From Jonathan Cain

He sent out a message on Myspace:

"In its first week at radio Jonathan Cain's remake of the Journey song
Faithfully was the most added song to radio this week as reported by FMQB.

This version of his Diamond Awardwinning song is a stunning duet with rising country star Mica Roberts. Mica is currently on tour with country great Toby Keith and has performed with Faith Hill and Willie Nelson.

When asked about the remake of Faithfully Jonathan said "I always wanted to try Faithfully as a duet.
It's challenging to reinvent a classic, but it's definitely a song meant for two people. I wrote the song about that, really."

So why didn't he think to do this with Jeff and Journey???

Hmmm...
probably has something to do with some of the strangle-holds
Perry still has on the band on what they can and cannot re-record.
What a shame...
This "duet" coulda been the perfect way to introduce the
world to Journey's new frontman.
But then again, maybe it would be bad form and kinda lazy
to do it with a classic like Faithfully.
Does make you wonder though.

I'm sure it's what you said.None of the classic songs that were written during SP's time in the band can be re-recorded and released under the name Journey.
At least that's what I remember being said.

Must be a signed written agreement somewhere in a vault.

Though I think it's pretty......
To damn slow, Faithfully in it's original
tempo was perfect!
Bring two players two the game that
sing it in the stride it was intended as
and I'm with ya Seesta! :D

Thanks for the listen Shania.

The band shouldn't remake anything done by Perry. First and foremost, it's just not gonna be as good. Second, the only way to move, or attempt to move, out of Perry's shadow is to move forward and not backwards. They say they want to move forward yet seem to live in the past. That version was terrible. Slow and uninspired. Write a NEW ballad.

That was HORRENDOUS!!!!! As I've said in the past, don't fix what isn't broken!!!!!!! I've always thought "Faithfully" was the best ballad, EVER recorded by a rock band, and that killed it for me. That rendition was just plain, AWFUL! I guess it just goes to show you that the voice singing the music is a bit more significant than many Perry detracters believe it is!!!!

Well said. If anything, remake a song that WASN'T a hit. A signature song like that only showcases how much this band misses Steve Perry. I know Jon has rights to the song, but remaking a masterpiece isn't a good idea....especially when your voice is mediocre at best.

I agree. I didn't like it at all.

Jon shouldn't have done this. IMO the poor performance cheapens and bastardizes the song and does nothing at all to promote Journey. If anyone from the band was going to do a duet version of the song it should have been Jeff with Kelly Clarkson. They could do it justice and it would have introduced the public to the new Journey frontman with a song that is unmistakeably Journey.

But it's Jonathan Cain covering it for his own purposes, a solo record.

he wasn;t doing it for Journey.

I know Joe, it just sort of smacks of conflict of interest to me. If he'd chosen another of his Journey ballads that isn't so immediately associated with Journey it probably would have sounded just as bad but it wouldn't have been as insulting.

Insulting?

He remade a song he wrote.

I actually agree with 13 on this point. As horrendous as I think it was and is, if Jon wants to re-record this song and turn it into something it wasn't, that's his right. Hell, he wrote the damn song. Outside of hardcore Journey fans like us, it's NEVER going to be heard by anyone (thank god, for that)! I just didn't think it sounded, even halfway decent. It was every bit as bad as Jonathan Cain's solo version of the song. Someone should tell Mr. Cain that he's a keyboardist, for a reason!!!!

I know. I didn't say my reaction was logical. It's just the way it hit me. Purely emotional I guess. :?

Personally, I don't care for the harmony parts or the feel of the song. It sounds like a Muzak version, and Jon's harmony parts don't seem to flow with the song at all. I'd much rather listen to the classic Journey version of it as opposed to this. I don't care if you have two-, three-, or even five-part harmonies - hearing Steve Perry's voice is better than listening to a full choir.

Muzak

The word "Muzak" has, in popular usage, broken free from its corporate parent and become a catchall generic term (often pejoratively applied) for easy listening, MOR, or elevator music—or, indeed, for any type of banal, derivative, or repetitive music.

Should Bernie Taupin remake Elton John's "Levon" or "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and sing them (or other hits that he wrote for Elton) as a duet with someone?

Jon Cain's music needs to be marketed to the Christian genre. I don't know why he hasn't done that yet, but I believe he will after Journey. Even this version of Faithfully sounds like something from a marriage encounter weekend at a church. Nothing wrong with that, just so different than what we are used to hearing.

Perry elitism.

Without Friga Perry would've never cut the original vocal.

I don't think it's "Perry elitism" at all. If it was I wouldn't like the way Jeff sings it.

I can NOt wait to hear Alex(Chef Boy) Trahanapolis's rendition of Open Arms.

Alex helps plan the Friday thru Sunday before concert meals for the boyz. His speciality has always been a meatless sardine lasgana. Rumor has it, Neal would run through a brickwall for this greek/italian dish. He also serves a mean oriental cinnamon smelt apple tart with glaze sauce.

You all should know Alex's work from the Generation CD. He was a major player in the song Out Of Harms Way.

You can get a sneak peak(listen) today starting @ 4pmEST by logging on to Alex's website www.ifeedjourney.com

This baby ought to be good!!, very very melodic.

And without Perry, Cain would be working at a bar singing renditions of "Pianoman" for a living.
