Neal, Perry, or The Frig? Does Smitty's Vital Information count? Ah, I'll throw him in here too. And JSS.

Thats a tough one...so I didn't vote....for some reason I cannot compare SP to JSS...I know all of SP solo stuff but I just getting into all of JSS stuff which BTW, is excellent...Boot Lady sent me most of JSS previous CD, and WOW, they are awesome...I think their voices are totally different but truly love them both...
SO, I pick JSS and SP!

Perry sold the most records, but he really only has 2 releases. Not exactly a solo "career". Lazy fuck.

Quality...not quantity...
"Street Talk" alone means that Perry wins hands down.

I love Street Talk.
FTLOSM sucks donkey balls though.
Soto has tons of great material. Critically, his output blows Perry out of the water as a "solo".

Voted for Jeff, since he's done so much & it's all great imo. One of my fav singers, way before joining Journey.
SP is my fav of all time though.

No, Perry never did fulfill his potential as a solo artist - but let's get real: JSS was never in the same league.

This is a very good question.
I could make the case for 5 of the guys.
1) Perry. Commercial success. Platinum Records. Hit songs.
2) Schon. Awesome material, side prjects, and oh yeah, a Grammy nomination.
3) Friga. Tons of piano issues and now dude has a top 7 AC hit.
4) Soto. Might have done more than all those combined, and did it without the Journey name to sell himself. Impressive body of work.
5) Rolie. He might have more quality than them all.

FTLOSM...superb methinks. Surprised you'd disregard it like that AR, even if its just for the opener with those lush vocals. Big production as well, more late 80s than built for speed 90s, but still sounds good.

Perry only had two solo albums and maybe a total of 3 songs off of those two albums which were of a similar quality to his output with Journey. Jeff has had, what, four strictly "solo" albums which, from what I've heard of them, are better than Perry's two, but Jeff also has forty billion other projects he's worked on, with Talisman, Takara, Human Clay, Humanimal, Axel Rudi Pell, Kuni, Skrapp Mettle, etc., etc., etc. and everything that I've heard has fallen in the range of solid to fantastic. I'd put anything by Talisman up against Perry's solo material any day of the week and twice on Sunday, and I have always loved Journey with Perry. I just don't think the songwriting was there for Perry without Neal and Jon, and even though the voice was still there, the songs, for the most part, were weak. Neal has some nice solo stuff, too, but my vote goes to JSS.

Oh, I agree Marc. It's a big, lush record with some great tracks. But for me it didn't quite hit the heights of "Street Talk". Also - "Melody" off Against the Wall is one of my favourite Perry performances.
Overall, though - in terms of quality and quantity - I don't think Perry's solo career reflected his spectacular talent.
But the same can be said for Schon and Cain. Sorry but I cannot listen to Smooth Jazz and it baffles me why these two extraordinary muasicians have wasted so much time being so utterly bland.

I had to go with Perry since he's the one who's most widely known and has charted higher than any of the others, even Journey. Of course the song he charted highest with just happened to be Oh Sherrie.

Mind you, Frig, Schon and Randy Jackson rocked like a mutha when they did Freight Train Heart with Aussie Jimmy Barnes, thats got some superb co-written stuff on, kind of hard Journeyesque. 1987 I think?

I've only ever heard "solid"....except maybe "Believe In Me". But even that wilts in comparison to - say - "Foolish Heart".

Perry NEVER charted higher than Journey be it CD's or songs.
Song- Open Arms was #2
Album-Escape #1

Best Schon. Not my usual Perry rip, either b/c if he could've kept putting out quality stuff like his first 2 records he'd up there. Schon has multiple good solo works.
Must successful, Perry EASILY.

I SWEAR, that I have tried to spin that record and just can't get into it. Same with Trial By Fire.
I think Street Talk is a fucking masterpiece though. "Captured By The Moment", "Running Alone", "Strung Out" - I'm all about that shit.

Had to vote Perry, simply 'strungout' out on The Voice.

Enjoying the hell out of Jeff's solo work though, so he's thisclose! And I haven't heard enough of Gregg's, Smitty's or Jon's solo work to even say.

Yes, that was a bit gay, wasn't it? Maybe I should have chosen "Captured By the Moment" or "Strung Out" instead.

Thank you Behshad. I was starting to feel insecure about my masculinity for a moment there.
Can I ask...have you heard "Elegance On The Catwalk" by Jonathan Cain? If so, do you think that you have to be both gay and deaf to appreciate it?

I'm not sure this one is even close. Out of the people on that list, Perry is the only one who most of America even knows had a "solo career". As I've said in the past, whether you like Perry or not (and I know many here don't), it doesn't change the fact that Perry is the only member of Journey who had mainstream, commercial success without the name Journey attached to it!

No - but he came very, very close. "Oh Sherrie" was #3.
Street Talk was #4.

John my response on this is quantity AND quality. Perry had one AWESOME solo album and one shitty one.
Soto recorded much more, and I like his material better. He wins hands down IMO.

It's an undeniable fact. (And Bad English doesn't count as a solo project.)
