Here's a band that fell off the face of the earth?

Who out there liked these guys? I've been listening to the albums for the past few hours and am remembering exactly why I both liked them and eventually stopped listening....

regardless I'm wondering what everyone thinks about them.

Now that's a band I never thought to hear mentioned on this forum as I'd imagine that 95% of readers here will never have heard of them (although I'd love to be wrong!!). They're one of a handful of bands of whom I own every single album and for whom I would (and have, several times) travel more than 100 miles to see. Gary Hughes must be one of the most innovative lyricists alive - only downside is the songs are a devil to sing along to as it's so difficult to remember the words!

It's not entirely true to say that Ten have disappeared off the face of the earth as I saw them play live back in November for the second year running at the annual Fleetwoodstock charity gig, and it's only a year since the release of their last album. But you're right in one way, they have very much dropped the ball in terms of promoting themselves and keeping the interest of their fans and have allowed themselves to fade into the background. I think the bottom line is that Gary is pretty money-oriented and is too busy making a living from his studio and singing in cabaret to devote much time to the band.

I was told by an industry insider last year that Ten were supposed to be touring this spring but there's still no word on it so I guess it has come to nothing. Personally, I think Gary's seeming lack of enthusiasm for the band has rubbed off onto the fans and if they did tour now they'd be hard pushed to draw in the punters. Sometimes you can leave it too late.

10 years ago I thought that Ten were the great white hope for the melodic rock genre who might make the breakthrough from practically underground to mainstream. Another dream that came to nought, sadly

But delighted to see them mentioned here :)

The last few posts were written as I was busy composing mine, so all I can say is, I rest my case!

They're smelly Euros, Dean, so you wouldn't be interested.

LOL!
They were standard news on MR.com back in the late 90s...Andrew covered them often....once Vinny Burns left, it seems like the band went downhill...

I always felt that the first nail in the coffin was Vinny Burns' departure...his parting words on ten were interesting, because he had mentioned how the music was really starting to sound like other bands. At least once an album, they, er, Gary, from a songwriting standpoint, seem to rip someone else off so badly...that i'm surprised they were never sued.

The one example that sticks to mind, is the song 'Eclipse' off of Spellbound...the vocal melody of the verse (along with the rhythm tracks) are a complete rip off of an Yngwie song (I believe, ironically, off of Yngwie's album eclipse)..

I remember, back in the late 90s, I had a friend over (who'd never heard of ten) doing some work on my place....and when I popped in the CD, he goes "Who are these guys?? they sound like Whitesnake" The next day, he comes over to finish the job...and he goes "Now, what's this band you've got me listening to?" I replied "The same band I played you yesterday, you know, the one that you said sounded like Whitesnake?"...He goes "Oh yeah, well today, they sound like Bad English" lol...

But in all seriousness, there was some good stuff that came off of the ten albums....today, I found myself playing Spellbound, The Robe and bits of pieces off of Far Beyond The World....I thought Vinny Burns was one of the few guys out there that took the melodic sense of Neal Schon, without ripping off Neal Schon (or even sounding much like him)...which is very easy to do..I do it all the time! ;)

The last album I got of Gary Hughes/Ten...was Far Beyond The World...I believe just after that, he did those silly King Aurthur CDs....and after hearing the rather forgetable samples that Andrew posted...I had figured that both Ten and Gary Hughes were done for...

Alas, I never gave that new kid Christopher Francis a chance....I thought Vinny's leaving was it for the band...

Could never, ever see any merit in Gary Hughes or 10. Introspective drivel. Must have had a family member with a big job in the music business.

Now, bringing up Ten on a Journey forum is pushing it. Brad Delp, yes, Glenn Hughes, absolutely, but 10? Second, no, third rate bollocks.

But thats just my humble opinion.

Whatever happened to Honeymoon Suite? The Big Prize now there's a record...

Great band, but yeah, Vinny Burns leaving was a step in the wrong direction. I didn't care at all for the last album, and rerecording their best of with the new band members was ludicrous IMO.

Hughes strikes me, while extremely talented, as a Tom Scholz-style egomaniac in some respects. Their Babylon album is one of the best albums I've ever heard by anyone. The two that followed though...wow. Nowhere near.

And incidentally, to tie it to Journey, I discovered Ten the same day I discovered Jeff Scott Soto. Indy record store here in town used to be the best place to go for indy and import stuff. I'd ask the old man "whattaya got" and leave with 2 or 3 gems.

That day I bought Takara "Taste of Heaven" and Ten "Name of the Rose"

Hughes in production puts him so far under the vocals in the mix that you can barely hear him anyway.

I've only found about three songs by Ten that I care much for: "Ten Fathoms Deep", "The Name of the Rose", and "The Robe". I also thought they sounded a lot like Whitesnake, at least on "The Name of the Rose". The rhythm guitar playing sounds a lot like John Sykes. The rest of their music isn't bad but it's nothing that really grabs my attention.

As a side note, the band's name is "Ten" not "10". I don't think I've ever seen them use the number as their band name.

It really sounds like Gary Hughes has a good bit of LSD. Apparently, the band started out sharing writing credits...and within 3 albums, all production, songwriting, planning, etc was done by hughes...

Yeah, he's a bit of a wanker really.

And no, Tom Scholz is not an egomaniac, just talented, sadly, Gary Hughes is somewhat unhindered by talent.

Scholz is an egomaniac and a perfectionist. Hughes IS talented, but his ego gets in the way of putting out the best product with the best participants.

No mate, its self indulgent crap. Fuck all worldwide sales for Hughes. Massive sales spanning 4 decades for Scholz. QED.

Absolutely agree.
Ten were complete and utter shite. Thank heaven they are no more. I couldn't believe it when i once read that Mr Hughes was being compared to Mr David Coverdale. Fuck right off. He was a terrible attempt at a singer. No soul no passion.
No, (imo) Ten were garbage, complete and absolute crap. So glad they are gone.
Seen them just the once at a festival and went and got pissed while they were onstage and then returned for the other bands.

Stay well clear of them.

I had a soft spot for Ten as they originate just round the corner in Oldham, and first saw them supporting Enuff Z Nuff.

I loved the first Ten album and still think the final track 'Loneliest place in the world' is stunning. Have to agree that after Vinny left they became a little formulaic and later albums were a bit hit and miss (quite liked Babylon though)

I believe that their still going in some shape or form as they played a gig in Fleetwood just befor xmas.

I had a long chat with Vinny at last years JSS gig at the Witchwood in Ashton, and apart from doing the odd session (eg the first Ladder album) he's not really doing much in rock at the moment, saying that since he became a dad the urge to tour is less and that he now makes more money in dance music, mixing at clubs over the weekend.

A proper nice guy, but such a waste that he's not playin in a major band.
