History of Journey Message Boards

This is a legititmate question, no smack intended to anyone.

I was wondering about the evolution of Back Talk, and the MR forums (and any other past or present message board). Have heard bits and pieces here and there. Really I'm curious to know when all these forums sprung up, who are the people that have been around forever, that kind of thing. I realize that Frank was one of the early ones and now runs JF. CJ has been around along time I know as well. Also, when did Dean come onto the scene?

Just looking to get some perspective. Sometimes I get PM's about people and it's assumed I know who they are just because I am known and have a forum.

Drew, if this is out of line, pull the thread because I really don't mean it as a basis for attacking anyone. Just legitimately do not know and am curious.

For the record, I found BT in 2001 and got to see soundcheck in Wilmington, DE because I was a member there. I lurked at MR forever before I finally joined.

Good question Ed, I am curious as well.

Great topic Ed. I'm interested in reading the responses as long as they don't devolve into a sniping and snarking battle. :?

I really can't contribute anything to it other than my own history. I came on line looking for info on Steve Perry in the late '90s, I honestly don't remember the year. At that time I found several Yahoo groups and VH1. I found BT shortly thereafter. I was mostly a VH1 person for as long as it lasted.

I remember when Dean joined. He didn't like all the fighting going on at the time and said that he was leaving. He posted that we all knew more about Journey's history and that he didn't know what all the fighting was about.
I told him to stick around and develop a thick skin. He stuck around and started getting into the fray. I posted, "Oh, oh! I've created a monster." He posted back. "No, you just woke a sleeping giant."Who knows where Journey would be today if I had left him sleeping.

You, Liz, are a fool. Best to take your foot out of your mouth now while you can. Tapegate saved this band, like it or not, and yes, I am at the forefront and proud of everything I did. Ross fucking lied. Simple as that.

The ones that know, know Dean. Best just to let the people who don't know stay happy with what they want to believe.

I found BT back in 2001, too. However, I've never made it to a sound check. Never had M&G access, either. WTF??

I met Neal, Jon and Ross once in the lobbly of a casino.. only because I was able to time things right. Never met Steve Augeri.. doesn't matter now, I guess?? Never met Deen, either. Meeting Deen would be cool, as my son-in-law plays drums.

I met with JSS a few times. Actually, Neal too. I met all of Soul SirkUS, during that tour, which was way cool. Marco and Virgil are great people. There's a lot of history is behind Soul SirkUS' band members. That was so much fun!

Hopefully, I will get a chance to meet Deen someday. I've heard nothing but great things about him when it comes to meeting. Seems to be a very cool dude, from what I hear.

AR,

Way before the MR forums and the BT forum, there were a few forums about Journey. I've slept a few times since then but the best one I remember was the Skylorde forum that started sometime in the mid 90's. It was really the only forum that wasn't heavily moderated like BT is today. Skylorde's forum was similar to what Mac offers today. The only folks I remember from that forum that are around now are Skylorde, Monker and myself. I'm sure there is more but that is all I can remember.

That's all I know,

Aaron

Sky's Journey forum was the first Journey forum I ever posted on and then BT from there.

I found Skylords' forum back about '97, after TBF came out. I was very new to the internet at the time and, for whatever reason, didn't get involved with any message boards at the time.

I lurked at MR for awhile, too, before delving in. Deano pissed me off so much I had too. I have since found out that he's a pretty cool guy. Sometimes still, though, it is fun to fuck with him!

I'll be hard pressed too offer antything worthwhile to this thread...as my memory sucks these days.

From what I remember, I went from Journey-L to Sky's board...and from there, Sky and I started working on the Journey board....I remember purchasing, setting up and launching the original BT board (I think they're still actually using the same software)....Then back talk took a progressive spiral downward (as well documented here and elsewhere) and I basically said 'fuck it' and stopped posting on journey forums until recently.

IIRC, at the time I gave up on BT...this forum was already setup, but no one really posted here...the only really discussion traffic was over on Andrew's Noticeboard....traffic must've picked up afterwards.

So you got Sky's stuff and Steven Lake of course had a great tribute with links and info all around. Monker was a part of the mailing list before this. I know Sony put up a Journey board for TBF in 1995/1996 and Back Talk was a part of journey-the-band.com. VH1 sprung to life as a place where the fighting REALLY took over. When I joined there it was because what I saw was a a place to openly bash and trash Steve and I felt the need to "defend" Journey and Steve. I learned a LOT during my time at VH1. Meanwhile there was very little action here. When VH1 closed it seemed all the fighting moved here. It was still only a handful of people though. Some people stoked the fires here and others helped to begin the support of this board. Meanwhile, BT went Nazi and more people came here, making it what we love today. Then Sky and Frank came back.

Wow. I had no idea of the history. I was such a latecomer to the flock.

Warning: boring alert:

I hated forums for years since a bad one in the mid-90s (non-Journey) w/stalkers left a BAD taste in mouth. I realized that internet people usually do nothing but talk so my life was safe :-) (I think).

One day in like 03 I was bored & clicked the link for BT. I got more bored! But I read a bit here & there from time to time, usually before or after a show I went to. I found myself wondering if everyone who was a Journey fan except me had exceptionally low IQ. (Sorry, but it's true.) Then I wondered if some of these people who posted their pics in their sigs were having their kids post instead of them. B/c most of the talk seemed kinda juvenile, uneducated, & um 'wiggly' if u catch my drift. I never signed up for an account till last December & that was just cos someone asked me to.

Then this past summer I heard of MR there ...as a BAD place. Ooh I had to check that out. I never even knew there were other forums about Journey. So I came on over & WOW! I lurked & read & thought wow (again), some of these people are actually intelligent & write about stuff that is interesting. I read thru many cool discussions & learned a LOT about Journey I never knew.

I wasn't scared of Deano (well maybe a bit). I saw thru what he was writing & said this a real Journey fan. Actually, Niggy scared me the most. I wasn't sure where he was coming from (sorry dahlink).

So I stuck around & I read about the whole TG fiasco, starting liking some folks here & finally had the guts to join. I expected to get some serious grief especially as an obvious Perry fan. Well right away everyone except Niggy was actually nice to me & even Niggy wasn't that bad. Niggy suspected me at first & called me out to see if I had an agenda. But I gave him crap back & we became friends right away & I thought oh I get the guy now, he's cool.

Some time after that, I met Dean in PM (I initiated it w/a question) & he was totally cool back. I mean like really really nice. I thought woah what is all this stuff about Dean? These folks need to PM him. He is super cool. So he & I became friends. He's a great friend too & has been good to me. Funnily enough I've heard lots of people say they were scared of Dean to begin w/. Weird because I liked his humor right off the bat.

So then I met other people & they were cooler than cool. I mean like CRL, Oh Sherrie, Behshad, Strungout, DonnaPlease, Fredinator, Granny, Jeremy, Shania, JourneyGal, AR, St John, & I'm sure I forgot some. What is not to like about these awesome people? When I was sick, these folks were awesome to me. Dean & Lula were amazingly kind. I have never been met w/this kindness in my life, never mind on an internet forum. I was blown away by these folks & their support.

Somewhere along the way, I started reading Andrew's columns & his comments & just loved the guy. He is something really special in terms of a person & especially a forum owner/moderator. I just love Andrew.

So apart from McNeil & Monker no one here was mean to me really. & that's just what they do to people. That's their schtick but neither of them are bad people either I bet (or do I have rose colored glasses). Took me a while to get them & Journey forums & the personalities. I think maybe if some people are mean to u, it means ur ok?

Either way, glad I'm here. Lots of great folks.

I was late to the party too.
Went looking for Steve perry info and came across MelRock right in the middle of TapeGate and all the forum fighting.
I wondered what the Hell was happening, but even though a lot of the personal attacks and stuff made me feel a tad uncomfortable, I found it all strangely addictive. Kept on checking in to read the next instalment of the next fight.

And I'm still here.
I had a peek at Perryvile and BT but no others.
It's this one which just keeps on luring me back.
It has great characters on it and I just love to read it.

Was this Stephen Lake's site? I remember that too.

There was also a Journey Digest site with a messageboard at one time in the late '90s, other than the Yahoo Group.

I don't remember if there was messageboard on Journey Dave's site or not.

RollingStone.com had a Perry board at one time in the '90s with a FTLOSM pic on it, I don't know about Journey.

I remember the Journey Library, but I don't think there was a messageboard there. Lots of other interesting  stuff though.

VH1 was great and a lot of us cut out teeth there. They were good to the Journey fans until they decided to back Journey on a tour and decided that all the debated issues on the board were not in Journey's best interest. That was the rumor anyway.

After they shut the message board down, a lot of the posters went to Perry sites. I think that at that time, Perryville branched off from Unofficial SP, Perrytales branched off from Perryville and The Hotel branched off from Perrytales. I remember being at Perrytales and going to lurk at Mr. I told the girls that Perry was being ripped at Mr. with no one there to sing his praises. They said, You go. We'll watch." That's when I joined as Atthistime and had some of the best discussions with Fred and Monker.
Andrew deleted a lot of good stuff and what a shame as it was when a lot of good people were posting. J Dave, LaWomen, Ace, Bamamutt and Journeynut.

I remember back in '96 when I was just becoming a fan going to the AOL message board in their music forum several months before TBF came out. If I remember right, I think there was a chat room called "Deep Groove" that everyone on that board came out and chatted on every Sunday for a time as well.
