I have to say from the more recent boots that all the sudden it seems that Jeff is singing the higher parts with so much more ummmm,... ummm trueness ? Not that his pitch was ever bad it just seems the tembre of his voice is just better for the songs now. Less throaty ? Jeff whats going on man? How did you achive this ? You are sounding better that I have ever heard you sound on the Journey stuff. Open the door = Goosebumps. Fucking well done mate !
What you got to say about all this Jeff ?

I would guess it's just a matter of finding the right tools in his toolbox to get the job done. Listening to some of the boots from Manchester, it's clear Jeff's got his footing with the material - And has figured where to put his voice to meet the demand of the songs.

I remember reading somewhere that he started working with a vocal coach that Jon recommended. That I would assumed has helped - and also proper rest as well. (my guess

)

I thought i saw him talk about this here but it might have been elsewhere, i believe he said that in certain parts he was more or less powering thru parts of songs , but now has changed to finessing particular areas of songs with a more desired result(this isnt word for word but it sort of what i remember from his conversation).

I remember that post Yulog. It was here but I don't remember the thread it was in. He said(paraphrasing) he had started to transition in to his head voice for the high notes rather than powering them up out of the high end of his main voice.

I had the SAME thought. If you look at the "Blatant Hero Worship" post I absolutely cannot believe the change. And YES he DID have pitch problems early on. He was not singing those songs well. Now, he OWNS. I'm totally impressed and just wondering what the hell witch doctor has increased his range because I definitely want to hook up with said witch doctor. Amazing difference. HOW is that possible? I'd like whatever he's having please...

Actually, the truth is...it's really Barry Bonds singing for Journey these days.
JSS's just lipping the stuff that Barry pre-recorded while he was recovering from knee surgury last year.

Between head voice helping on the high register stuff & pulling one of the personal monitors out for pitch, seems I found the trick to getting me through the stuff easier...I never used head voice or personal monitors on any of my past gigs so it was all a matter of retraining the process for this monster

And yes, Barry's vocal assistance helps considerably!

Really? U never sang in head voice before? Wow. What about the Queen stuff? Freddie used head voice so I assumed u must have too.
Do u have trouble controlling ur air as u bridge up? Every singer I've ever talked to says that's the most difficult part to get the hang of: using less air as u got up instead of what most people intuitively do which is use more air.

No, that's falsetto, huge difference. Most of the Queen stuff I can do in real voice, wouldn't work in head voice, would sound like Perry singing Mercury!

Jeff, since I have no vocal training at all, none of this makes any sense to me, but listening sure does...Whatever the reason, you sound fantastic to my ears...hope all is well in Europe...

On Bohemian Rhapsody he's in falsetto yeah. But isn't he into head voice for parts of songs like Somebody To Love, Who Wants To Live Forever, Barcelona?
Perry singing Mercury, hmmm. No thanks. Although Mercury might have been able to do some Perry at the end?
Edit: Never mind. I just listened again to ur version of Somebody To Love & u don't do it the same way Freddie did w/parts in head voice. Ur in chest voice except for the beginning which is falsetto.
I haven't heard u sing the other 2 songs tho. Hint hint ...

Head voice is that thing that tells you to go stalk people, when to strike and to tell people they are on fire when in fact you are peeing on them. Head voice is what tells me that satan is an ok guy. Nice to see others have head voice too.

I thought head voice is when someone kicks you square in the nuts just before going on stage.

Oh, Frank....
coincidentally the female traffic in this little ol' thread increases exponentially when JSS appears and starts talking about "head (voice)."
Christ you can almost HEAR the collective panting and scrambling for the keyboards.
