Question about SP Departure in 98

I'm a semi-lurker on here but I was hoping someone could enlighten me a bit.

In Steve Perry's Q&A in Dec 06 he was quoted as saying

"Since May 8, 1998 we have been officially and legally no longer together. I'm fairly convinced we've gone our separate ways. I also know that nothing will ever take away the magic times and the music we made...... while we were together!"
(from Question #44)

Does the "legally" part mean whatever partial ownership he held in the band along with other members had now been given/sold to Jon and Neal ?
(I realize he would still receive royalties from songwriting etc)

Basically meaning he had washed his hands of it all and wasn't looking back.
