Augeri's vocals, like always, were drowned out by the music. The band and management clearly realized that they had a 3rd string singer. God, he butchered the shit out of WYLAW. Terrible. Schon looks like Freddy Mercury with that haircut. He's just missing the overbite.

The guy or girl who recorded that boot was clearly filming from pretty far back so it's all muddy to my ears, but I don't think he's drowned out by the music. Notice how distant Neal's guitar sound is. I don't see the Freddie resemblance, but if he can sing half as well then I'm mad that he's been holding out on us.

Yeah, and they turned down Geoff Tate and John West and who knows how many others for him. I wish I could sing one tenth of one percent as well as him.

The guys you mentioned were turned down because they would have been too much of a deviation from Perry's sound, not because Augeri was better. They would have been better off with one of those guys and going off in a completely new direction. Augeri just perpetuated the Journey touring machine, nothing more. In 98 and 99 Augeri had a good, strong voice. After that, the catalog ate him up. He was shit from 2000 on.

Both of you nutholes are wrong on the Augeri decision.

Augeri was picked because he was a patsy. He could be overrun. He was and he is history.

Augeri was "picked" because the idiots in charge of the band considered him a Steve Perry "clone." They knew he could sing the catalog well enough to keep the $$$$$$ rolling in. Azoff considered him an interim singer until he could lure Perry back into the fold. Something he still hasn't been able to do. Augeri was a bluff....a pawn to make Perry come back. Didn't work out too well, huh? Jeremey H. is still the person I think that could put the band back on the radio.

I agree with you on that one also. Jeremey is Perry without the perm lol

No. No offense to Jeremy, but no way. If Soto can't do it, nobody can.

I would love to hear him sing a few songs with Journey. Imagine Jeremey getting a top notch vocal coach and strengthening and refining his voice even more. Scary to think he could get any better than he is now. Jeremey blows away Augeri.....hands down.

Without a doubt.

I've said that from the beginning, but was written off as a 'loon for it.

Augeri was hired because they wanted a singer who could sing the songs passably. They didn't want another frontman that could command the spotlight position in Journey. They got what they wanted and it didn't work out too well. :?

Dunno how they thought that would work with Jeff. Image He commands the stage as soon as he walks onto it. 8)

I know Jeff would step aside for Steve Perry, because he's such a fan and an honorable man. But Perry doesn't seem to want to put up with any more Journey bullshit.

Other than having Perry back, even if it's just for a one-off retirement performance, if they do Jeff wrong I'm done with them.

I never liked Augeri, but to me he was alright until he tried to sing Mother Father.

Talk about choking on the high notes.

Er...as usual not quite. What they wanted before they hired the next best thing in Augeri was to tour behind Trial By Fire. How'd THAT work out?

Er...as usual not quite on point. Perry was already out of the running, they chose what they thought was an almost, but not quite who would be malleable.

That would be cool, and he could do it. I ve seen a big improvement from a year ago, its hard to imagine getting much better. He was awesome at the Maylee wasnt he?

Who is this? Obviously, if you were at the Melee I met you. I'm terrible with screen names and everyone keeps fuckin' changing them which makes it HARDER on stupid fuckers like me!!! And Oh Sherrie, you are 100% correct!!!

Perry would be cool, but you know my opinion on that.

Going with what is feasible, and it's Jeff or bust.

The hell I am, her taunt was "the band got what it wanted." We're talking about 1998 Dean. Christ almightly, loose the 'gate goggles.

I would add that the fans got what they wanted for the most part with Augeri toobeginning in June 1998.

....that's what I thought.
p tried to leave them holding the bag (again) so Schon/Cain in turn pulled it down over his head and punched him in the face. That was left out of the original cheap shot of your post.
And don't act like it was an unmitigated disaster from 98- until june 06 either.

Before blewing out his voice (and who wouldn't,after years of singing one of the hardest catalogues in AOR?),Augeri was a decent singer.
However,he was better with Tall Stories.
Journey's touring schedule was too much for him, plus he had to change his natural singing style and that took a toll on him.

Let's face it...Augeri was hired just because his timbre was somewhat similar with Perry's.
I have no doubt that this was the thing the band wanted in the first place - to preserve the Perry sound as much as possible.
They have made new fans, focused on touring, recorded 2 1/2 albums and made some money.

However, business wise, the after-Perry Journey was a fiasco...No radio time for the new songs,no PR,no chart hits, poor sales, and then a nasty black cloud (TG) hanging over their heads.

They will have to work hard to rebuild their name and get it out in the spotlight - and that means a new killer album and a some wise PR/marketing making waves.
I for one,am waiting to see this happening. The sooner, the better.

Great post. I agree with almost everything you said. I really think Augeri went above and beyond in making an effort to vocally do justice to Journey for a very long time, and that took it's toll. People tend to forget this because of how things ended, but when he was on, he was very very good.
