Okay, I'm going to try and do a thread re: Journey/music. So, who all has seen Journey do a concert in the 70's? There must be some of you since it sounds like every one was PACKED! What was it like? Were you stoned/bombed? Do you remember what you wore? How long was it? How much was it?

I wasn't a concert-goer in the 70s so it would be interesting to hear what it was like; kind of like a time-capsule...

Not lame at all. Sadly, I never saw Journey with Perry, but was in the front row twice on the FTLOSM tour. He was awesome. He ran around like a maniac. I hate Wheel In The Sky, the album version, but he he really changed it around and rocked it out live. Oh Sherrie was much better live too, as was Only The Young.

Being born in 1976, I wasn't much of a concert goer in the 70s either. I MISSED OUT!!
So I think it will be fun to hear what it was like then.

i never saw journey live in the 70s. i asked my uncle to take me in 1978, but my family said no. i begged in 1979. they said no again. in feb of 1980, i won a radio station call-in contest for passes to the departure record release party. i was so thrilled i got to hear the whole album, meet & take a picture with each band member! i wouldn't shut up about journey journey journey, so to prevent a full-out tantrum, i was finally allowed to see them play at the palace of fine arts in march of 1980. it was a life altering experience.

Very cool post and I don't think any of us will ever shut up about Journey. I've never seen them with SP either.

Seeing Steve Perry perform each and every time was a life altering experience!

I didn't get into Journey heavily until E5C4P3 came out. Only saw Perry on the ROR tour in 1986. Very disappointed because it wasn't the Journey from the Houston show that I had watched 1,000 times. I missed my chances to see THAT Journey. Still kicking myself.

Yeah, I never had an opportunity to see Steve Perry live at all. Not as a solo artist nor with Journey. I'm still holding out for a little glimmer of hope that my chance hasn't passed yet, but I'm not holding my breathe. Seeing some of those "youtube" videos of Journey on the Escape and Frontiers tour just flat out makes me that much more jealous over those who were lucky enough to have seen them on those tours. You never realize how lucky you are until years down the road when things change in the business.

Same here,Greggie...My heart breaks just thinking about those amazing times when Journey was in the Golden incarnation...Never to be seen again.

However,being the incurable optimist that I am...I sometimes hold my breath.

I only saw them on the Escape tour, May of 82.........amazing! LOL, I remember the review the next day in the paper saying they were too professional, too this, too that. And I remember ranting to people saying how can ya be too good? I don't think the guy wrote a good review on any rock concert back then.

Would love to have seen an ROR concert and FTLSM concert.

I had a chance in '79 to go to a concert 4 hours away with a friend. Since I was only 15 and the concert was on a school night, my parents put their foot down. Had I known that would be my only opportunity to see Journey w/Steve Perry, I would've climbed out the window and snuck away. By the time of the ROR tour, I was married and then by FTLOSM, I had kids, so my concert going days were behind me for the most part and I was busy being a mom.

So I must content myself with listening to everyone else's stories.

LOL, that is exactly why I missed those too.

What was it like? The best time of my life.. I was 16 and my first concert
was Journey, Infintiy tour. Back then you could see 5-6 bands at one
venue. They were called "Day on the Green" here in the Bay Area.

Were you stoned? Sometimes. Bombed? Never. I never wanted to miss a show.

Do you remember what you wore? Usually jeans and a tank top or tube
top for summer venues.

How much was it? $12.00-$15.00 can you believe that? And that was seeing
5-6 bands. Starting at 10:00 am and ending at about 10:00 pm.

Out of all of the concerts I have been to over the years. There is a hand
full of performers who care about what the audience receives. Journey
was one of them.

Didn't see them in the 70's, but was a semi-casual fan until Escape. All the "cooler" kids around the block would play Journey all the time, passed down from their older siblings. They had great taste in music.

When I finally saw them in the 80's, they were my favorite band for a while, and I wasn't dis-appointed when I finally had that chance to see them live. I was dis-apointed I wasn't able to see them earlier than I did though.

Even seeing Bad English live a few times wasn't enough to satisfy my thirst for the music. They did play a few Journey songs on tour, but it wasn't the same with John Waite singing them. Different and coolish, but not the same.

Then finally Perry decided not only to release another solo album, but to tour. TO TOUR! If I wasn't straight, I'd have thought I was gay, the way I went crazy. I got tickets as soon as they went on sale, and was treated top a great solo concert as well.

I actually saw the band with "the other guy" far more times than with Perry, (but not yet with Jeff), but NOTHING compared to seeing Perry live.

No, I'm not a loon, I just know good music and singers, when I hear 'em.

ahhh, days on the green. my very first one was in 1980. i went to see journey, of course. the other bands on the bill were cheap trick, black sabbath (with dio) & molly hatchet.

both the journey force (of which i was a member) & radio station KOME had banner contests. most people used magic markers or spray paint on white bed sheets. i decided to go all out & sew a few yards of black fabric together & paint the departure scarab in all its feathery rainbow glory AND paint each band member's face below it. it REALLY stood out from the rest of the banners. while i was smashed up front during journey's set, one of my competitors decided to sabatoge me by unhooking my banner & stuffing it under a seat. unfortunately, that's when KOME did their judging of the banners, so i didn't win the tour jacket they were giving away.

the journey force judging was held after the show was over. we all brought our banners down to the field & laid them out. i was instantly announced the winner of backstage passes! fuck you saboteur, whoever you are! it was a little awkward backstage because i was so shy & there was no organized meet & greet. things were very different back then. they just handed me the passes & left me on my own. i kinda hovered & observed, but didn't really talk to anyone. i was terrified of approaching steve perry because sherrie was right next to him, giving everyone stink-eye. one of these days, i'll dig up a photo of the banner & post it here.

I would love to see your banner!! I used to make them to for the 80's concerts too. How come no one does that now..or do they?

Please do Cyndy, that would be cool to see. Love the Departure album cover, a friend sent me a template for cross-stitching it, I think it would look cool when done and framed.

didn't get to see them in the 70's, but i did see them in 1983 at the checkerdome in st. louis. bryan adams opened for them. our car broke down right in front of the checkerdome. we were 3hrs from home and had to spend the night ( 7 of us) at a guys aunts house and take the bus home the next day. yea, i was 16!

I have seen every tour since 1978 with the notable exception of Vacation's Over.

I missed this thread...would love to see that winning banner, Cyndy - you are so lucky. I only saw Journey once with SP and that was in '79. Funny, how I was so desperate to see them (really to see/hear SP) and then I never tried to go again...big regrets. But, obviously, they made a huge impact on me internally.

Steve Perry had a fear of flying so we never got to see them in the UK in the late 70s early 80s. Fucking shame, though Boston toured at the time and saw Van Halen open for Sabbath in 1978. They blew everyone away. Wish Journey could have been here.

I saw them the first time in Tucson on the Escape Tour Loverboy opened. Great show...saw them again July '83 in Phoenix, Bryan Adams opened, he was booed off the stage...lol...saw them in ROR Dec '86....'key tar', gospel version of LTS....not so great...saw Perry in Mesa on the FTLOSM tour, pretty good show overall. I've seen them four times since '98. Really wish I had seen them with the incredible Mr. Rolie....

Iowa Jam 1980---with the Babys, Molley Hatchett and TOTO I think....
dont remember much except that they only played like an hour or so...
was 18 just grauduated high school... remember People and Places being
played, why I dont know...I think Precious Time...lights and LTS, Where were You, the smash hit AWYWI! and Majestic opened up.

Saw them on the Departure Tour, then Escape, Frontiers, and ROR in subsequent years. All great shows. Frontiers saw a majorly subdued Perry but still a good show as it was early in the tour and they played a bunch off the album. I think they played all but Troubled Child if memory serves. I dug the Departure show because People and Places was the coolest live. I was really impressed with that (someone else said that too). ROR was also a great show. Perry was really UP for that one. Jackson played killer bass too. Baird was the water boy. Ick. WHAT was Perry thinking there??? These were all Seattle shows. I believe the next night of the Frontiers show, Hagar was in town and I went to that show and Neil showed up playing in overalls for a few songs. He wailed. Very cool. He must've stayed in Seattle an extra night.

Saw them on the on the Escape shortly after the Houston stop with Perry I was 13 then

Didn't see them in the 70s. First show was 1980, then '81, '82, and '83.

Never saw SP solo either.

Never saw them in the 70s; I was 12 in 1979, and "too young", according to my parents....

...only to find out YEARS LATER, in the liner re-issue Tour Schedule, that they played a show at the "Pinecrest" in 1979...which was only TWENTY MINUTES AWAY!!
