WLW radio just named the new selections for the R n R HOF as Drudge did last night. I was surprised to learn that 600 musical experts make the selections. Who are these people and who are some of the groups they select ? Just nuts!

This is the way I see it. Journey has been pissed on and passed over many times for a variety of reasons. First, music came first. They weren't an "act." They didn't wear makeup, promote sex and drugs or have some other non-music related characteristic. They were all about music and music only. Their lyrics were seemingly "uncool" since they talked about life and its "journey" rather than sexual bliss, drug trances or being a "tough guy." They took a simple concept, making great music, and excelled at it. They combined harmonies, soaring vocals, and second to none songwriting with musicianship and became the most popular band in the U.S. For THAT, they were hated and dismissed as "corporate rock." To the naysayers I say "F#ck You" and to the RnR HOF I say "Please keep Journey OUT." Some of the acts that HAVE been inducted make your "shrine" more reminiscent of a rehab center for shitty music than what I assume it is actually intended for. Journey not being there is not in the least bit a slight. That place has long been a joke.

Here's the list for this year. I agree with some of the list, but for some of these others to be there before Journey is unbelievable. Actually none of these should be there before Journey, it's just that I agree they belong there.
I agree with what saint John said, and the HOF is a joke.

Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (Kid Creole, Cowboy, Grandmaster Flash, Melle Mel, Mr. Ness, Raheim)

R.E.M. (Bill Berry, Peter Buck, Mike Mills, Michael Stipe)

The Ronettes (Estelle Bennett, Ronnie Spector, Nedra Talley)

Patti Smith

Van Halen (Michael Anthony, Sammy Hagar, Alex Van Halen, Eddie Van Halen, David Lee Roth)

Exactly!!!

I wonder just what their definition of Rock 'n Roll is. I know the standard line has something to do with their contribution to the genre, but what do they consider a contribution?

RnR Hall of Fame is a cheap stunt dreamt up by the Cleveland City Fathers to boost tourism. Cleveland doesn't exactly have a legitimate claim to rock mecca. Memphis, NY, London-maybe... ,but...= Cleveland? Who are the Turtles? they are in, Journey is not....if you aren't a blue hair stopping off in your RV or a acne ravaged teen on a field trip...forget about it, its not worth even visiting imo. fuggeddaboutit~~

While I'm a little late in this discussion. The fact that f**kin' U2 was inducted BEFORE VH CLEARLY shows that the 600 person panal all have their collective heads up each ohter's ares'. Van Halen formed in 1974 - U2 in 1976...WTF is that about.

That said, the years 1986-1996 were good years for 'classic' acts to get inducted - groups that REALLY made an impact. The years 1997-2000 were hit or miss. 2001-2005 were just "oh, look another RNR HOF ceremony (save for Bob Seger)

Click here and see for yourself: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inductees_ ... ll_of_Fame

As for the comment about Cleveland not having any claim to rock mecca - Akron DJ Alan Freed, while not the first to play rock and roll on the radio, but is credited for coining and popularizing the term "Rock and Roll" to describe a style of music, while working for WAKR in Akron. He was a promoter as welll. If that doesn't somehow give Cleveland a first shot - I don't know what will.

Truth be told the RNR HOF should be right next to the Delta Blues Museum, in Clarksdale, Mississippi. It all came form the blues.

I agree...I'm not a big Seger fan and only really know a few tracks but I agree he deserves to be there.

I don't get the whole how did they get in before Journey, blah blah blah. Not everyone is a fan of Journey. I don't think there is any real standard followed, but rather some greased palms, favors, etc.... for each years' inductions.

The Sex Pistols, Blondie, Ramones, U2 have all made there mark, whether you like them or not. I think it is silly to knock the choices based on disdain for Journey being over looked or because you are simply not a fan. So many call the RnR HoF a joke, but I wonder if their tune would change if Journey were inducted.

It IS a joke.

And now they want to expand to let hip hop artists in.

This so-called HOF is very discriminatory towards AOR rock. Journey will have a very tough time ever getting in.

The same can be said for Alice Cooper and Kiss, who are hugely influential, sold tons of records and still tour arenas even today.

Deep Purple not in? They only have the most infuential guitar riff of all time with Smoke on the Water. Everyone who has ever picked up a guitar has played that one.

How about The Moody Blues? Yes? Neil Diamond?

It's not even that these bands aren't in. They aren't even nominated, while hip hop, country, and soul acts acts are getting elected.

If Rolling Stone magazine's band of pot smoking hippies doesn't deem you as acceptable, then there is no shot. A total farce that has nothing to do with what the record and ticket buying public have proven over the years to be acts worthy of enshrinement.

You're right. Last I checked, it was called the "Rock and Roll" Hall of Fame. With very few exceptions, hip hop is not rock and roll. If they're going to do that, then change it to the "Popular Music Hall of Fame".

Nice post, Lula, I agree 100%. I'm a Journey fan, sure they should be in. I'm a Styx fan, they should be in. I'm a Pat Benatar fan and I think she should be in too. The point of the HOF is INFLUENCE. Who did they influence, what did they change? I rarely hear a band say they were influenced by Journey or Styx for that matter. Pat is another story. She influence a wave a female artists much like Heart did. I thought it took Heart MUCH too long to get in.

Above all of those, I think Rush should be in. They have carried themselves for over thirty years with only one Top 40 hit, but a massive, almost cult like following and a lot of drumming influenced by Neil.

In the end, it's all subjective.

I don't agree with everything you said but you're absolutely right about Rush. I think it's the biggest travesty that they're not in there. They've influenced a ton of bands and not just in the progressive rock genre, but just in general. Heck, even a lot of the bands dating back to the grunge/alternative era were influenced by them.

Journey has a lot of influence, credited as being the first band to:

-Create the power ballad
-Consistently use the double-bass drum
-Have their own sponsor
-Have a video screen on stage
-Have their own video game

I'm positive there's more but I can't remember right off.

In terms of influence though, Boston deserves to be in way before Journey or many other bands. If it wasn't for Boston there would've been no melodic arena rock, or at least it would be a remarkably different scene, and that would've drastically affected music. Sure they only had one critically acclaimed album, but that one album alone practically defines classic rock within itself.

Once Boston gets in too, it's only a matter of time before it's Journey's time to shine.

Not to mention that one could argue that Perry, Schon and Smith are respectively in the "Top 10" for vocalists, guitarists and drummers of the last 25 or 30 years. How many bands can say THAT?

More like 600 elitist toss-pots :)

I'm suprised VH got the nod finally, considerign they are still igoring Toto, Journey, Foreigner, Chicago, Kiss, John Mellencamp...

Couldn't have said that better myself!

And just to add.............

Why does anyone care? Who needs the validation from these "toss-pots" anyway?

If you enjoy Journey, or any other band for that matter - what these assclowns think is irrelevant.

Journey will never get in anyway. "Corporate rock" is frowned upon by the Rolling Stone magazine elitists.

Out of that list, the only one I'd disagree with is Toto.

I'd disagree with Toto, but then again, they have a very unique and distinct sound unlike any other band. The progressive pop funk jazz blues soul they do is pretty original.
