If the New Journey has a hit single, it will sound like??

For Journey to have a hit single with loads of radio airplay, will it sound like classic Journey, or do you feel like the guys would have to throw in a modern touch to the song? Would it be a rocker or ballad? Either way, we hope we can hear the song on radio (at all) and say.."that's Journey!" My belief....I think it would sound like classic Journey and it would start a trend with bands wanting to return to the 80's type of melodic rock! Ok, I'm just having wishful thinking at this point, but go with it!

I would say something "DSB-ish". That song got all popular again in the last couple of years.

I don't think it would sound like classic Journey. It just couldn't without the Perry voice and creative input. I think it would sound damned good though. It would have the Journey touch. Jeff's voice, chemistry with them, and songwriting combined with Neal's and Jon's Journey experience would make it have what it takes to make people want to hear more from this Journey.

I'm sure it will need more cowbell!

It will never happen no matter what it sounds like
If With Your Love and Lifetime of Dreams could not make it to the radio nothing this JRNY will do will make it to the radio
Only if Perry sings will it make it to the radio
Thats The Fact Jack

As much as I'd LOVE to see a Perry/Journey reunion, I hope you're prediction is not right. I'm confident Jeff can make a difference. 8)

I believe you will hear a very melodic, moderate paced song with a catchy hook as a single. there is NO doubt in my mind they will have one, IF, Management promotes. Soto is so cocky, and deservedly so, and that is just what this band needs. it was rudderless. Soto is a power steering muthafucka!

And there you have it. :D If management promotes it. :?

Soto has had literally hundreds of songs without a hit in the U.S. (to the best of my knowledge). The Journey name would've given the much deserved exposure in the past. However, the music industry has changed and I just really can't see them charting. That's not to say they can't deliver a great album. They can. But for them to chart, I really think management would have to get creative....something I don't think they're capable of. They say they're behind the band, but I'd bet they'll promote them JUST enough to keep the tours successful and the money from Greatest Hits and the rest of the back catalog pouring in. I'll be buying the new album and doing my little part to get the word out, but I just don't see Journey charting with all of the shit on the radio today.

I should add, use Azoffs movie history and contacts, and get a soundtrack tune; make sure it is very good, and then people will check out the bands' new effort.

Soundtrack guys, soundtrack. Commit it to memory.

Management will, most likely, echo those sentiments.

Are you still thinking of suicide? Dude, it's that close minded thinking that has handicapped Journey for some time now.

They have Soto now. They can actually go somewhere.
Why play it conservative?

Well, I think it should sound like Believe In Me. Soto sings the hell out of it, and Neal, well, does his thing. I love this tune.

Personally, I'm not convinced that the 80's sound doesn't sell anymore. Look at the success of the band Hinder. Their song "Lips Of An Angel" is a big hit, and I could see the new JSS-Journey creating a killer rock ballad similar to that one. We all know they are capable.

What songs were big hits for Journey in the past?

Any Way You Want It
Don't Stop Believin'
Open Arms
Separate Ways
Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin'

Surely Journey could produce another hit or two. Just because the Augeri version of Journey didn't come up with one doesn't mean the JSS version of Journey can't. It's all about finding a catchy hook and a good riff, as it always has been. I think the mistake that a lot of 80's bands have made is trying to come up with a newer sound that doesn't fit them. If Hinder can sell the 80's sound successfully, so can Journey.

It's not just the song it's the band.....
Unless your U2 It'll be hard for a band that's been around for 30 years to break out again...
Teenagers n 20 somethings can relate to bands more there age...
Most of the people who bought the escape record when it was released probraley haven't bought more than 10 cds in 2006...
i'm one of the few journey fans that i grew up with that still follow them...
When was the last time ( classic ) radio played a new journey song from generations or arrival? I've never heard one even on sirius radio....

This would be a good thread for SOTO to chime in on....unless of course, he's not into speculating........

With some of the bitching that's gone on about some of his previous posts I'd be afraid to say anything about anything on any messageboard. Gee, I wonder why the band doesn't interact with it's fans more.

Jeff is definitely free to contribute his two cents worth. One thing I would like to know is, do the guys in the band, when writing material, do they sit back and jam on a few riffs seeing what they can come up with? Do they write lyrics first? Do they play different types of music (such as songs from other bands..modern bands or whatever) to get fresh ideas about their own music? You would think after 30 some odd years of playing and writing your own music, that you'd feel at some point that you've covered just about every inch of ground you could with your own style. Or maybe, that is just me and my limited creativity.

They could very easily come up with either a great up tempo melodic rocker or equally a big ballad, but its a complete waste of time releasing a single and expecting it to chart - who amongst us ever buys singles? Possibly tying them to a film score a la Aerosmith is probably the best way.

I would love to hear a combo of "Be Good To Yourself" and "Believe In Me" (they have a common ground, that's for sure),anyway I'd like a happy-pumping-fist kinda song, one that gets you to drive faster, jump outta your chair, etc.

JSS has power in his voice,so that would be a good presentation of the new singer ,at the same time with keeping the Journey sound as well. :)
