Remastering the Journey Greatest Hits..

I know this is probably unlikely, but is there anyway Journey can remaster the Greatest hits album at JSS as lead singer? I know there are likely legal rights owned to the band and to Steve Perry, as well as other band members like Steve Smith. But redoing this album can put Journey out there to the public and introduce them as what they are today, not what they were years ago, which I know is great history. I think it would be interesting though to see a deal get made sometime and let JSS and the band record the classics again with the new lineup. But if they didn't do it with Augeri, they probably wouldn't with JSS. I don't know, I think it would be awesome.

Well, it's already been remastered.
If you mean reRECORD, then....uh... no. Why on earth would they do that?
You can't fuck with with what WAS. Those songs are part of Journey's history. Leave them that way.
To rerecord them with JSS would just send a message saying "Hey, we can't do anything else, so we're just going to cling to Open Arms and Lights for the rest of our careers." And that isn't true.
We know Jeff can sing those songs, but it's time to see what he can do in his own spotlight, not Perry's. They're two very different singers and what Perry did with Journey stands as it is. What Jeff will do will stand as JEFF'S.

Yeah, you know what I mean, reRecorded. I'm not saying mess with Journeys legacy. But it is what it is, and JSS is now in the band JOURNEY. If the Journey classics are Journeys past history and if you don't mess with their legacy and Steve Perry's, then why are they still riding tours with these songs for the past decade while Steve Perry has gone? Obviously, they are going to make new kickass music, so saying "we only depend on LIGHTS and DSB" is bogus. But, the world views Journey on those songs alone because they are a pastime band. Why not go the extra yard and release an all new package introducing the new album and oldies mixed into one for that matter? But I deff understand what you're saying.

2 things. Please edit "legacy" out.
"It is what it is" has this year become the most overused cliche in the world and I blame Bill Parcells.

Well, they re-recorded them with Augeri, except it was released as a "live" DVD.
I'm sure there will be a live DVD with JSS in a year or two that will have all the hits and such...I'd definitely buy one.

Asia actually did a greatest hits with John Payne after he succeeded John Wetton. He did put vocals to the hits from the first 3 albums. It didn't bother me a bit and I was interested to hear his versions. It's not like my first 3 Asia CD's mysteriously broke and I couldn't still listen to them.

Living in the past, in terms of ANY Journey album with Soto out front, will only cause comparisons and slow the band's future. They rode the Perry-era coattails for the last 8 years. If they truly are serious about moving forward, they need to make a name for themselves organically. That is, with fresh new in-your-fucking-face rock n' roll. Lastly, Azoff inc., which has been as useful as a midget in a slamdunk contest, needs to spend some fucking money and promote this band....something that hasn't been done since Herbie "hamburger" Herbert left.

I wanted the same thing down when Augeri was on board, wouldn't mind a JSS cd of this either. But don't see it happening. Maybe a live cd.-ERIC

I've given this a
lot of thought.
As much as I LOVE what Jeff's doing with Journey, and really enjoy his performances of the 'classics' (Deen's too), I think I would be opposed to re-recording the original songs. Maybe it's the 'loon' in me, but I believe that the Steve Perry 'legacy' (sorry, but true) should remain intact. My feeling is that a lot of Perry fans would be turned off by this, and it would ultimately hurt the band in the long run.
I'm ready to hear new, original stuff outta these 5 guys!!! Starting in Virginia this May!!!

Not opposed to the idea of rerecording previous songs, as I always was in favor of that w/ Augie.
That said, I'll take a NEW album and a live album of the subsequent tour or a live album culminating a few different tours w/ JSS like GHL was.

The thing to do (if this is ever done) is to label the CD correctly. Say that they are classic Journey songs as performed by the current lineup. Maybe add a few that weren't from the dirty dozen - like Edge of the Blade.
In the liner notes, have a forward from JSS saying how much he admired Steve Perry and how it has been a dream of his to perform these songs, etc..........
Just my take. I think it would be cool if they did that. Looking forward to new material first, but I would support a CD of some classics recorded by this lineup.

Excellent points, Ed, and
of course I would support
anything they did too. I greatly admire Jeff's respect for Steve Perry. But I have a question: do you think that doing it the way you suggested would give any weight to the blowhards that say they are nothing but a cover band now?

Why would re-recording the hits from the 70s and 80s help to introduce the band as it is today?
I guess it would be interesting if they dramatically rearranged the songs - but I can't see that happening. Okay - the drumming might be a bit tougher and the vocals a bit weaker. Other than that it'll probably sound like the classics do in concert; very similar versions but not quite as magical as the originals.
The only message a re-recorded GH would send out to the public is: we are a band who peaked twenty-five years ago and we've run out of ideas and have no confidence that our new material will make an impact.
I really hope that Journey don't pursue this idea - or if they do that they only re-record one song with a successful female solo artist (in the way Waite has rehabilitated himself by teaming up with Krauss) and use it as a single to launch an album of new material.
But an entire album of GH covers? A disaster in the making....

#1) blatant cheap shot

, you're lucky you're you and not some tool.

I think JSS' vocals are pretty stinking strong, but very different than SP
#2) love the ROR lineup Av, baby!!!!!

Love the record, love the live ROR songs from the tour!!!
My God, that may have been Journey's nerdiest hour. We're leading the league in sausage casing jeans and shirts that are any permutation of denim, sleeveless, and unbuttoned.
BTW, if you look REAL hard you will see T.C. from Magnum PI (also rolling sleveless, of course) in the cockpit of Matt's beloved helicopter

I agree with you on these two points Matt. I could see taking a couple of the older album cuts that weren't released as singles and adding Jeff's touch to them. Edge of the Blade, Rubicon, Troubled Child, Lay it Down, or Dead or Alive and then maybe even throwing in Believe in Me and something else from Jeff's earlier work that has a Journey sound then putting a few new ones in there could make an interesting release.
Just redoing the hits would be a bad idea though IMO, if they're really intending to move forward. Like Matt said, it just perpetuates the "nostalgia" perception.
Like Andrew said though, it would have to be done with Steve's approval. Unless he's changed his point of view completely I don't see that being much of a possibility.

Doesn't necessarilly have to be the hits.

Exactly! This "loon" would not like it! I'm supportive of JSS in Journey now but please 'for the love of god', don't re-record the songs! Those songs are so special with Steve Perry & they are sealed in that perfect place - leave them be. I obviously have no problem with them being pulled out & sung in concert, but I want them to always be "intangible" in a way. Hard to explain but that is how I feel. I just don't see the reason for it either. Move forward with a contemporary sound for Journey with Jeff....and leave Steve Perry his songs with his voice in his time. Please!

Re-recording the classic Journey songs in a studio would go against all the great vibes I got from last year's Journey show. I could understand a live CD or DVD, but I can't think of any good reason to try to reshape those classic songs with any thought of introducing Jeff with Journey.
