And especially you idiots who despise Steve Perry. Dude was a pretty good Goddamned vocalist I would say.
I was watching Houston DVD......
This might just be the best fucking band incarnation ever. I looked...hard, and didn't see any ear monitors. Yeah there were stage monitors, but the band are so synced ( a good word here), that I don't think they once looked at the monitors. Soto, ask Schonny, go wake his ass up....I'll wait. Was this his/their best show? or one of them? My fucking Lord, the musicianship is flawless and I didn't know God changed his name to Steve Perry?

Oh make no mistake, I am a Perry guy......I am also a Soto Pop too...sorry Jeff, I know that's gay, but who cares?I am a Journey guy through and though. I was even a huge Augeri supporter for awhile....
But the difference between me and the Loons is I respect the hell out of neal Fucking Schon too. Loons don't. To me. no Neal, no Journey.... and then of course the Frigadier general. That guy slays ass!
NIG is gay.

Very true.
<---- Now clearly I'm a Perry-girl, but I'm a Journey-girl too. And for the same reason as Deano just stated. HELL of a freakin' vocalist above all else. The vocals never cease to amaze me. I still listen and hear new things I never noticed. Interesting little vocalizations that are so slight that Perry himself probably hasn't noticed them yet.

There's so much going on there, it's amazing. There's other things that separate the loons (of which I am not one) but we've already been over that.
Beside the vocals, give me that Schon solo on Stone in Love and that rockin' ass bridge on Escape and hell, gimme some keytar while you're at it.

Um...okay don't, but you get my point.

Oh you just did not ask for some Friga did you?
You want the Frig to run wild on your ass?

My point was I respect the crap out of Journey.
Friga can run wild on my ass if he wants to, long as he keeps riding that whale.
He's my homey.
And feel free to stone me for saying a thing like 'homey'.

The Houston DVD was recorded over two consecutive dates. I was at the show in Dallas the day before. It was my first concert EVER. And it was the best concert I've ever seen to this date. I remember it really well. Loverboy opened for them, and we were just a little late getting to Reunion Arena and Loverboy was playing Working For The Weekend as we were getting to our seats. Loverboy played a great show, and it seemed like forever before they got the stage ready for Journey. Journey knocked the place dead. My ears rang for two days, and half of that was from the screaming crowd. Fantastic show.

The Houston show is what solidified Journey as my favorite band. Not even ROR could change that.

Perry does one hell of a job improvising the same songs every night. Every live show I've gone to or heard was NEVER the same vocally, and before you rip me a new one, by that, I mean you can be singing along with him and think he's going one way with it and totally goes another and blows socks off. THAT is what I've missed since he's been gone. You never knew if he would sing the song one certain way. It kept the music spontaneous. Neal always improvises and for the record, he is a guitar GOD. Totally unnoticed by the media, but he is a legend.

Exactly! Thank you for saying this, I love the way Perry made each song so unique at every performance.

That's what made Perry a head or two above everyone else. As far as Neal being unnoticed, I guess that depends on where you get your news from. He's heralded, but like you, I think not nearly enough. This has been posted before, but take a look and see what a true musician can do. This is nowhere near his material, but IMO steals the fucking show.

Cat,
I've noticed that too. When I've seen others improvise, it's usually to make up for some shortcoming in that particular song on that particular night. In the past, I have been disappointed when performers don't sing the song the way 'it is supposed to be sung' (like it's recorded), but I can honestly say that I've NEVER been disappointed by how SP has done it. It utterly amazes me that he can change things up so frequently and still sound so damned great!!!
He's definitely one of a kind!!!!

This DVD is truly amazing. If you buy nothing else Journey this year after you get Generations (

) get this, by any means.
If you don't want to fork out for the SE, there's a bare bones release of just the DVD (and also just the cd) that can be had for about $8 less.
The band was indominatable and Perry did an amazing job producing this timecapsule.
Still like Vegas 01 a lot, too but the rendition of Keep On Running on this dvd/cd may be the best live song released by the band EVER.

You sure you were there? I don't think so based on your post.
Last time I checked. Reunion Arena is in Dallas, NOT Houston. I think you meant the "Summit."

Right and it was recorded straight through, 1 show.
Don't mistake it with GHL which has songs from the 6th AND 7th.
