I love the books and the movies, but I'm afraid they may have matured and darkened too fast for some of the kids that became fans at 5 or 6 years old through the marketing and merchandizing of the characters. For instance, I can't wait for this movie to come out, but I'm pretty sure it's too dark for my 9 yr old grandson who was Harry for Halloween when he was 5.

Oh agreed, it's no longer a kid's book or movie. He'll be 17 in the new book, 15 in the new movie. Both are dealing with far more adult issues. Shoot, look what happened in the last book... tell me that won't be hard to stage and for any kid under 12 to watch. Brian was 11 when it started, and he's now 20. It's evolved on schedule from what I can tell.
My son turned me onto the series, told me they weren't 'kids' books, but just really well written books. I inhaled the first one in one night, the second book in two nights. It got to the point two books ago that we had to buy two copies, one for him, one for me, because I wasn't about to sit around and wait for him to finish. I do NOT know how to put those books down. If I pick them up, that's all I read til I'm done. Her later books now take me a week. We were both reading the last book at the same time over the summer last year, and I was far ahead of where he was... and I reached "that point" in the book. On the beach in Santa Monica, I start screaming "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO". Brian almost hit me. No.... come to think of it.. he did throw sand at me. Each book has turned more serious, much darker. There was no way that the story line could do anything but.
I can guarantee this... we'll be at the Universal Cineplex at midnight when the next movie opens. Oh yeah.. please god, let them show it on the Imax screen!!!!
