Ross V about "TapeGate".....

There were reports in the press and on the internet that Journey used backing tapes on the Leppard tour?
This is another urban myth! It just didn't happen. The rumour got prominence because we were changing singers - Steve Augieri's voice did give out. It's a very difficult setlist. Not even Steve Perry could hold up very long, I believe, because these songs are very demanding of any singer.

Right now there's another rumour circulating that the drummer with Soul SirkUS, Virgil Donati, is rehearsing for a tour with a major artist - yet to be announced. The fans think he's going to replace Deen Castronovo.

Another rumour: Ross Valory is going to retire! It's very interesting that no-one told me. But this is how the story goes?

It turns out the person who stirred up the tape issue is not a journalist and didn't have the correct information. It appears to me some people have too much time on their hands, sometimes fans can be over-obsessed with the band of their dreams and they can get to be too imaginative or creative in order to provoke a response. It's like they're clutching at straws, and even inventing those straws! I don't, of course, wish to disparage the bulk of our fans.

Maybe you should ask Ross V- he said it. I didn't.

What do you expect him to do, dumbass? Admit it?

And no one accused them of using tapes on the Leppard tour.

My edjamacated guess is that H@kk meant your point in starting a new thread on this when we have a perfectly viable one going a few posts down.

If you read the article, TRUE DUMBASS, the question specifically asks about the use of backing tapes on the LEPPARD TOUR. Think before you post. It helps....

And NIG is saying tapes weren't used on the Lippard tour.
At least not to the colossal extent used in '05.
In fact, it was the deliberate banning of tapes (by Mngt.) that enabled the band to haul Steve overboard.

From Jeremey....

This is the Escape audio from the Vegas 2001 DVD:
www.journeytributeband.com/escapevegassolo.wma

This is the Escape audio from the Manchester show in early 2006. Listen for the inflections in the vocal track. They are identical to the Vegas audio:
www.journeytributeband.com/escapemanchestersolo.wma

Now here are both tracks synched together, one in the left ear and one in the right. With headphones on, there is a perfect stereo (identical) vocal mix:
www.journeytributeband.com/splitescapefull.wma

One thing I found surprising was that Augeri did some very specific vocal inflections and melody changeups, and they were identically repeated night after night.

It happened, no way to justify or deny it, the band is doing damage control to the best of their ability, it's over, we have a great new frontman. End of story. Enjoy the new Journey, they're great. :D

During a UK concert there were eye witness accounts of people mentioning Augeri's microphone cutting out midway during "Faithfully" in Manchester.
UK fans actually cited this incident as irrefutable proof that tapes couldn't possibly have been used.

However, when the clip was finally posted online it became laughably obvious.
It wasn't the mic that cut out, it was the tape that did.
Leaving a vocally-crippled Augeri to fend for himself.

With any luck, this link should still work.
The tape (an isolated vocal from the 2001 Vegas dvd) cuts short at 1:06.
Listen carefully for Deen pulling double duty and saving Steve's ass by singing the high parts at the end.
