Only The Young - Depressing

I know several of you saw Journey in '86 and said they were phenomenal. Looking at this, though, and seeing how Steve "Talked" instead of sang really brings me down. He really did lose it not long after Frontiers.

The comments from other viewers are interesting. It would be great (no, I'm not holding my breath) to see the ROR documentary and a concert on DVD.

And as for Randy's clothes..... Oy!!!

Are you fucking drunk?

Sure he lost a bunch, but he is hardly talking. The dude on his worst days is still better than most on their best.

He sounds fine here.

Does anyone know if this was perhaps an encore or maybe he had a cold? would like to know the circumstances there, he still sounds fantastic.
This thread kind of makes me mad.

Only the Young was the show starter...in 86.

Guys, I am just comparing Perry in 86 to Perry prior to Frontiers.

That performance in 86 is rushed, no soul at all, merely going through the motions.

Compare that performance to ANYTHING from the Escape DVD and, by COMPARISON, it isn't that good.

Of course it's different - one was 1978 and one was 1986. I just discussed this with another forum member yesterday... Since I haven't personally heard Perry sing (live) in over 20 years, I don't know for sure, but I imagine he does sound different now. Few people (singers or not) sound the same in their late 50s as they did in the mid-20s to 30s. I'm not trying to start a conflict, just sharing my 2 cents.

Oh, well then maybe he was just warming up or maybe he was not feeling well.
Who cares?! why bring the man down?

I am not insinuating he SHOULDN'T sound different. That's the whole point of my thread. It bums me to see how he used to be, compared to how his voice sounded after he messed it up touring incessantly.

This is not a Perry bash. Time is just going by too fast, and this makes me feel even older. I feel really bad for the guy - the best voice ever (in my opinion) only to have it sound like sand paper later.

Love that performance Knox, stunning vocals! But mind you I like the more husky ROR vocals too.

And you have to remember the extreme back to back days touring Journey did in those 8 years in between. Would do in most vocalists let alone one that gave 150% every night. I'm just glad we got what we did. :)

I gotcha. I know what you mean about time going by too fast... UGH! (I have a high school reunion coming up to remind me, too.)

Thanks for sharing the video - I hadn't seen it and I enjoyed it. It took me back to my first Journey show... Talk about time going by too fast.

Who in the Hell is bringing him down except Knox? He sounds fine.

Deano, I am not bringing HIM down, just his performances in the later footage I have seen.

I am one of the biggest Perry fans around, just short of being a Loon.

Umm, no...its not what you said. You said "sounded like sand paper, going through the motions, it isn't that good, and he really did lose it."

SteveForever, I stand by that. He did lose it. Have you seen any of the Memphis clips? He sounds pretty bad. I am almost glad the tour got shut down before I got to see him in Chattanooga.

He was absolutely not well there. He had been taking some kind of steroid to get a "moon face" or facial edema like that. He had been going through hell with his mother at that point and could have had any kind of stress related digestive system disorder, or he could have been taking them just to build up his system enough to continue. Whatever was causing it, couldn't have been good.

Matter of opinion Knox, I think he sounded great on some of the FTLSM boots I've heard. Here's a taste test. I think he sounded awesome. :D

And so what if he was bringing him down? He has a right to voice his opinion. You Loons act as if it's not allowed to critique Perry.

Well, here's my take:

1. Non-stop touring from 1978.

2. In all likelihood, NOT the BEST "nutrition" on the road, if you catch my drift....

3. Personal problems, stress, being "pre-occupied", and dealing with a loved ones' illness.

4. And yet, "The show must go on...." ~ hokey as it sounds, it's true ~ But at what price?

....oh, and all this with Mr. Herbie "Let's Make (Touring) Hay while the Sun Shines" Herbert at the helm.

 ....because he knew DAMN WELL it couldn't go on forever.

As I said to a friend last night - even IF he doesn't sound good now (which I don't know since I haven't heard him), he probably still sounds better than the average shower-singing joe! :D

speaking of Herbie....he put out propaganda that Perry couldn't sing any longer just so this would happen.....

My throat hurts just THINKING about the schedule they kept "back in the day".

I know, blew me away. I knew they toured heavy back then, but until I actually flipped through the new cd booklets and saw how many tours they did, that they had played back to back days for months on end. I had no idea!

That was EXACTLY what got me flipped out. I'm a teacher and I talk a lot, but it is not nearly as strenuous as singing (most days!-LOL). Anyway, when I saw how many back-to-back nights they did with only one night rest, etc. OMG!
