OT - Joe Paterno

Postby knox » Fri May 25, 2007 3:42 am

I just became a Joe Paterno Fan. Some Football players at Penn State got into some trouble over a fight, I think, where several of them were arrested. Joe's reaction? This year, after every home game, they are going to clean the stadium on Sunday.

Nice to see someone actually punishing bad behavior. You can bet the other guys on the team who DIDN'T do anything wrong are going to be reeeeaaaaalllllll happy.

That's chicken shit. If Joe were really a standup guy, he would boot those vagrants off the team. I really doubt having them work on a Sunday is going to fly with the NCAA.

Even if it does fly, they will push a broom around for an hour and then take off.

Deano, though you are probably right and this is purely political, it is more than Fulmer does here in TN for the most part.

I suppose I am still a bit naive' and believe it is what it is.

Thanks for the reality check.

He's having the whole team clean the stadium out after every home game.

The work on Sunday question seems to be a valid one, though, but I guess it's already asked and answered if they went public with this plan.

Joe Pa is old school, and that's how it's done in my book. He's not going to put up with any bullcrap. I'm so tired of PC coaches and managers...sitting in the dugout and never saying anything controversial. That's why I'm pulling for the Cubbies in the NL this year - Pinella is the antithesis of the modern manager.

The base-throwing incident/tirade was just as great as Weaver's kicking dirt on the Ron Luciano's shoes and Billy Martin's legendary arguments with everyone wearing a mask...

From Luciano's book, "The Umpire Strikes Back":

"The problem with Earl [ Weaver ] is that he holds a grudge. Other managers, if they disagree with a call, may holler and shout, but you can still go out for a beer with them after the game. Not Earl. He never forgets. Heck, he even holds your minor league record against you. Once, a couple of years ago, I made a controversial call at the plate. Earl charged out of the dugout, screaming that that was the same call I'd blown at Elmira [New York] in '66. That sort of thing can get to you."

From the great Earl Weaver himself...

[Weaver holds the dubious distinction of being ejected from more games than anyone in American League history, with 99 ejections to his credit and is well known for the humor that often accompanied the ejections.] During one particular tirade with an umpire, he headed to the dugout screaming, "I'm going to check the rule-book on that," to which the umpire replied "here, use mine." Weaver shot back - "that's no good- I can't read Braille."

#1 Deano: Saban is a creep you're right on the noise w/ that.

#2 Yes Pinella and Larry Bowa are my 2 favorite managerial hotheads. Nobody can doggedly uproot a bag and kick dirt on home plate like Pinella, and nobody can walk up the tunnel, smoke half a pack, then go to the mound and berate a weak-minded weak kneed pitcher all in the course of 1 at-bat like Bowa.

God bless the both of their old school kindred spirits.

Moose, thanks a lot for that great memory :(
Unfortunately Bowa was a scapegoat for an underachieving bunch of wimpy players and the organization probly burnt its bridge with him.

I fantasize, though.
I mean, how many times did The Boss fire and rehire Billy Martin?

Give Bowa another chance.

I loved it when he let pitchers like Tim Worell and Mesa just take beatings when they were getting rocked just to prove a point.

"we're getting out ass kicked b/c of you? Guess what? F your era, stay out there. I'm not wasting my bullpen for a week on you.
