Struggling?I don't think I hear that.He did a fine job back then.

Huh? Struggling?

I thought Steve A. sounded pretty damn good.

...and Neal - he looked 10 years older in '98 than he does now.

Well, I wouldn't call it "struggling"...he DOES get thru the song....

But, to my ears, his voice has WAY too much "high end"...hardly any "mid"s, and NO "lows"...

Steve Perry was crazy like a Fox....those songs are HARD on a Male Vocalist, and he made them look like a walk in the park...

Another point: sorry, but I have the "Perry pronounciation" in my head:

"I didn't wanna say good - baaa-aaahhhh..."

Steve A's version:

"I didn't wanna say good - byyyyy-eeeeee..."

As a Singer, you NEVER pronounce a long "e" or hard "r"...it's always "ah"

He changes some phrasing and doesn't hit some notes ("... that I could give ...", ".. holding me" before the guitar solo) but far from struggling. I hear someone trying to make a song his own but stay faithful to the original.

Agreed, Mr. Schon looks better now. He looks pissed - clearly he's signaling to a monitoring guy at the end of the solo before Augeri comes back in. Love his head shaking lol

Now this is bad. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8WP4GGj0_4

Love it! I couldn't begin to thank Steve Augeri enough for helping bring back the Journey I love.

I had the pleasure of meeting Jon Cain when Journey performed in Clearwater. It is the one and only time I cried after meeting someone and believe me - it was tears of joy. You would think a 45 year old woman wouldn't get so emotional...but his musicianship on the piano has always touched me.

Thanks for the music Journey!

Close your eyes and stuff cotton in your ears, then bury your head under your pillow, and then maybe. I can't believe I ever thought there was a resemblance between those two. :?

Where'd my post go? but anyway, Oh no doubt Donna, once you actualy compare the two, and really listen from times, they have thier own style. But Augeri has big time Perryism and at times you say, that's Steve Perry. But close your eyes and pretend Perry never left and you wouldn't know a difference.

I never thought there was any resemblance at all in their voices other than they both sang in the same general key. His voice sounds shallow, nasal, and stretched. Any tenor lounge singer in any Holiday Inn Bar across America could do as good a job on this song as he does.

You know, back in the early Augeri days, I would have said a similar thing. But...listening to and watching clips now (even from way back then) makes me think that there really aren't that many similarities. Augeri tried, I think, to 'fool' the listeners into thinking exactly what you think (and by fool I don't mean it in a dishonest way, but just that he tried to give the people that little tie to SP). Obviously it worked for some people, not so much for others.

I think the thing I hear when I listen to him is the weakness in his voice. Sure, he could hit a lot of the same notes, but he doesn't 'sell' it as well as SP did and JSS & Deen do now.

I was never really a fan of Steve Augeri though, so I am coming into it with a different perspective than many people here. It's just one fan's opinion. :)

You all are nuts.

He sounds good, and that is a fine show that I happen to own.

Loons.

I hate what happened, obviously. And no one can be Steve Perry. But this WAS Journey and I was happy to have them back.

Back then this was my opinion:

Journey without Steve Perry - that is utter lunacy.

Got dragged to a show - hey this is still pretty damn good.

If he'd have only walked away when his voice crapped out, I'd be his biggest defender. However, he became a mime and deserves all the shit thrown his way. Doesn't change the earlier tours that I enjoyed immensely, but it all leaves a bad taste in my mouth now. It all worked out for the best though because the end result only made the band stronger.

Have to agree with Donna on this, call me shallow or whatever......but for me alot has to do with the charisma and stage presence a frontman has......when it comes to Live. Nothing against Augeri at all, he was a good singer, just didn't have that spark IMO. You can be the best singer in the world, but if you're pretty much just standing there and not grooving to all things around you up there on stage, then it doesn't do anything for me. I think why I'm so sold on JSS is you can see he loses himself in the songs up there, just like Perry did....and there is nothing funner to watch than that. Never get sick of watching those two perform. MOL from Baltimore would be a better example of closing your eyes and hearing Perry, JSS's vocal tone is dead on....the only way that one could be closer to the original is if Perry sang it Live himself, IMO.

Augeri did sound alot like Perry on some songs, like Ask the Lonely, etc. And I have to partially agree with Deen C on BTM, SA really did sound like SP on Separate Ways on the 2001 dvd.

As much as I love music, I am not that great at judging (in some cases) where a singer is struggling or even if wrong notes are hit, so I won't comment on that. I will say that I was so glad that Journey was touring again - it almost didn't matter who was singing. Obviously, if the guy would've been crappy, I would've been bummed, but he was good (not SP, but as others have said, who is, was, or could be?).

Sounded good to me.Despite what happened the last couple of years, I thought Steve A was fucking good and good for Journey. I hate what happened, but nothing can take away from the good times, and the good concerts he did.Not all were good but some were. It was better than having no Journey Thanks for posting the clip

This is what got me going back to concerts again, he sounds fine here, if this was a bad clip lets hear a good clip.

All high end....not much of a singer. Decent rendition at best. I've heard better at karaoke. Jeremey from Frontiers smokes Augeri....no comparison whatsoever. He does do well at thend, but the beginning is simply excrutiating.

This is a decent Augeri rendition of SML but I've heard him cover it better.
All elitist perry propoganda to the side, before his voice blew out the guy could really get it done.

He was never SP, but at the time I think he was the next best guy to fill in FOR Steve.

Deb, exactly what I think! Gotta have the spark or rather the fire...that's Journey...still no one will ever do it better than SP, in my opinion.

I agree with the stage presence. But I thought Augeri and his own style braught you in also. He was more of a crowd worker. Talked to the crowd, and worked off of them. If he was running around all over the place, people would say "oh, that's just him trying to be Steve Perry" J.S.S has the fire SP had and is very fun to watch.

Agreed. I have a few early boots as well. There was a time that Augeri sounded pretty good. That obviously changed, but judge this song (and the other two clips from the same show that are on YouTube) fairly.

I thought Augeri was alright, they would've been better off with Castronovo on vocals than SA. I know DC said he didn't want to front a band, but I think they could've talked him into it. His voice is way better than SA. All moot, the right guy is in place now. Neal needs to spit out the damn gum in that video, drives me nuts.

Well said. Augeri sounds more like Journey should sound. It ain't Perry, but it's close enough for me and MUCH closer than the present incarnation. That's not a JSS slam (who I like) it's just that the sound of the band with Augeri was closer to the original songs. Close as you can get without Perry there. Augeri had a friggin TOUGH gig. NOBODY wants to give him his props for bringing the band back from Perry killing it and nobody wants to give him for the good he DID do while he was able.

Ingrates. Maybe the band should've just vanished after TBF.

DC sings 3 Journey songs in a show. Augeri sang, what 25? If DC had to do that many tunes a night, I don't think he'd cut it.

I'm sorry guys, but anyone who thinks that sounds good just never got what made Journey unique to begin with.

It was all about Perry's vocals. That's what set Journey above the rest, and if Augeri had been singing in 1978 Journey would have been just another struggling band because he's just another singer.
