Just having a discussion about this song elsewhere. A lot of people seem to like it. I think it sounds like a soulless bag of hot air. Of course I was much more vehement and colorful in my dislike for this song over there.

Many were trashing Open Arms and saying the band should do WCTNGF instead. Bad idea. I have been to shows where Open Arms is not played and everytime it becomes the total topic of conversation of fans on the way out of those venues.

Just wanted to bring this to the masses to hear some thoughts on this song. I realize I am in the minority. Sell me on it, or join me in agreement. Either way - let's hear about it.

I've always loved the song, definitely more than "Open Arms" and almost as much as "Faithfully". It's certainly better than most of the tripe on the "Raised on Radio" album, that's for sure. Love Perry's vocal on that one.

I really like that song too and especially the video. But sometimes I find it just too sad, although Perry's vocals are absolutely stunning.....especially near the end. ROR, IMO is some of Perry's best vocal work.

I really like it too. The beginning is kinda sappy but it gets better and the vocals start low and build to great effect.

I agree with that... It is really almost too sad. I think I've read it was supposed to be written about the fans. Knowing the way that tour ended - that gives it a melancholy kind of feel. It is an absolutely beautiful song musically.

It's one of those tunes that builds and builds into a monumental thing. Schon's guitar with Perry's vocals on this one especially are stellar. They both know when to give eachother their musical space. It makes a cinematic statement.

This song is full of emotion, and that is Steve Perry's signature. Granted, the emotion in "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever" has a sadness to it - which is unlike most of the other Perry-sang songs, which have a very optimistic and exhilarating emotion to them for the most part. But the vocals in this song are superb, the music is awesome, and the song reaches down into the depths of your soul and makes you FEEL something. Sure, he has a great voice - but so do a lot of other singers. Steve Perry takes it a step further and causes you to feel the emotion of the song. This is one of the reasons people are so passionate about Steve Perry - because he is an extremely passionate singer.

If you don't like feeling sad emotions, that's probably why you don't like this song.

P.S. - Maybe that is one of the reasons Steve Perry decided to quit touring? Maybe the raw emotions and passion every night just got too hard to deal with?

They were all metalheads and listened to nothing but Dio, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, etc. I even had to go see Journey by myself back in the mid-80's (for which I will always be thankful). The one thing that was different about that Journey concert in contrast to all the metal shows I had attended was that I felt emotion! When Steve Perry started singing, it sent chills up my spine. I will never forget that.
