Q for Jeff concerning AI

PostPosted: Thu May 03, 2007 1:10 am

I watch the show......and I've noticed that Randy Jackson has mentioned Steve Perry a few times and his base playing gig for that era. I was thinking last night: Steve could go on the show as Steve Perry.....but couldnt be connected to Journey......so what songs could the contestants sing since Steve Perry's solo stuff isnt popular witht he mainstream crowd. They would have to get the current Journey to do the duty instead.....and nobody knows Jeff enough to do that quite yet....so I believe its a bust unless Journey allows it.

My question for Jeff is out of curiosity really: IF Steve Perry decided to be a mentor on AI, could he technically use Journey songs, or I should say could the contestnats be allowed to sing the Journey songs without a bunch of lawyers involved. I would love to see him up there, althouth I know it will probably never actually happen.

Thoughts?

Why wouldn't Steve be allowed to be connected to Journey?

I think getting on AI would benefit the band and Perry. Only problem is he would have to perform on Wednesday.

Oh, well!

Because of the Jackson connection, the idea of Perry being on the
show has been a constant wish among fans on these boards.
But if he did, in fact, appear on the show he wouldn't nessecarily have to
be solely associated with Journey. There are all kinds of musical styles
that Perry would be a good mentor for; Love Songs, Power Ballads, Motown,
Old R&B/Soul... He could mentor the kids on styles like that and then, if he
chose to perform (not all mentors do perform), he could perform a cover from the
specific genre. And if it were to be a show on, let's say, Love Songs or Power Ballads,
I'm sure he could perform a Journey classic. If he could perform them on his solo tours,
why not now?

Steve Perry has rights to Journey songs just as Jon and Neal do. I can't imagine there being an issue with Steve acting as vocal coach for Journey songs other than his perceived obligation to sing, but who knows. Maybe Jeff will pop in.

Not gonna happen!
The crowd AND judges would be completely confused
and, before long, you would hear loud applauses
and chants of
"Justin! Justin!"

No one in the crowd would be confused. It's made up primarily of teenagers who don't know who Journey is. They'd probably recognize the songs but wouldn't have a clue as to whether the singer was Perry, Soto or Monker. I bet Jackson would nix the idea of Journey without Perry. They're still "dawgs" and Perry might view this as betrayal.

I know, but I couldn't resist

Besides, it's fun to bust Jeff's balls every now and again.
Gotta keep him 'grounded', being the lead singer of Journey and all.
Can't give him a chance of LSD setting in

I believe the idea has been discussed, Journey & Perry have every right to continue using the songs THEY created together, of course with proper consent. I personally think if Journey were on there to benefit the here & now, it would be best for next season anyway once we have a new album to promote, if Steve did it on his own, it would be a bit awkward representing Journey unless the band were completely inactive....it's a touchy subject all the way around but one I think is sorely overdue as that would be a good one for the show...& for the band :)

Feeling a bit feisty after a Duck's win? I know I am, or at least as much as I can with the twins ;). BTW- hope all is well with your wife and the expectant princess.

Okay, back on topic ;).

We've got only one on the way and my wife
is ready to burst!
I can't imagine what it must be like to have
2 swimmin' around in there

So, what was Dean like this morning?
Did he even sleep after that HUGE dissappointment last night?

Is she due in June? The boys are letting their presence be known. I'm feeling some soft kicks, not strong enough for Dean to feel yet, but that can't be too far off.

He was fine this morning, but he really hates the Ducks, LOL!! I of course feel bad for him  .

I hate that show. Stop watching that crap everyone. You can see people doing karoake in any bar on a weeknight much less on TV. When one of these "idols" goes on there and plays a freaking instrument then I might flip over for a milisecond. Shit Star Search was cancelled years ago. It's pretty much the same show just with a whore judge, a fat bass player and a rude Euro fuck.

Now a better idea for a "reality" show would be "Fucking with the Stars" where you follow around Paris Hilton and other Hollywood sluts and see who they are blowing or something like that.

I agree AR!

(Except Randy deserves a little more respect but nevermind about that).

YOU are wrong on this one... Bon Jovi songs were awesome, they all did great on the songs, except Jordan who had a little trouble last night... Blake, Melenda and Lakesha were fantastic!!!

The show is great too!!

I completely agree. Even the ones that go on to record deals after the shows have a hard time writing their own music. I haven't watched the show for a long time but see the highlights here and there on the news and such. Why don't they make songwriting a part of the contest? THAT is what sets apart a singer as a solo artist.

That show is killing music here in the UK. I imagine it's the same in the USA too.

Yeah, but luckily we have this place, where we are able to celebrate the music that radio has forgotten. (Where have I heard that before...?)

Wow, I had no idea you were GAY.

j/k

The show sucks though and I heard the Bon Jovi songs only because Howard Stern played them and they sucked ass too.

The lemmings who watch and actually pay to see these karoake singers on their idol tours show how fucked the music business has become.

It's a new era in entertainment, the business evolves & changes, sometimes good sometimes shit, depends on the individual. Us older folks don't always see eye to eye with youth grasps onto but think back when even Journey were a 'youth' oriented band, the house full of 16 year old girls who are now still following the band, posting here & not 16 anymore :) Sometimes what is your shit is someone else's gold, there's room for all the gold & shit, but bottom line is if this show pays respect to a band like Journey, that can only be beneficial to the band, past & present, as well as the preservation of the music/songs not to mention the longevity of it's influence....chew on that one Ed :)

Chris Daughtry was one good thing for rock coming from AI. The rest are so generic to me.

You fuckers are going to wind up going on there and force me to watch an episode, I can see it coming.

Hey, I can certainly see the merit it doing that, but I still hate the show.

Don't mind me, I am getting set in my ways in my old age.

Just no Journey/Sanjaya double bills on tour ok?

Yep. These 2 have turned into legit stars and both have shown
on their respective releases that they can also write their own music.
And think about it, without AI would we have ever been able
to hear these 2 incredible performers???
Probably not.

I believe I read somewhere that AI is actually having a 'Songwriter Search' next season. Has anyone else heard this? I can't remember where I saw it....suffering from CRS, must be the old age!!!

It's very unlikely that we would because neither of them exactly fit the mold of "what's hot" today. Kelly can actually sing instead of urban yodeling or just jiggling around while lip synching to a breathy, sex-kittenish little tune, and Chris is a rock singer instead of a rapper.

Have to agree with ya Barb, I have only seen a couple shows this season and not impressed with any of the singers. I think they let a couple good singers go by keeping that Sanjaya in there. What made last night worse was that there is NO rock vocalists left on the show, so I wasn't impressed with any of the performances, except for maybe the girl that sang "This Ain't A Love Song", who at least kept the soul in that song. IMO probably the worst batch of contestants to be singing Bon Jovi. That could have been a great show with some of the last year or two's contestants instead. LOL and for Randy to compare that Phil guy to Steve Perry singing a Jovi song, was a real stretch.

LOL, but who knows maybe my Journey/Bon Jovi bar is set a little too high for mere mortals.  Have to check out Jovi's performance tonight.

"Incredible performers?????????" C'mon man, they're GOOD at best. Clarkson is quickly eating her way into a size that's gonna put her on one of them pill diets, and Daughtry really doesn't have much much range though he does sing with a lot of emotion.
