Nothing against Journey's choice back then, but hearing this made me think that Kevin would have been much better for the band after Perry left.

Yes - it's completely mystifying isn't it? Chalfant was clearly the man for the job....

But Chalfant's decision to record this album is puzzling too. These cover versions are trying to sound as close as possible to the originals and everything is sung and played note for note as it was in the early 1980s. There's a couple of vocal inflections or whatever which differ - but Chalfant hasn't reinvented these old classics at all.

As an audition tape for a Journey tour without Perry this is superb. But as a stand alone CD it seems like a strange career move.

But if Chalfant did want to prove a point then he's definitely succeeded, though.

I was always led to believe Chalfant got the job, but as soon as he got it, Perry said he wanted back in the band so they went with him instead, so this has nothing to do with the Augeri recruitment, as it would have taken place just before the TBF album. I could be wrong but have seen this topic discussed a few times here.

They could have hired him again after TBF though. I doubt Chalfant would have said no.

I don't see why he did this anymore than I could understand why Journey wanted to rerecord them. Why would anyone want to buy a CD of someone else doing these songs when they can still get the originals? Makes no sense to me. Image

To get a sense of what might have been, perhaps?
Maybe there's a market for his CD? Dunno.

Listening to the second clip, I think he should apply for Jon Bon Jovi's job.

Wow, those clips sounded really punchy - great sound. Kevin Chalfant's vocal work is impressive as always.

Anyone know what the tracklisting is?

I agree!!
I think these sound KILLER!!!
I have always loved Kev's voice, and he would have been my pick to front Journey.

I read somewhere sometime ago, that he wasn't selected because of The Storm connection.
Didn't Kev actually do a private show with Journey somewhere with JC and Rollie on keys?
I seem to recall that as well.

I have a Storm bootleg and Kev sings JTSW w/Gregg and it is Awesome!!

Why not?

Haven't you ever gone to see a local cover band play other people's songs?

Maybe he just enjoys singing these and knew that others would like to hear him do them?

As a career move, I bet it gets more notice than Two Fires or Shooting Star.

Why did Friga re-record Faithfully?

Sure, I'll go see Jeremey every chance I get and I love listening to his live CDs, but Frontiers is a Journey tribute band. If I were to buy a CD to hear Journey music though, and had a choice between the original and another singer trying his best to sound like the original I'd sure take the original.

I didn't like Jon redoing Faithfully either.

And how would you feel if Perry went in and re-recorded the originals? Original artists sometimes re-record the originals.

I don't see anyone complaining when Jeff records stuff like Ozzy's Shot in the Dark or some Queen covers or whatever.

Face it, it is ok for people to go in and do their take on old Journey songs, just as it is ok for anyone who wants to record anyone else's stuff. Sometimes it is just cooL to here something different. Of course nothing is ever better than the original, but the original tracks aren't going away just because someone else makes a new recording of a particular song.

Except Jonathan Cain did write the original so I wouldn't call his version a 'tribute'...unless it was a tribute to himself.

Also - Cain's new version sounded different to the original as well. He wasn't trying to create a replica.

The only way I'd like to hear either Perry or Journey redo the classics is if they either recorded them live or changed them up in some way. Like maybe doing some of them acoustic or something like that.

I don't have a problem with other people recording Journey's music if they're doing it as a tribute to the band or the music, or if they use some Journey material as part of a cover compilation album and sing them their own way in their own style. What I don't like is someone(who doesn't appear to be doing it as a tribute) trying to out Perry Perry on songs that were written specifically for his voice and vocal style. It seems like a waste of time on one hand, and an "in your face" on the other. It just doesn't sit right with me, but that's just me, to each his own. Image

I'd only be interested if it was just Perry and a guitarist and Rick Rubin behind the mixing desk. It worked for Johnny Cash and his albums of cover versions and old material are by far and away the best covers records anyone has ever recorded.

hard to tell with just 2 short clips, but i'm not really feeling this. sounds like he's being so careful with each word & each note, as if they matter more than the emotions behind them.

I will be purchasing that CD...

Let me say I am one of a few...who also, would really love to hear JSS take, on a studio version of some of the old JRNY classices from before escape. But I know it wont happen as JSS has posted as such...

If Journey was hell bent on going on after TBF, Chalfant should have been the only choice. He makes Augeri sound like a Gap carpenter, in comparison. Regardless, I'd rather hear new material from all these cover singers than trying to replicate what was already perfected.

Sounds to me like a bunch of loons are just offended that someone would DARE sing these songs and actually be good at it.

Fine, lets here Perry sing them NOW then. Thought so.

Fucking babies. If you don't like that Kevin is putting out the CD - don't buy it. How dare he!!!!

The original CD's are still there and remastered for you to listen to till the end of time. How this CD coming out could bother anyone is silly.

April 8, 2007 - Kevin Chalfant is finalizing work on a new 13-track cd entitled FLY 2 FREEDOM. The cd is expected to be released in May of 2007 on Clique Records. The tracks on the new CD are all of his favorite Journey songs, as a tribute to the music that Kevin honors to be some of the finest works done by any Melodic Rock band, ever.

Kevin states, "The musicians and songwriters of Journey are simply the best in the music industry." He adds, "The Journey love-laden sound has won the hearts of millions of fans world wide. I am proud to consider them personal friends and label them America's Finest Rock Band. Over the years, my fans have requested that I cover Journey's music. This cd was conceived to satisfy those fan requests."
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

See it is a TRIBUTE! No different than Frontiers or Evolution. This CD also will put a few pennies in the original songwriters pockets as well.

I dunno. I really don't get why anyone associated with the band (past or present) would want to re-record the old stuff, unless the material is taken in a completely different direction. From a creative standpoint, you start looking like a one-trick pony. How many times can you go to the well?

Spread your wings...do something new!
