That's incredible!!! There are no words for what SP brought to this group!!!

Jon Cain is actually breaking a sweat!

I wonder if we can get Neal to wear that headband in Leesburg this May...?

Pure fucking talent.

If they released THAT as their SW video, like Knox mentioned in another thread, they would probably be taken more seriously and/or be less made fun of.

Listen to this again. I can hear drum skipping (on purpose), and Neal throws in a little wiggle or two on the first solo.

True dat. The band was magic live and should have stuck with live vids.

I've got that video and the song just sounds better to me the way they played it that first time than it did later for some reason. I'm not sure what the exact difference is though.

I just love the small differences in Perry's phrasing in some of the words, and that POWER note he hits when he says gets to "in VAIIIIIIIIIN"........that shit is magical......

Rock on,
Eric

It was magical, but what the Hell's up with the costumes?

Perry looked ok, but Neal is wearing a Gas station attendants uniform with the sleeves lopped off; Friga looks like a fuckin bumble bee, and Ross is wearing yellow fishing waders. Goddamned guys, what were you thinking?

I heard Seperate ways even prior to this show so this was not the first time it was performed
We were in Champaign ILL at the end of the Escape tour and Perry said they just wrote the song a week ago
Im sure that was a staged phrase but when I heard it I was blown out of the sky,

oh, yeah...that is so much better than the video. Why can't SP just gather up some more of these gems & release them as GH DVD II ???? I can't stand the lousy broken up reception & the tiny screen on my computer & now we have a big screen t.v. that is so much better -- I want more DVDs!!! please SP! :) :)

I have the boot of this version and, in my opinion, it's better than the way it was performed on the "Frontiers" tour. Perry's voice sounded much better here than it did during that tour also.

I immediately saw tha too. You can pinpoint a specific 3 month period, where his voice does get heavier, lower....

Yeah, I love his voice on the "Frontiers" album. That's my favorite Perry vocal performance. That extra bit of grit in the voice gave tunes like "Chain Reaction" and "Edge of the Blade" the feel that they needed. However, it hurt him some singing those older tunes live.

I remember Perry saying, it's a more angular, not angry album. I wonder he intentionally husked up his pipes for Frontiers?

If I'm not mistaken, I think I remember him being quoted as saying that they purposely did some or all of the vocal takes in the morning, before his voice had a chance to warm up. The gritty sound could certainly be attributed to that, if it's true.

I read somewhere that he said he made a conscious effort to change his voice for some of the later albums. Now...whether that's true or he was just trying to cover himself due to his possible loss of range is anybody's guess.

You are right,he was recording vocal tracks before 11 a.m.He refered to his voice as being "gruff" in the morning and sounding like he wanted to for Frontiers.

As for this change being deliberate or not...well,here's the quote:"It was a very conscious decision on my part. I think that the first thing that someone can get tired of in a band is the vocals. If you don’t try to change a bit that sound can get tiring; I was anxious to try and use my lower range more. I have greater strength in my overall presentation."(Steve Perry - 1983)

I know...I read it in your book.

I, for one, could NEVER grow tired of his vocals...at any range!! 8)

Whoa. Wait a minute. If that is true, and I am not saying it isn't, how the Hell did he pull it off for the Frontiers tour? Did he wake up at 800PM, as to have that gruff sound? Being that Infinity, Evolution, Departure, and Escape tunes were all in the setlist, he still had to go high for those?

Hmm.

Wouldn't that lend more credibility to his assertion that it was a deliberate decision to change things up? Did he sing the songs the same way in concert as he did in the album?
