OT: Songs of Life

Have any of you guys ever had a certain song or artist that reminded you of someone you were madly in love with? And, when you broke up, you could no longer listen to this song or artist anymore? That is the way I am/was with Billy Joel. I met my ex-fiancee' three years ago. She is probably Billy Joel's biggest fan on this earth. She plays piano and of course, practices with her favorite Billy Joel tunes. Anyways, she ended our engagement a year ago, and since then, I couldn't bring myself to listen to Billy Joel without tearing up. I'll tell ya, I loved her more than anything on this earth. Well, as my story goes, she chats with me this past Sunday evening, telling me how much she missed seeing me. So, we had lunch together this past Tuesday, and since that point...I can't stop listening to Billy Joel. I won't get into the details as to why we broke up, but listening to Billy Joel reminds me of how much I loved her and, well, I guess...still love her. When I look back on things, she probably isn't exactly made for me. Heck, we disagree on quite a few things, but we always seemed to agree that life without each other doesn't make sense.

I don't know why I'm writing this stuff to you guys other than the fact that we all share a common bond in loving a rock band that plays some of the sweetest love songs ever heard. I'll tell ya, if any music artist/song writer ever needs inspiration to write songs about loving, losing, and being hopelessly in love, they should sit down with me and let me tell them my past experiences with my ex-fiancee' in these past 3 years. I bet you could easily have an album, no, a box set written easily.

By the way, I'm getting ready to listen to Captain Jack! ;-)

I just hope the party isn't over, because I am truly, hopelessly in love!

Greggie,

It takes a lot of balls to write what you just did.

I know. And you know, it's a situation where if I say anything to my friends about it, they will have nothing good to say about her and will say I'm crazy, stupid, sad, and just plain out dumb. But ya know, I don't care anymore. Every girl I have turned to since her just hasn't seemed like the right choice. In fact, everything seemed as if it lead me straight to her. Maybe I am crazy, stupid, sad, or just plain out dumb. But, at least I can accept being those things and knowing exactly who I truly care about, than to play charades with someone who's just another pretty face.

Ha...well very slowly. I haven't had much time to practice, but I have made an oath to myself that I am going to master that instrument if it's the last thing I do!

If Ed was any kind of brother, friend, drunk neighbour, he would kill you now, and save you from the misery.....

I will never forget this...Haha....I was sleeping on the floor in Ed's basement, after we drank til 5 AM, and you were heading up the stairs and you said, loudly, "Great, I get to go home and fuck my fat girlfriend." I busted a nut on that

Sometimes I find that life mimics these poigniant Stones lyrics rather starkly:

"You're gonna get it straight from the shoulder
Can't you see the party's over
Let me go

Can't you get it through your thick head
This affair is finished - dead
Hey, let me go

I tried giving you the velvet gloves
I tried giving you the knockout punch
Hey, let me go
Let me go
Let me go
Let me go
Let me go

I find it hard to be cruel
I find it hard to be cruel
With a smile, don't you?
You'll never find that perfect love
That you read about
That you dream about

Maybe I'll become a playboy
Hang around in gay bars
And move to the west side of town

You're gonna get it straight from the shoulder
Can't you see the party's over
Hey, let me go
Let me go

So you think I'm giving you the brush off
Well I'm just telling you to shove off
Hey, let me go

This ain't no time to waste my breath
We're going into sudden death
Hey, let me go

Can't you get it through your thick head
This affair is dead as a doornail
Hey, baby won't you let me go

The bell has rung, and I've called time
The chair is on the table, out the door baby

Baby won't you let me go
Let me go..."

Happy I could add some lightness to your day, there, AR.

Or when "live" is REALLY persistent and it's "No More Mr Nice Guy" time Jagger/Richards have another feel-good little romp:

" get home in the evening, when my day is through
The telephone starts ring ring ring but I know it's only you
Why don't you leave me alone, leave me alone, baby
Well I'm sick and tired of you keep on chasing me

I go out to a party, to get you out of my head
I look across that crowded room and I see you sitting there
Why don't you leave me alone, leave me alone
Well I'm sick and tired of you keep chasing me

Ah you say that you love me, I break your heart in two
If you leave me alone for a little while, I might come chasing you
Why don't you leave me alone, leave me alone, baby
Well I'm sick and tired of you keep on chasing me, oh yes I am!

Leave me alone, leave me alone, baby
Well I'm sick and tired of you keep on chasing me

Yeah, leave me alone, leave me alone baby
Won't you leave me me alone, oh yeah, leave me alone baby
Well I'm sick and tired of you keep chasing me

Yeah, leave me alone, leave me alone, baby
Won't you leave me alone, oh yeah, leave me alone, baby
Well I'm sick and tired of you keep chasing me."

Aw Greggie your post got me all choked up and I am SO generally UNromantic. I came through the fire and dropped all notions of romance a long time ago. LOL

I remember once after I got dumped by a man I TRULY loved, I couldn't listen to Garth Brooks' "The Dance" for about a year afterwards. It would make me sob buckets.

More recently, I've been in love with this guy that treats me like shit (thank god, we don't date, so on the bright side, I had my wits about me enough to not date him!) but I still love him and it sucks to be in love with an ass. So I listen to shit like "Like We Never Loved at All" by Faith Hill (MAN I should know better than to listen to shitty country music!!) and crap like that.

BUT Here's where it gets good. Everytime I feel down, I put on Survivor's "I'm Not That Man Anymore" and I feel REALLY fucking empowered. I adore that song for that. It reminds me that although I can't seem to control who I fall in love with, I can control what I do about it, and that's miles above the person I used to be.

I'm Not That Man Anymore

Teardrops, falling from your eyes like raindrops,
Pouring from the skies,
Remember, you used to have the love I needed, back when we were young
Lovin' always came so easy, heaven shared our love,
Magic, the first time that I held you, you fit like a glove.
You'd soothe me, with a shrug of your heart you could move me,
It always seemed my love would find you, when you needed a friend
I would be the man who would understand you,

*But I'm not that man anymore,
And I'm not gonna throw my heart away,
No, that's not me anymore,
Baby I've changed. *

One look is all it took to tell me your love was made of lies,
Madness to think that I believed your reasons, your alibis,
The day girl, when I turned to look the other way girl,
I realized the game you were playin' was breakin' my heart,
I can see it plainly, time has changed me.

( * Repeat)

Best Break Up Song Ever:

I Don't Care Anymore by Phil Collins.

Man, I have cranked that up to maximum volume many times in my life. It would be great if you could tie the heart breaker to a chair and scream/sing along with Phil in their face

Reminds me of when Hideo Nomo was still playing baseball and clever PA guys used to play the end of the song with Collins saying "No more No more No More No More" when he came up.
