An arguable Journey review

Thought about adding a Journey related thread, since the Forum is slow...

The following review was published in the May 2007 issue 105 of Classic Rock Magazine.
The Nottingham show.

The reviewer is obviously charmed by Deen's vocal skills (can't blame him) and not too pleased with Jeff's performance.
I really cannot remember any Nottingham boots right now,so I'm not sure what are JSS's "whoops" and "yeahs" that the guy is referring to. :?

Also, wasn't Nottingham the show with the bad sound?I may be wrong...

Anyway, what do you all think about what the reviewer wrote on Deen's picture?

The reviewer is ignorant! Never heard "whoops" and "yeahs" from Jeff and I just saw 3 shows in Fla. Jeff does have awesome pipes and the classics are wonderful to hear. His stage presence is fantastic and exciting to watch...Shania, u saw him in Nov. so I don't have to explain it to you. Beats SA just standing there holding a mic and he did NOT have soaring vocals. that guy has bad ears!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's what I was thinking,Carol..."whoops" and "yeahs"? :? Of course Jeff does some "yeahs!",as any other singer does in a live show, wtf?
Never heard him doing that in an irritating way,so I'm suspecting a biased reviewer.(I'm being gentle)

Not sure what would please some of these guys...Seems that for some "critics" a singer who leaves his lungs on the stage every night is not enough.

Unfortunately many people would like to see a Perry clone. And I personally think that is disrespectful to Perry and the band. There is no other Steve Perry - never will be.
Jeff has made this his own, which is what should happen. And some people will like it, and some people will not. Either way it is cool.

(As long as people don't get nasty .. such as this comment)

while jittering like a toddler..

Clearly this person doesn't have a toddler.

Well to each his own. Can't please everyone.

I don't remember hearing any "whoops" and "yeahs" at the Journey show I saw last year or on any of the boots from the shows last or this year.

I think the reviewer may have been referring to the Fraud when he referred to "whoop" and "yeah". Stunning Steve was known for that. This reviewer is an idiot, though. Jeff's voice is ten times better and more dynamic than Fraudgieri's was even in his "prime".

I read the review and I would put it spot on with my feelings after hearing the Indy show this year. Yep, you all can start blasting away but I'm on the same page as the dude writing the article. I'm not up to speed on that particular show but I have the same feelings about the current line up. I'm sure I'll be blasted shit for this but, don't all of you agree that Perry is the pinnacle of rock vocalists? That seems to be an issue that no one on this board will argue. If that is the case, then why would anyone settle for second best as folks have been saying here on this forum. I'm not looking for a Perry clone at all. All I'm looking for is when the Journey vocalist sings I think, "Holy fuck, that guy is the best I've ever heard (better than Perry)". I'm not getting that now and I don't think you all are either. So why are you willing to settle for something less? I'm sure there are a 100 people that sing better than Perry, where the fuck are they and why aren't you asking for them???

I'm not going to blast you, except to say that evidently your ears are hearing something other than mine. I think JSS does an admirable job with the catalog, and that same catalog is in the best of hands. And as far as there being 100 people that sing better than Perry. That's about 100 people exaggerated in my opinion. Oh well, differences of opinion are what makes the world go round, right bro?

Yep, I'm with you bro, differences of opinion do make the world go around. I have no issue with what you wrote and respect your opinion. I'd bet there are several folks that can sing better than Perry. I can think of two guitarist better than Schon that I know that you've never heard of so why not someone better than Perry? He's out there, I want to hear him damn it. So are you saying Soto is in Perry's class?

That's a tough one Aaron. Actually I think Perry's in a very elite class. You can listen to every Journey or SP CD and all the bootleg concerts you want, and that is one pitch perfect dude. The only time his pitch is off is later on when his voice couldn't get to the note he was reaching for. As far as singers go, SP is my favorite. No, Jeff is not in my opinion in the same class as Perry, but he does a damn fine job, and in a very good class of his own.

I was at the Indy show as well and enjoyed it, though it wasn't one of Soto's best performances. I thought it was decent but admitted at the time that I was very close to the stage where there's a lot of noise and it's hard to tell exactly how good the singer is sounding. I've also heard some boots from early on in that tour that weren't that outstanding. That being said, the boots I've heard from about the middle of the tour last year through the end and into this year have been very good. Jeff has admitted that he had to adjust and sing a lot more in head voice instead of his natural chest voice range. He is definitely hitting his stride from what I have heard lately.

I'm with you on this Aaron. I'm waiting for someone as good as or better than Perry for Journey, on the classic's anyway. I don't happen to think that they exist.
They may come up with a new sound with their new album and I think that many are taking a wait, see attitude.

I agree on the reviewers take on Deen tho as I felt the same way when I attended a concert as did the friends that I went with.

The small 'banner' in the top right hand corner of the review actually contradicts what is said in the body of text.

It doesn't sound like the 'old' Journey, but then again I don't think that this new line up has ever suggested it does. Deen does have a fantastic singing voice, belying his husky speaking tones and I loved his renditions - on the one night that I saw (Manchester) when Deen was too ill to sing and Jeff took over the difference wasn't too discernable and Jeff brought a slightly different feeling to the ballads.

I've been around Jeff and his music for 4+ years and part of his trademark persona is the amount of stage that he covers and the effort he puts into delivering a visual as well as vocal performance (evident in his acoustic solo stuff too!)

Critics - pah! who needs them.

Yep, I too am waiting for that "WOW! he's good, so good that he makes me forget Perry"(enought not to compare the new to the old) not the "Oh, he don't sound like Perry :? but he's ok in his own right". I guess we chall see what next year brings.

I'm still wondering what the hell a 'whoop' & 'yeah' sound like....I wish someone could play me 1 or 2 songs that contain these items to show me what the hell that means. And regarding being at Perry's level or him being at mine or George Bush being a complete 'tard, why not wait to hear what the new Journey sounds like instead of comparing how Hagar sounds nothing like Roth on You Really Got Me!

The only thing I can think of is I use a lot of Perry's vocal 'items' from Captured on the songs we did live on that appeared on that album, there were a lot of things that he did that 'added' to the songs where I just borrowed them...someone not familiar with those versions might think I was taking liberties with the songs as I didn't do them like the studio versions like Augeri mostly stuck to.

Maybe the hardcore fans realize I am so close to those versions, I prefer doing them that way instead of the album versions, who knows?
