Jeff, if the only thing she had to complain about was your hair, I think you've got nothing to worry about. She could have said your singing sucked  ( not that it does AT ALL!)

She sounds like someone that was dumped by some rocker in her past.

I think she just had to find something to make a smartass comment about. For some reason reviewers think that's the cool thing to do.

What she means, like most of the short-sighted post-1991 (grunge) arsehole members of the press in this country (UK) is that she doesn't care for true individual talent and any virtuosity regarding guitars, keys or drums. They just don't get it. Its a british disease, anybody truly talented who sticks their head above the crowd, gets a rock thrown at it. Maybe if they had worn baggy combats, ill-fitting hoodies, got plenty of acne and spots, mooched around miserably, comletely disconnected from the audience and removed all evidence of guitar/drum/keyboard solols from the material, she would have given them the full five stars.

Amazingly thats why the Darkness charted in this country a couple of years ago - all those wanker journos thought they were 'getting' the nudge-wink joke - but infact the joke was the Darkness themselves - if Justin Hawkins had sang in that pathetic manner in the US, he'd have been laughed off the stage, like he should have been in the UK.

Jeff, if you go back on line by chance - I'm only hours away from seeing you guys at Nottingham and I CAN'T FUCKING WAIT!!!!! Middle of the stalls about 8 rows back!

Oh, I don't know...the Darkness rocked when I saw them at the Brixton Academy three or four years ago. Sure, they played up to the essential absurdity of the genre but they did it with love.

As for the review in the Scotsman...well, the writer clearly loved the concert. There's no need to get all upset about the fact that she found it all quite amusing too - and didn't write about the show in a tone of solemn awe.

Take your point, but surely your sensibilites are stretched to the limit when Hawkins sings in that dreadful manner? Its like a teenagers imitation of a bonafide 'rock' vocalist. And the material is so overly cheesy and cliche-ridden...?

She clearly did enjoy the concert but its the undercurrent of 'these guys should know better at their age' and the references to 'poodle perms' as a focal point of the review, so yes I do reserve the right to get upset by a fucking 'journo' who, by all accounts 'should know better'. Her response is exactly my point, she sees no differnce between Journey, the genuine article and The Darkness, pastiche novelty band.

It seems that no matter how good a show is, how great a singer's voice is etc., critics ALWAYS have to say something about the hair and/or the way they're dressed.

Hmmm, maybe she comes from BT?

Good point Marc...and in fact she was implying that the Darkness were actually cooler than Journey because they were aware of the absurdity whereas Journey are not.

For me...the Darkness were a pastiche novelty act too...and I didn't take them seriously at all. Journey? Well, I take them deadly seriously on one level - but on another I agree with the journo about the cliched AOR moves, the pomposity and earnestness and so on. The difference is...she is being snide when she says it whereas I love Journey all the more for it!

I guess her point was that Chicago's power ballads were huge hits in the UK in the 1980s...whereas Journey's weren't.

yes, and doesn't it underline the fickle nature of the UK buying demographic that those Chicago ballads (Hard Habit etc, which I secretly do like despite Cetera's slightly whiny vocals)? I could never see why Open Arms, Who's Crying Now or Faithfully wouldn't have been big hits in the UK at that time? That said DSB has always been very popular in mainstream circles here - if any decent covers band plays it in a pub everyone loves and remembers it which is always slightly strange, amongst Reckless era Bryan Adams and the like...

The bitch doesnt have a clue. She shouldve dont her homework before tryin to review Journey. She didnt even bother checkin out Jeff's long resume to find out that the guy doesnt need any breaks between songs to lay down backstage. Her damn name reminds me more of the poodle perms than anything else! Im just glad she at least got the name right and didnt call him James Scott Soto like that dusche bag from Columbus did!
Damn you William Wallace for giving these guys the right to have their own land !! Had they been part of England, theyd known more about Almighty Neal and Sir Soto!

Miss Fiona ( ) lost her credibility and my interest as soon as she typed:"terminally unhip and maligned genre of music".She's obviously a half-brained hip-hoppotamus living in the dark under someone's smelly kilt.

Chicago NOW...not so good.
Chicago THEN (before Terry Kath blew his brains out)...amazing.

Even Hendrix said Kath was one of the best guitar players he's ever seen.
