Here are a few Journey facts that I will NEVER understand. If any of you can enlighten me PLEASE do. Also feel free to add.

3. How Steve Perry could EVER think that he was'nt part of the band.

2. How people could say that Raised On Radio was basically just another Steve Perry solo album. It had rockers, mid tempo songs and ballads. It maybe was'nt as good as some of Journeys past efforts,but PLEASE enlighten me as to how it was a Perry solo effort. Because... if Raised On Radio was just an extension of Steve Perry solo how could my #1 occur.

**** My real question is how on earth could Steve Perry EVER do a rock/pop album and NOT sound like Journey??????????

What's the difference between Feeling That Way/Anytime, Where Were You, Anyway You Want It, Seperate Ways, Girl Cant Help It, Be Good To Yourself, Strung Out , You Better Wait & Tuesday Heartbreak.

IMO because his constant struggle for control alienated him from the other guys.

Maybe it was the chorus of Perrys in every song?

I don't know the answer to that one. Maybe they just saw the success of that album as success they could have had as a band? Street Talk is MUCH better than ROR.

No. The reason was probably because they could party like rock stars in their own time and he could not. #1 reason was he had to protect his voice from smoke, alcohol, germy people and yucky air. Therefore the bonding time wasn't there. #2 Singing is emotional and took it all out of him night after night-look at the schedules! probably had to give whatever he had left to his personal relationships ie. Sherrie.

I know I'll get slammed for saying this & called a loon, but I think that statement was misunderstood. I think Perry may have been talking about the beginning. Herbie shoved Perry on the band & they didn't want him there. Later on, I think there were many resentments that formed b/c Perry wanted to do some ballads & Neal wanted to rock more. Remember the quote about Neal laughing at Perry when he was recording Open Arms? Also, to perform as much as he did, Perry had to refrain from talking a lot of the time. I think that set him apart. Then, Perry was trying to maintain his relationship w/Sherrie, who I have heard was possessive, & by spending his time w/her while on the road, it again created a rift.

It was definitely a change in direction from earlier Journey albums so I think some people consider it a more "pop" album than others. I think it's very different from Perry's solo albums, but I guess some don't.

I agree that Perry could never sing & have it not sound like Journey. To this day, many people think Oh Sherrie was a Journey song. It's hard when someone has such an easily identifiable voice to do something else & not sound like the band. One example that comes to mind is Peter Cetera. His solo album sounded so much like Chicago & it was b/c of that voice.

See what I wrote above. The difference is in the guitar playing & drums. But the voice is the common theme & so it's hard to differentiate. That's my thought anyway.

I agree. There might have been another 5 minutes explaining it that VH-1 cut. Who knows.
But I don't believe he would say something like that without explaining what he was talking about.
Come on, you've heard this guy's interviews his whole career...when has he ever just said one thing and stopped?
The only one that loves to hear himself talk more that Steve Perry is Jon Cain.

And there ya go. I completely agree Suz. The only thing I would add is that Neal saying ST sounded too much like a Journey album was just his way of rationalizing the difference between his solo albums and Steve's.(not a slam, just an opinion) I really don't think ST sounded like a Journey album except for the unmistakable voice. He didn't even sing the songs with the same vocal quality that he did Journey albums, but he was still Steve Perry. FTLOSM was a complete departure too, but still some people called it an extention of ROR and then some called TBF an extention of FTLOSM. I don't hear any similarities in any of Steve's solo work with his Journey work except for his voice.

I totally agree with you bluejeangirl. I always thought, from the second I heard him say that he never felt that he was part of the band, that there was some explanation to the statement that was edited out. Otherwise, that statement just makes no sense to me.

Steve Perry himself said ROR was invluenced by Street Talk...since that was the last album he did. In addition, he produced the album and had a LOT of control.

It's very simple...NO other outside Journey solo/side project put Journey on hold - except Stree Talk.

Why does Steve Perry have to do a pop album? Why could he not explore his influences and give us something a bit deeper then what he was already giving us in Journey?

Point is, Steve Perry solo could never match what Journey did together. I think there is probably a reason why he wanted to record "Faithfully" on a solo album - he can not equal that level of songwriting on his own - and he knows it.

So, instead of trying to do that, why couldn't he give us more "Don't Tell Me Why You're Leavin'" and defined his solo sound as a separate sound from Journey? Why couldn't he point to his roots and his influences and say, "See, this is who I am." Instead, all he did was point to Journey and say, "See, this is all I'll ever be."
