The dish on Satellite: Rockers Bettencourt and Farrell bring their diverse pasts to the Party
By Jed Gottlieb
Monday, May 28, 2007

It used to be you were either metal or grunge, never both.

Now members of Stone Temple Pilots and Guns N’ Roses are happily cohabiting in Velvet Revolver. Goth Marilyn Manson and the thrash gods in Slayer are touring together. And, in maybe the most unexpected teaming, Perry Farrell of Jane’s Addiction and ex-Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt have formed Satellite Party - whose debut CD, “Ultra Payloaded,” hits stores tomorrow.

“Why do people think it’s so weird I’m working with Perry?” said Bettencourt, who grew up in Hudson and formed Extreme in Boston two decades ago. “When I listen to Jane’s, when I hear songs like ‘Mountain Song’ or ‘Stop!’ or ‘Jane Says,’ I don’t know, they sound like rock ’n’ roll to me. Jane’s and Extreme were both just rock bands.”

Bettencourt and Farrell met at a party hosted by Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, who has been an Extreme fan since his days at Harvard in the mid-’80s (“That’s when he stole all my riffs,” joked Bettencourt). The reunited Jane’s Addiction had just fallen apart and Farrell was working on music for a new project. Moments after meeting Bettencourt at the keg, Farrell asked him to come over the next day and play on some tracks.

The sound Farrell was developing was far removed from Bettencourt’s Extreme days, but the guitarist dived into the project, turning Farrell’s ambient grooves into space rock with touches of metal, world music and alternative pop.

“I’m sure it’s not what he wanted it to be in the beginning, but that’s what was great,” added Bettencourt. “There was no plan. We just let it evolve and did whatever, and it forced me to do things that I wouldn’t do.”

A meeting of such different minds is a very L.A. thing, said Bettencourt, who now makes his home there. “People don’t discriminate out here,” he said. “No one thinks, ‘Oh, I can’t work with him because he’s pop or he’s alternative.’ People are really up for these eclectic combinations out here.”

Bettencourt should know - he’s pushing the eclectic envelope. Between making the Satellite Party record and touring it, he’s writing songs with Steve Perry of Journey.

“I’m now telling people I’ll only work with people named Perry,” said Bettencourt with a laugh. As two of the few guys in rock of Portuguese descent, they’ve been friends since Perry cold-called him rambling in Portuguese. “That’s the way it is out here. One day you’re working with Perry Farrell, the next you’re working with Steve Perry.”

Now this should be interesting.Perry and Bettencourt have worked together at the beginning of the 90s and people said they came up with some killer tunes.
I'd love to hear some material outta them. 8)

Could this be a Shaw/Blades type project, or is Perry just contributing to Bettencourt projects? Out front would be great but I'd guess this is yet another behind the scenes project for Perry. Cool all the same

I'd be all for a Shaw/Blades type project! An album and a tour together would be awesome.
Being the vague description of how exactly they work together,we can only guess the way this collaboration is developing.

Last time they wrote material together it was an equal writing effort, they both came up with ideas in the studio,it wasn't just Perry adding stuff to Nuno's songs.
Hopefully it's the same now. :)

Time will tell.

Just remebered that Steve and Nuno actually finished a song together in 1991 or so,it was called Always...I wonder what happened to it.

Maybe Nuno still has it somewhere in his vaults.Or maybe SP has it...
I would so love to hear that one.

Is that really a currant article, or anarchived old one?

Strange these 2 guys should pick this up again after so long....I believe they wrote several tracks together at the time, none of which ever surfaced.

It's late....I'm tired, typos are allowed...

As for an interview...I'll just get the usual "no" or "there'snothing to talk about" responses.

Perhaps I will try and clarify via a source connected with Nuno.

And for the record, whatever is going on, I still don't believe there is any potential new record on the way at this stage. Would be nice though...

Well,it wouldn't be impossible...It seems they had a good writing chemistry going on back in the 90s.

From what I remember,Steve himself gave some details on that song "(Always") he and Nuno wrote together,it was an acoustic piece with him and Nuno singing together as a duet.
Looks like the reason why that tune didn't make it on Nuno's album was because there were too many similar songs done already for the album...
At least that what SP said.

Might find that link where all this was said.Later.

I was actually fortunate enough to communicate a few times with Nuno via email and asked him about "Always".He said that he and Perry where really close friends, that Steve had the tapes and that it was up to SP if it would ever see the light of day.He also said that he was a really cool guy,and that he had a lot of fun working with him.

Exactly.

This smells like the same thing that happened earlier this year when someone wanted backup to a new Led Zep reuinion rumor they started and just recycled an old bogus reuinion rumor from 2002 as "proof."

'Drew raises the key point: WHY? would they pick up this rumored session of the "the early 90s?" More than likely just the same urband legend from then.
