Starship starring Mickey Thomas

February 15, 2007
8:00 p.m.
Convention Hall

Mickey Thomas' voice propelled Starship through the decades of the 80s and 90s. With his soulful and compelling vocals, Mickey established himself as one of rock music's most recognizable stars. The show includes an expanded set list of multiplatinum hits of Jefferson Airplaine, Jefferson Starship and Starship!

Mickey made his mark in 1976 as lead vocalist on the mega-hit “FOOLED AROUND AND FELL IN LOVE” with The ELVIN BISHOP Band. In 1979, Mickey’s joined the JEFFERSON STARSHIP as lead vocalist, after the departure of Grace Slick and Marty Balin.

Backed by the power of MICKEY’S vocals, JEFFERSON STARSHIP immediately scored a #1 hit with “JANE”. With this new sound and powerful new vocals, the group was renamed STARSHIP and continued to record an amazing string of hits including “NO WAY OUT”, “WE BUILT THIS CITY”, “SARA”, and an Oscar Nomination for the #1 hit “NOTHING GONNA STOP US NOW" from the movie “Mannequin”. Other top hits included “FIND YOUR WAY BACK”, “STRANGER”, “LAYING IT ON THE LINE”, and “IT’S NOT OVER TILL IT’S OVER” which became Major League Baseball’s theme in 1987.

Moreover, every STARSHIP album released since 1979 has gone Gold, Platinum, or Multi-Platinum. MICKEY’S stellar voice and video charisma on STARSHIP’s video classics such as “WE BUILT THIS CITY” and “SARA” have become staples on MTV and VH1. Material covered in STARSHIP’s live performance ranges from MICKEY’S tenure with THE ELVIN BISHOP Band and STARSHIP, as well as songs from his two solo albums. :D

Hey Ed!

We opened for Mickey Thomas/Starship about 4 years ago, and he was in great shape and in great voice. He's spent the past 20 years trucking around the corn dog circuit, so I'm not sure how much passion is coming off the stage, but if you are a fan of Mickey and the songs, you won't be disappointed.

We'd still love to get to Pittsburgh. Isn't there another Journey tribute in Pittsburgh? I've talked with one of the guys from TEN, the Pearl Jam tribute up there (we share the same booking agent), but I think those guys are on the road more than us!!

Make the trip to Cleveland in a couple weeks!!

It is definitely a 'must see' concert! I've attended several of his concerts and he keeps it true to form and was very fan friendly. I had the pleasure of talking to him for quite some time before a concert a year ago or so and he was extremely kind. One of the few that has really impressed me....I ran into him a few months after that concert and he actually remembered my name.

Go and enjoy!

He opened for Styx and REO for a show this summer and I thought he was quite good! I would have liked to see him dig a little deeper in the catalog they did with him, but he sounded great!

Looks like Mickey still has what it takes:

I wish I could say the same for Steve Perry, but that remains a mystery.

Wow, great post. Love his voice.

What's Marty Balin doing these days? I always thought he and Perry were similar in their soulfulness.

Hi NIG!

Marty Balin actually lives very, very close to my neighborhood. At least once or twice a year he will put on a concert (usually at one of the beaches - where I've seen Mickey Thomas also) using the Jefferson Starship name. He sounds just as good as he did back in the day. He and Mickey Thomas have a knack for telling stories before each song...it kinda gives a little life to each piece of music.

Just make sure if you buy a ticket that it's "Starship with Mickey Thomas" and not Jefferson Starship. They have become two completely different acts with dramatically different setlists.

Jefferson Starship is:

Paul Kantner
Slick Aguilar
Diana Mangano
Chris Smith
Marty Balin (tours off and on with them)
Prairie Prince

Knowing about her famous drug habit, I'd be surprised if she's still alive.

Well, I googled Grace Slick. It seems that she has retired from singing, and is into painting now. Her once black hair is now completely white, from what I read in her bio on the Jefferson Airplane website.

Grace Slick did an interview with VH1 and said that she would never tour again and that there was nothing worse than seeing a 50 something aging, grey haired fat rocker on stage. She discussed her old drug habits and if I remember correctly, she is into painting and sells them for a living. She still looks like the Grace Slick I remember (with grey hair), but she was totally against anyone performing over the age of 50. Shame that.

Then I guess she is against a Perry comeback.

I remember her saying something like the only time she ever gets sick is if she's off drugs.

Well, that is interesting she says that. Mick Jagger, and other rockers who are over 50 still perform.

Not to rain on the parade, but I could never get into Grace once I heard what Mickey Thomas brought to Jefferson Starship. That guy's a great friggin' singer. The only thing that was tough to swallow were the two Starship albums with "We Built This City" and "Love Among the Cannibals". The stuff prior to that was great. But Grace... I just never 'got' her. Same with Balin. Just a different taste I guess.
I remember hearing somebody cut Mickey's face up in a bar fight or something. I was really bummed when I heard that.
