Hi, I'm a new poster but have been here a long time. I just came across this article and Cain's comments:

"We just wanted to move in a different direction sonically. We're interested in our legacy right now. We want to sound like our records and we want to sound like the 65 million units that are out there."

The only way it would "sound like our records" is if Steve Perry came back into the fold. And we all know what the chances of that are.

So in other words Jeff wanted to go in the direction of new music and the different direction Jon was talking about meant different than Jeff's in that they just want to keep doing the nostalgia thing.

If they had just told Jeff that, he probably would have agreed that it wasn't a good fit, and left amicably. Why did they do it the way they did?

The band... if it can still be called that...has put it's self into a position of begging Perry to come back or retiring.

I would venture to say another replacement singer is not going to work at this point.

This all leaves a very bad taste....and the writing was on the wall with Steve A's treatment.

I don't see why they didn't tell Jeff from the beginning that they only wanted the Perry sound instead of leading him and us to think they were ready to do something new. They lied to all of us from the beginning.

This wouldn't have happened if they had done the right thing and hired Jeremey or Hugo in 1998. It was the right choice then. Augieri was always the wrong choice. JSS was a GREAT choice, if an ambitious one. A lot of people are hypocritical in that they demand "the classic Journey sound" but then want the band to "go in a new direction". All things being equal, a Jeff-fronted Journey would have sounded a LOT different, and a lot of fans would have dropped of the bandwagon, and they've been around too long to pick up as many "new" or younger fans.

I was eagerly anticipating a JSS-Journey album and I think it would have been pretty bombastic. If they had wanted to devote their sound to the "classic" Journey material, they should have gone with Jeremey or Hugo last year - both of them knew ALL the material and would have been able to take the gig at a moment's notice once Augieri went down for the count. That's what I don't understand - why bring Jeff on board last July, in keeping with the post-Perry "new Journey sound" modicum, only to do a 180 and suddenly want to sound like the "65 million units already out there"?

As I've said - they should have done this the second they decided to part ways with Perry - not now. They did a terrible thing to a fantastic guy with a world of talent. When they inexplicably chose Augieri over Jeremey and Hugo in 1998, they committed to a new direction, and that was the case (even more so) with Jeff at the helm. Certainly they will lose some die-hard fans; the new singer is stratospherically talented and sounds EXACTLY like Perry, and enough of the die-hard fans who have been outraged by the band's terrible treatment of Jeff will be won over by the talents of the new singer; additionally, he will put a LOT more fannies in the seats once they commence touring, because NO-ONE will be able to tell the difference sonically, and the new singer even bears a resemblance to Perry.

In my opinion, they should have done this in 1998 or 2006 (when Augieri was let go) - they never should have taken Jeff on board, because he's a great man and a tremendous talent who deserved the world and instead was treated like a pile of shit. The people they have alientated have enough dirt on these guys to tarnish their legacy forever. I hope that doesn't happen, because once everyone has some time to process these developments, they will be more than happy with the results.

Can't disagree with that. Jeff got me excited about the band once again. I thought he would pump new life into the guys and bring a different angle to the songwriting. Too bad they are going the nostalgia route instead.

I agree.
Journey is now a business and no longer a band. It seems they intend on cashing in on nostalgia.
So many others have gone that direction due to the current status of the record industry.

I guess it's their right to do so since it is their band.
How they handle the business matters is another ball of wax. It appears they have little concern or respect for others that are only trying to keep Journey in the spotlight and put money in Neal and Jon's bank account.

They sure seem to be good at burning bridges.

No it wasn't. I saw a story on Inside Edition the other night. He owns a pizza parlor and one of the casting people from Sopranos happen to see him and asked him if he would be interested.
