Journey mentioned on Howard Stern today

They were having a discussion of the 5 greatest guitar solos of all time according to "Guitar Magazine" A caller phoned in and mentioned the solo in Who's Cryin Now". Everyone in the studio had the same reaction - "Journey"? Stern asked the caller "What are you gay?"

Fred Norris said "It's an ok solo, but a sucky song...." Robin agreed.

Stern then just complimented Neal Schon as a great guitar player and the the rest agreed, but because he played in Santana, but later got stuck with Journey and Steve Perry.

This type of thought is EXACTLY why Journey will never be in that shitty Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. So many Rolling Stone magazine types only give credit to the Led Zep's, The Who, Santana, Cream, and the bands that came in or just after the Woodstock era. Journey are looked down upon by that crowd. Very few exceptions to that in the voting we have seen.

Not my feelings of course, but it proves my point on all the HOF talk.

When push comes to shove I've heard him say they are ok. But they were being compared in this case to bands like Hendrix, Allman Brothers, Zeppelin and the others I've mentioned. You know? The kind of bands the RnR HOF deems "worthy" and "important".

That's why it's a joke. I don't know why anyone cares about it. It's a glorified Hard Rock Cafe.

They came back and actually played the solo and they all kind of liked it, so Neal did score some points. Fred Norris felt that Schon has done better solos on other Journey songs though.

That solo is perfect for that song. By "better" I guess he means more rocking. Neal has tons.

I love the first solo in "Stone in Love" and the ending solo is great also, though certainly different than the first one.

I love the contrasting solos in Mother, Father. Makes the whole song to me.

There's a six and a half minute version of The Party's Over (in Japan) where Neal just shreds for like the last 3 minutes. It's one of my favorites. Anyone else heard it?

Howard pretty much makes fun or insults everyone, doesn't he? It's part of his schtick. That being said, I *HATE* hearing things like this about Journey. AR is right - they'll never get the credit they deserve, unfortunately.

I've never considered it a solo. It's more of an outro in the vein of Steve Lukather's outro in Roseanne. Outro's take songs to another level and then typically fade. Solo's are really more of a punctuation mark somewhere in the middle of a song.

I think the WCN outro is so memorable because it indeed takes the song to another level. Also, it has that Neal Schon signature - contrasting riffs - a riff that soars and then another that just reaches into your chest and tears out your soul.

Excellent observations. That's what I wanted to say but just couldn't put into words. I've never considered it a "solo," either. I could listen to him continue that outro for hours. Very melodic and catchy with a perfect tempo. Fits the song perfectly.

It's both...It's a solo that is being used as an outro.

Howard must still be pissed that Perry once called him "Big Bird". He does kinda look like it.

I went out to eat last night with my girl. We are sitting there eating where out of nowhere, DSB comes on the radio. All of a sudden, my water tasted better, my food tasted excellent, and the conversations were more exciting to me. The waitress came over to see how everything was. I asked her.. "Do you like Journey? Great song huh?" She looked at me with a blank stare and said. "No, I'm sorry." Bitch ruined my dinner after that. She got no tip from me but the girlfriend put some down after I pleaded not to.

I hear that. At least Perry is/was very talented at one time. Something I can't say about Stern. He's become rich, THAT is for sure, but it's mainly because there are people with small enough brains to laugh at the same repetitive garbage he's been spewing for years.

Just because he ripped on Journey doesn't mean anyone got to hate on him. I am a Stern fan myself. I have Sirrus at work and listen to him every morning. Some of the shit he does you can't help but bust out in a laugh. He said multiple times though Journey is alright. Atleast he didn't rip them like most of the crew rips on other bands. Atleast the caller had some good sense to call in for a Journey song.

I still find Stern much less repetetive than any morning zoo or other local DJ's that I have heard.

The show is better on satellite than it had been the past few years on regular radio.

And yes I have a brain.

Let me clarify AR....that was NOT a shot at you or anyone in particular, rather a general statement. He HAS made me laugh a couple of times too. I just can't stand the same porno, midget shit over and over. For the record, I mainly listen to sports radio when it comes to "talk shows." Mike and Mike in the morning are outstanding.

Frankly, you are right, and it pisses me off that my favorite radio which I carry 3 subscriptions to have paid this asshole a whopping 20 million dollar bonus.Even Ozzy made fun of the ROR HOF even said he would never be there until he made it.All Stern does is belittle people and Robin gets on and laughs in the mic and agrees with everything the guy says. All in all glad I don't depend on Howard to tell me who is a great rock band or even to listen to.I'll stay with the classic channel and Buzzsaw for that!

Ozzy would still belittle that HOF, but Sharon justs ups his medication and forces him to do her evil bidding. She's a witch.

I used to be a Stern FANATIC and advocate, but I lost interest especially after his divorce.
The thing that made him appealing to me was that he was kind of an everyman.
In my opinion,he became a pompous ass and uninteresting.
I will say he gave me a lot of laughs for a lot of years.
There were quite a few times when I had a hard time driving because I had tears in my eyes.
I have XM and really like Opie and Anthony and Ron and Fez.
Funny, I used to listen to both of them when they were on in DC.

I know Stern and Bubba (who is UNLISTENABLE) bust on O&A and R&F,and calls them both a rip off,
but they are honestly very different. They are night and day.Plus Jim Norton is hysterical.
I really like Ron and Fez, a lot. They are funny as hell.

Maybe so but wouldn't you like her on your side to get a 20 million dollar contract?
