Just finished listening too this for the first time ( THanks Classicrockldy) Perry seemed in rare form that night. It is weird too be able too listen too that and the band sounded like they were having a great time, and all was well. But that was one of the last shows they did, I thibnk the tour went for another month or so. They didn't let anything show in the performence. Was anybody there at this show?? I thought Ask the Lonley and Wheel In The Sky were played way too fast. Just though it was weird to look back at this show and did the band relize they were in the final few shows ???

Terrific show, despite poor audio the energy and band tightness is palpable on that New Year's Eve....get rid of the Mowtown covers and this could be a top boot. Lacks the sound quality of Detroit and especially Philly.
Deano, you hooked me up w/ this one and tacked the ESC4P3 25th Anniv interviews on the end.

I was there. Loved it. They did play too fast, but the Motown covers were cool as fuck. Hear Friga on Stand By Me? The Frig is multi talented to be sure. Perry was indeed in form.

I thought the Motown covers fit in well because it was NY EVE. Reach Out was awesome. A good show with no hint at what was to come.

Everyone had a new wife or girlfriend that night They did sound great, but I guess they were a bit fast on several songs. I will never forget the bumping and grinding that SP did before LTS. What a horny old man... LOL!! It was great!!!!

Wasn't that the night Concrete Blonde opened for them? That was such a weird billing? I thought they were roadies until they started playing and singing

I was lucky enough to see the two or three shows at Long Beach the week before too By New Year's I couldn't scream if my life depended on it. Was the Outfield who opened that tour?? Thanks for bringing back the great memory.

Outfield I beleive opened a few shows, Glass Tiger did most. Steve P. seemed too be having a great time. maybe hitting the booze a bit early. Kinda weird how the only songs he made a long speech about and went into a bit of a pre-song rotuine were Strung Out and Oh Sherrie. Just something that at the time didn't seem like anything, but looking back might of ment something. maybe I am reading into this but its fun too look and listen back and try and figure what the band was thinking.

Yeah, the motown stuff was very cool.

Just used my brain and looked at the ROR re-issue and after Long Beach Journey olny played 6 more shows 4 in Hawaii and 2 in Alaska where it ended .

I've got that one, too. I like the Motown stuff, and I believe that they played too fast during most of the ROR tour shows.

WITS as always seemed too be played faster each tour along with Ask The Lonley. The tempo they are played at now seems really good. i wonder if this was done for the reason too fit more songs inot a set. How much time could they really save? Was it eaiser for Perry too sing these songs faster? When doing the tour 5-6 shows per week this might help. MAybee JSS has an answer too this ?

I don't dig the sound that tour at all......some of you dismiss the fact they played the songs so fast as if it is a minor thing.

Jeff has answered this question before. He said playing the songs faster is a technique singers use to preserve their voices during demanding tour schedules. With the band playing faster, the singer does not have to hold the killer notes as long. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I don't have too much of a problem with it. Some I LIKE a little more punched up.
But speeding AWYWI up any more than it already IS borders on the ridiculous.

I'm wondering how they sped up the backing vocal tapes in '86, or maybe all the shows were that speed.

I didn't mind hearing the cover tunes, Stand By Me is one of my favorite songs anyway, so I liked hearing Steve sing it, except...I was a little surprised at Steve singing Jailhouse Rock and, uh... not knowing the words.
