Jeff, I was reading Jonathan Cain's interview and he said you were without monitors for a period in the beginning. Did he just mean without in ears or without monitors period??? THAT would suck and would explain the first few gigs (and recordings) being rough for sure.
Which in ears and phones are you using now? I'd be curious to now what your mix is setup like in your head.

I think he meant that the band has such a loud "stage volume" that Jeff couldn't hear his lead vox in the floor monitors very well nor could he hear a "proper mix" from the entire band.

The in-ears corrected that.

I'd be surprised if their stage volume was very loud, especially with Deen's big plexi shields. It may be more that Jeff couldn't hear the music.

Perhaps you are right, but JC did say:

Those plexi-shields are overrated. My band didnt think it did much good, although in fairness we do play clubs, not halls or arenas.

True, but everyone is using in-ears, so there's no need for loud stage volume, so JC could be speaking of the lack thereof...Plus, I must confess that when I spoke with Alan Rosen at Bananas at Large about some advice on dialing in our IEM mix, Alan did stress that onstage, you could have a low conversation and still be heard over Journey's amps.

that COULD be that the volume they use is lower than others. I would expect Ygwie's band to be louder than Journey. I could be wrong.
