 2001

Both clips are of the intro only and have been reversed meaning you'll hear the words "Meesssage Ooof Loooove" sung instead of "EEEUUUOOOOO AHHHHH CHEEEEESAAAAMEEAAAA"

I'm pretty sure somebody said in another thread that Jeff said it was the original Perry intro used for the live MOL performance.

I thought everyone knew this already. It is no secret that Journey has long dabbled in the occult and satanism. Common knowledge I thought.
