talkin' 'bout the new sound

I've given Winds of Freedom a few listens now, and I think it holds clues about the Journey sound to come. Its a good thing. This song won't be my fave Journey tune, but I will say this about it, it is a decent song, and most important of all, it has the Journey vibe. FINALLY!

Journey has been missing that special vibe for some time now. Now it threatens to come back. That's been the problem all along really. Arrival had some great songs on there but something was just wrong. Sure, the Shirlyisms didn't help, and no matter what Kevin Shirly says, he does not understand the Journey sound, no matter how good a producer he may be. But the main problem with Arrival was the vibe. It was a good album, but that intangible mystical Journey quality was missing.

I think this song shows that new Journey has big potential. We don't just want rockers, or ballads, or midtempo tunes, we want all that, but we want them quality, and we want them to have that Journey mojo. Winds of Freedom has it.

Don't worry bro, you already were. I was only talking to the regular folks on the board.

PS. Infinity wasn't a very rockin album and I guess you probably like it ok. If they got the vibe right, the rockers will be better too, when they get down to it.

Don't be so pessimistic, you baiter.

It's an ok song, but hardly leads me to what I could believe would be "the new Journey sound". Its a song written for a specific event, which makes it nearly impossible to figure out what any other music COULD sound like in the future.

If not liking the song makes people fat queers in your opinion, then that's as bad as people saying Paris Hilton is a skank, but you'd still do her.

First, to ride Paris, I'd need viagara, and a borrowed pole. sorry.

Second, the song is only ok, I said that. The VIBE is what I'm talkin' about, the mojo, you know what I mean? Its something deeper than the song. With the right mojo, even suck songs become ok, without it, even good songs can suck. Maybe you don't get what I'm saying.

I was just thinking the same thing, who ! One song doesn't even give anyone a clue to what the new cd would sound like. I will just wait for the finished, final product. :D

You're out of your fucking mind...
While this new song was Ok for its intended purpose,
it was no where near as good as just about anything on Arrival.
You can hate Augeri all you want for the lack-of LIVE singing
but Arrival was a pretty fucking good album.

And don't get to thinking that this is a true sign of what
this new Journey is going to sound like. We aren't gonna
know that til we here a complete album, written entirely by
the Big 3 after a few months of some serious writing sessions together.

Big Fat Queer? I just might be...
You make me think of an old Dice Clay bit,
talkin' about jerkin' off and jizz rags...

"I gotta rag that took so many loads,
I hung it on the wall and called it art"
or in this case,
"I called it RapStillSucks"

It is a song written by Jon Friga for a specific event. it is a Cain tune. This is not indicative of what's going t come.

Fot Christs sake, do we have to hash this out again?

Carlitto you are a smart guy being stupid. Arrival was a great album, but it wasnt great by Journey standards. I still love it though. The new song is a B side, no doubt, but a JOURNEY B side. When a band has the right mojo it can make a song like yellow submarine and people will eat it up. As good as Arrival songs were, they lacked magic. There were a lot of ok sounding tunes on Infinity, and most consider it a great album, myself included.

PS. I liked Augeri a lot so quit bunching your panties. This new Journey sound is going to have the depth and quality we've been wanting, I feel it.

The weird thing is a lot of fans say they want the sound of Escape or Frontiers, then when the band does that (ie Message of Love) people bitch that it sounds like Separate Ways. WTF! I thought Separate Ways qualified as the "Classic Sound!" Hell, I love Message of Love. Separate Ways is so tired it makes me want to puke.

Whats a band to do?

Don't we all love Journey? It strikes me as funny sometimes that arguments ensue over albums and sounds. Do we pick it apart too much? I think that the new album will be great, no matter what.

You're right to an extent...but Journey will ALWAYS be picked apart no matter what. This time...it's gonna be MAINLY the Loons AND the Wigglers doing a LOT of the picking.

NO future Journey album will be considered 'Great' by the standards
of most Journey fans, myself not included, because too many
of those fans use Perry as the standard. They have not moved on.
As for being stupid...
I'm a big fat queer, remember

The first 45 seconds of Higher Place had more magic than the entire TBF album.
As for Mojo, you seem to think that this song showed a lack of it??? Is that correct?
Again, you really can't use this song to make any realistic judgement
on what the this new line-up will sound like on a complete, cohesive album.
None of us will really know that until, again, the Big 3 have some serious writing sessions
and put them to tape.

It wasn't just that MOL sounded too much like SW. It was that, after waiting 10-12 years for
something new from what a lot of fans consider the Best Journey Line-up, TBF turned out absolutely
awful. CTTL??? Cheesey, weak, unispired. Same goes for MOL, CB and 90% of the album.

We all want to hear something new with that classic Journey feel.
But, honestly, that doesn't mean we want to here the same shit cut up,
sliced up and played side-ways with a new name.

Well, I didn't want to touch this one
Oh Hell...

Not sure who came up with it but, essentially,
a 'Loon' is short for 'PerryLoon'.
These are the folks that will not be satisfied
with anything this band does w/o Mr Perry and always
find a way to bring him up in any conversation.
Some are very cool and tolerable while some...
A good sign of a Loon??? Perry Avatar = Loon
Just ask Donna!

Now a Wiggler, a term which I personally created (Thank You Very Much!)
is the same as a Loon except it is all about Mr Augeri and no one else.
This terml started with the housewives at another site always
getting dreamy over Mr Augeri's way-too-feminine stage moves
Same rule applies; some a very cool and tolerable while some...

Then you have what I like to call the "Sototarians", fans of Jeff's that
have taken to this new line-up and are VERY excited about the future.
Pretty much a Very Cool Crowd, BTW.

And finally, there are your Journey Fans. These folks aren't very picky.
All they want is to hear new Journey tunes every year or so and catch a
show or 5 every chance they get, regardless of who is singing...

Does that help?

Well in all honesty, whenever we hear new stuff from our favorite band, whether if it is songs like this that is written for a specific event or otherwise, then you can expect people to want to speculate as to where Journey goes in regards to sound. Keep in mind, this is the first original song by Journey with JSS as the lead vocalist. It is only nature for a lot of us to speculate and to over analyze, because that is what we do best here on this board. I personally like the song, not necessarily for the lyrics, but how the song was arranged. I also agree that it is probably not a song you will hear on the new album, but then again, I could be wrong.

At least it is giving Journey a chance to have some positive publicity and Jeff with some good exposure. While a few here, such as Deano seem to loathe the song, that isn't out of disrespect of Journey. It is because people like Dean have such strong passion for the band, that he knows this band will give 120% into this next album, and while several of us really like Winds of Freedom, anything that is on the new album will blow that song away. If that is the case, wow I cannot wait for a new album from my favorite band!

What new sound? It's a new song, but just re-arranged Perry-isms. Good, bad, or otherwise, it's the same tired old crap.
Let's hear something really new, and then we can decide.
I honestly don't see Journey going anywhere. By the time they get 'wherever', nobody will care.
